The 2000–2002 Sportage uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Kia Sportage key guide.
2000 Kia Sportage: key facts
- Key type
- Mechanical (no chip)
- Push-to-start
- No
- Transponder chip
- None
- Programming
- NONE
- All keys lost
- We can originate new keys on site
Most US first-generation Sportages use a plain mechanical key. transpondery.com lists Megamos ID13/ID48 chips for immobilizer-equipped versions in other markets — we test the car before cutting. The Sportage was not sold in the US for 2003-2004.
What kind of key does a 2000 Kia Sportage use?
Most first-generation Sportages sold in the US use a plain mechanical key: a metal blade cut to fit the ignition and door locks. There is no push-to-start on this year, and our data shows no programming method for it. For most owners that means the job is mostly a matter of cutting a key accurately.
It also means a mechanical backup key exists for this vehicle. If the remote fob has died, the metal key is still what starts the car and opens the door. The remote, where the car has one, is a separate piece, not part of the key itself.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: how we handle each
On this setup, a duplicate does not require an original key in hand. We can work from the lock itself, and all-keys-lost replacement is possible. Losing your only key is an inconvenience on this year, not a dead end.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and where the car is parked.
- We send a mobile van to you, or you bring the Sportage to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
- We check the ignition and door locks and test whether the car has any immobilizer system before we cut anything.
- We cut the key to fit your locks, then test it in the ignition, doors, and any other lock it needs to operate.
- If the ignition is worn, we tell you before going further so you can decide what to do.
What problems do owners of this Sportage actually run into?
Our data lists three common issues for this year, and they are what we expect to see on a car this age.
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars, where the key sticks or will not turn.
- Worn key blades that no longer turn the locks, even though the key looks fine.
- Aging separate remote fobs with cracked shells and worn buttons.
What affects the cost of a 2000 Sportage key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the job decides the cost. The main factors:
- Whether you have a working key to copy or all keys are lost. A copy is usually the more economical route.
- Whether the car has an immobilizer chip that must be handled, which we confirm by testing the car.
- Whether the ignition lock is worn enough that a new key alone will not fix the problem.
- Whether you want only the metal key or a separate remote fob as well.
- Where the car is. Coming to you involves more than bringing the car to our storefront.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What we confirm by VIN, and why call us
Our records for this year conflict. Most US Sportages use a mechanical key, but one source lists Megamos ID13 or ID48 chips on immobilizer-equipped versions in other markets. We have not verified a chip family for the US 2000 model, so we will not guess. We check the car, and the VIN where needed, before cutting. If a chip turns out to be present, we explain what that changes before you agree to anything.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront and mobile vans. You deal with one company, not a dispatch middleman, and David oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, so ask any locksmith for theirs.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 2000 Kia Sportage have a chip in the key?
Most US first-generation Sportages use a plain mechanical key. Immobilizer-equipped versions in other markets are listed with Megamos chips, so we test the car and confirm by VIN before cutting.
Can you make a key if I lost all of mine?
Yes. All-keys-lost replacement is possible for this setup, and you do not need an original key on hand.
Is the key hard to program?
Our data shows no programming method for this year. If testing shows an immobilizer chip, we will tell you what that involves first.
My key sticks in the ignition. Is it the key?
Often it is worn wafers in the ignition lock, common on high-mileage cars. A worn blade can also cause it. We check both.
Do you replace the remote fob too?
The remote is a separate piece on this vehicle. Cracked shells and worn buttons are common. Call us with the condition of yours and we will advise.
Can you come to me, or do I need to bring the car?
Either works. Our mobile vans come to you, or you can visit our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. Call (213) 577-1366. See also our car key services.
