The 2011–2016 Sportage uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Kia Sportage key guide.

Base trims: turn-key with NO immobilizer (the 2011-2022 Sportage is in the Hyundai/Kia theft class list) — a cut key starts the car with no programming. SX/smart-key trims use an ID46 proximity fob, OBD-programmed.
What kind of key does a 2011 Sportage use?
It depends on the trim, and that split decides almost everything about your replacement.
On the base trims, the 2011 Sportage is a mechanical turn-key car. You put a metal key in the ignition and turn it. There is no immobilizer on these trims, which means there is no transponder chip to read and nothing to pair with the car's computer. A correctly cut key is all it takes to start the engine. That makes replacement simple and usually the more economical route.
The SX and smart-key trims are different. They use a proximity fob with a Philips Hitag 2 chip, the ID46 family, and that fob has to be programmed to the car through the OBD port. The transponder data for this chip family has been verified against a published reference. These cars also carry a mechanical backup key, so a physical blade is part of the job either way.
- Base trims: turn-key, no immobilizer, cut key starts the car
- SX and smart-key trims: ID46 proximity fob, OBD programming
- Mechanical backup key exists on this model year
Why does the theft history matter on this car?
The 2011 to 2022 Sportage falls in the Hyundai and Kia group of models that lack an immobilizer on their turn-key versions. Those cars were prime targets in the 2021 to 2023 theft wave. If you bought a used Sportage, or if yours was recovered after a theft, the key itself may not be your real problem.
Thieves typically damage the steering column and ignition. A recovered car often needs a new ignition lock, and the key has to be matched to that new lock. We can look at the column, tell you what is actually broken, and replace the lock and key together instead of selling you a key that will not fit a ruined cylinder.
Wear causes trouble too. Ignition lock wafers wear down over the years, and the usual symptoms are a key that sticks or will not turn. If your key has gotten stiff, a new key cut from code is sometimes enough. Other times the ignition lock itself needs work. We check before we recommend anything.
Spare key or all keys lost: how does it work?
For this setup, you do not need an original key to make a new one. A duplicate can be cut from an existing key, and an all-keys-lost situation is also possible to solve.
On a base-trim turn-key car, losing every key is less dramatic than on most newer vehicles. Because there is no transponder programming involved, we cut a new key to the lock and it starts the car. Replacement is quick for exactly that reason.
On a smart-key trim, the process has more steps. We cut the mechanical blade, then program a new ID46 fob through the OBD port. This programming does not require NASTF SDRM access, so it is something we can handle ourselves. We come out with a mobile van, or you can bring the car to our Westwood storefront.
- Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the trim, or give us the VIN.
- We confirm whether your car is turn-key or smart-key.
- We cut the key from the lock or from your existing key.
- On smart-key trims, we program the ID46 fob through the OBD port.
- We test that the key turns the ignition, starts the car and works the door locks.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2011 Sportage key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because the real figure depends on your car. Here is what moves it:
- Trim: a plain cut key costs less work than a programmed proximity fob
- Whether you have a working key to copy or all keys are lost
- Ignition or steering-column damage, which may call for a new lock
- Location: whether we come to you or you bring the car to the storefront
- Time of day, since we answer around the clock
One thing we confirm before we start
Trim labels on a used Sportage are not always reliable. A car may have been sold with options that do not match what the seller told you, and keys get swapped over the years. Rather than guess, we confirm by VIN and by looking at the car in person which key system you have before we cut or program anything. Our reference data is verified for this model year, but the VIN is the final word on your specific car.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. When you call, you reach our own company, not a dispatch middleman who passes your job to a stranger. David, our owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it. For other vehicles, see our car key services, or contact us directly.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 2011 Kia Sportage have a transponder chip in the key?
Base trims are turn-key with no immobilizer, so the key has no chip to program. SX and smart-key trims use an ID46 (Philips Hitag 2) proximity fob. We confirm your trim by VIN before we start.
Can you make a key if I lost all of my 2011 Sportage keys?
Yes. An original key is not needed. On base trims we cut a new key and the car starts. On smart-key trims we also program a new fob through the OBD port.
Is my 2011 Sportage one of the Kias that was stolen so often?
The 2011 to 2022 Sportage is in the Hyundai and Kia theft class, and the turn-key versions lack an immobilizer. If yours was stolen and recovered, it usually needs a new ignition lock.
My Sportage key sticks in the ignition. Do I need a new key?
Possibly. Worn ignition lock wafers are a common cause. We check whether a freshly cut key fixes it or whether the ignition lock needs replacing.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?
Either works. We run mobile vans and also have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour and we will sort out the best option.
Do I need the dealer for a 2011 Sportage key?
For the data we have on this year, no. The programming is done through the OBD port and does not require NASTF SDRM access, so we can handle both the cut key and the fob.
