The 2024–2026 GX uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Lexus GX key guide.

What kind of key does the 2024 Lexus GX use?
The 2024 GX is the all-new generation, the GX550 on Toyota's TNGA-F platform. It uses a smart-proximity key. The fob stays in your pocket or bag, the car senses it, and the doors and push-button start respond. There is no key to turn in an ignition. The fob also carries a mechanical backup key, which is there for the day the fob cannot talk to the car.
This key is server-authenticated. That is a different job from cutting a blade and cloning a chip, and it is the main reason this year is harder to service than older Lexus models. If you are comparing it with an earlier GX, the Lexus GX key page lists what changes by year.
The problems we see listed most often for this setup are:
- A dead fob battery, where the dash reports 'key not detected' even though the fob is in the car
- A lost fob, which costs more to replace than a bladed key
- A water-damaged or crushed fob that no longer responds
Duplicate or all keys lost: how does it differ on this GX?
If you still have a working fob, you are in the better position. Our data says an original key is needed for duplication, so having one in hand gives us something to work from and usually makes this the more economical route.
All keys lost is a different situation, and I will not pretend otherwise. Whether we can make a new key for the 2024 GX without the dealer is not settled. Aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage for this vehicle is still limited, and dealer service may be required. Tool support changes as updates come out, so we check it for your VIN instead of guessing over the phone.
If a dead battery is your only problem, you may not need a new key at all. Try the mechanical backup key to get into the vehicle, and call us before you assume the fob has failed.
What happens when you call
Our line at (213) 577-1366 is answered around the clock. Here is how we handle a 2024 GX:
- You give us the VIN, which is on the dash at the base of the windshield and on the driver's door jamb label, plus proof the vehicle is yours.
- We tell you what you have on hand: a working fob, a fob that is only unresponsive, or no fob at all.
- We check current tool coverage for that VIN. If your situation can be handled by us, we say so and explain the plan. If it needs the dealer, we say that too, so you do not pay for a trip that goes nowhere.
- If the fob is simply dead, we look at the battery and the fob's condition first, since that is the lighter-cost fix.
- If a new fob is needed and we can do it, we proceed in person with the vehicle present.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2024 GX key replacement?
I will not quote a number before I know your VIN and your situation, and any number given blind would be a guess. These are the things that move the cost:
The biggest factor is whether you have a working fob. Copying from one is usually more economical than starting from nothing. A lost fob costs more than a bladed key, and this is a smart key on a server-authenticated system, so the cost is higher still.
Next is whether we can do it or the dealer must. If tool coverage does not reach your vehicle, the work goes to the dealer and the pricing there is theirs. Then there is the condition of the old fob, since a water-damaged or crushed one rules out a simple battery swap. Finally, location and time of day matter, since we come to you with our mobile vans or you can visit our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. I give you the full figure before work starts.
What we have not verified, and why we confirm by VIN
For this year, our data does not confirm the transponder chip family, the exact programming method, or whether special diagnostic access is required. I would rather tell you that than invent specifics. That is why we confirm by VIN, and sometimes in person, before committing to a job.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront and our own mobile vans, so you deal with one company and not a dispatcher passing your call along. David oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it. For other makes, see our Lexus key services or all car key services.
Frequently asked questions
My 2024 GX says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause of that message. Use the mechanical backup key to get in, and have the fob checked before replacing anything. If the fob was wet or crushed, it may need replacing.
Can you make a 2024 Lexus GX key if I lost every fob?
We cannot promise it yet. Aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage for this vehicle is still limited and dealer service may be required. Call us with your VIN and we will tell you honestly which way it goes.
Is a spare fob easier to get than a replacement?
Generally yes. Duplication needs an original key, so having a working fob in hand gives us a starting point. Making one while you still have a key is usually the more economical route.
Does the 2024 GX have a mechanical key?
Yes. The smart fob has a mechanical backup key for getting into the vehicle when the fob cannot communicate with the car.
What do I need to have ready when I call?
Your VIN, proof of ownership, and a clear answer on whether you have any working fob. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour. You can also reach us through our contact page.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the vehicle?
Both are possible. We run mobile vans across Los Angeles and Ventura counties and have a storefront in Westwood. Whether we can finish the job on site depends on your VIN and tool coverage.
