The 2009–2012 LS uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Lexus LS key guide.

These LS460 years sit between the early HYQ14AAB fob (through 2008) and the HYQ14ACX fob catalogs list for 2013-2017 — the fob family and chip are confirmed by part number/VIN before quoting.
What kind of key does a 2009 Lexus LS use?
The 2009 LS uses a smart proximity key. There is no ignition key to turn. The car senses the fob nearby and you start it with the push-button. Inside the fob there is also a mechanical backup key, so you can still open the door if the fob stops responding.
For an owner, that setup changes how problems show up. A bladed key that wears out usually warns you slowly. A smart fob tends to fail all at once, and it does so in a few familiar ways:
- A dead fob battery, where the car reports that the key is not detected.
- Water damage, such as a fob that went through the wash or sat in a wet pocket.
- A crushed or cracked fob, often from being sat on or dropped on pavement.
Can you duplicate the key, or is this an all-keys-lost job?
Both are possible on this car. If you still have one working fob, that original key makes the job simpler, because we can work from a car that still recognizes a key. If you have nothing left, an all-keys-lost replacement is also possible for this setup. It takes more steps, but it does not mean the car has to be towed to a dealer by default.
Programming on this year is done through the OBD port under the dash. Our data shows no special NASTF secure-data registry requirement for this year. That is one reason we can usually handle it ourselves instead of sending you elsewhere.
If you are down to one fob, do not wait for it to fail. Adding a spare while a working key exists is the easier path, and it is the usually more economical route compared with an emergency replacement after the last fob is gone.
How we handle a 2009 LS key job
The process is the same whether you call from home or from a parking structure, with one difference: our mobile vans come to you, or you can visit our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood if the car can get there.
- You call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers any hour of the day, every day of the year.
- We ask for your VIN and how many working fobs you have left, if any.
- We identify the correct fob by part number and VIN, then confirm it before quoting.
- We cut or supply the mechanical backup key if needed and prepare the new fob.
- We program it through the OBD port and test that the car detects it and starts with push-button.
- We check the door and trunk functions and any other fobs you have, so you leave knowing what works.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a replacement?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real answer depends on your car. These are the things that move the cost:
A lost-fob replacement costs more than a bladed key, because the fob is an electronic part and not a cut piece of metal. Beyond that, the final figure depends on which of these applies:
- Whether you have one working fob or none. All keys lost involves more work than adding a spare.
- Which fob family your car needs, which we confirm by part number and VIN.
- Whether the fob is only dead-battery, or physically damaged or water-damaged and needs replacing.
- Whether you need a backup key cut as well as a new fob.
- Where the car is. A job at our Westwood storefront is different from a van call to a location across Los Angeles or Ventura County.
What we have not verified, and why you can trust the process
Here is the honest part. For this exact model year, we have not verified the chip family. Catalogs show an earlier fob family through 2008 and a different one listed for 2013 to 2017, and 2009 sits between them. So we do not guess. We confirm the fob by part number and VIN before we quote, and if what is in front of us differs from what a catalog says, we go with the VIN.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront and mobile vans. You deal with one company, not a dispatch middleman, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start. For other model years, see our Lexus LS key page, or browse all Lexus models. If you would rather write first, use the contact page.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 2009 Lexus LS have push-to-start?
Yes. It uses a smart proximity key and push-button start. The car detects the fob nearby, so there is no key to turn in an ignition.
My LS says the key is not detected. Do I need a new key?
Not always. A dead fob battery is a common cause of that message. Water damage or a crushed fob can also cause it. If the fob is physically fine, a battery is the first thing to check. If it is damaged, a replacement is needed.
Can you make a key if I lost all of them?
Yes, an all-keys-lost replacement is possible for this setup. Programming is done through the OBD port. We confirm the correct fob by VIN first. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will walk through what you have.
Is the original key required to make a copy?
Having an original key helps and makes the job simpler, but it is not the only route. If you have lost every fob, we can still replace one for this car.
Why can't you tell me the chip type for a 2009 LS?
Because it is not verified for this exact year. Catalogs list different fob families on either side of 2009, so we confirm by part number and VIN instead of assuming.
Does the fob have a physical key inside?
Yes. There is a mechanical backup key, so you can still get into the car if the fob is not working. It does not replace the fob for starting the car.
