The 2021–2024 Sorento uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Kia Sorento key guide.

Most trims: push-button start with a 4A Hitag-AES smart key. The 2021-2022 Sorento still appears in the Hyundai/Kia theft class list, which covers turn-key cars without immobilizers — base turn-key cars exist and need no transponder programming; we confirm per VIN. Smart-key OBD programming may require a Kia PIN depending on the tool. Catalogs also list a Texas AES ID75 variant for some MQ4 fobs, so we confirm the fob part number.
What key does a 2021 Kia Sorento use?
On most trims, the 2021 Sorento is a push-button-start car with a smart proximity key. The car senses the fob in your pocket or bag, lets you start it with the button, and the fob carries a 4A chip in the NXP Hitag-AES family. That chip is encrypted, so a hardware-store copy will not start the car. The fob has to be programmed to your vehicle.
Every one of these fobs also holds a mechanical backup blade. That matters in practice. If the fob battery dies, the dash may tell you the key is not detected, but the emergency blade still opens the door. Holding the fob against the start button, as described in your owner's manual, is the usual way to start the car with a weak battery. Before you pay for a new key, replace the battery, because a dead battery is the most common reason people think the fob has failed.
Other common problems we see on this setup are water-damaged fobs and crushed ones. A fob that went through the wash or got run over in a driveway often needs replacing instead of repairing.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?
For this Sorento, making a duplicate requires an original key that works. Having one working fob makes the job simpler, since we are adding to a car that already recognizes a key. That is usually the more economical route compared with starting from nothing, and it is the reason we tell people not to wait until the last fob is gone.
All keys lost is still possible on this model. We can work from the VIN, cut or prepare a replacement fob and program it through the OBD port. It takes more steps and more checking than a duplicate, and the car has to be with us or we have to come to it. If the Sorento will not move and you cannot get it to us, our mobile vans can come to the vehicle.
How we handle a 2021 Sorento key job
The sequence is the same whether you call from home, a parking structure or the roadside. David oversees the work, and the same company handles the call, the van and the storefront, with no dispatch middleman.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and give us the VIN, which is visible at the base of the windshield or on the driver's door jamb sticker.
- We confirm which key your specific car uses, push-button smart key or base turn-key, and verify the fob part number before ordering or preparing anything.
- We ask for proof that you own the vehicle, such as registration and your ID, before making a key.
- We program the new fob to the car through the OBD port, then test the door, the push-button start and the emergency blade.
- If you had a lost key, we can also remove the missing one from the car's memory when the tool allows it.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2021 Sorento key?
We do not quote a figure without knowing your car, but these are the things that move the cost:
- Which key it is. A smart fob costs more than the older bladed keys, and a base turn-key trim, if yours is one, is a different and simpler job.
- Duplicate versus all keys lost. Having a working original on hand usually makes it the lighter-cost option.
- The fob itself. Part numbers vary, so the right fob for your car affects the cost and has to match the car.
- Whether the programming tool asks for a Kia PIN, which can add a step.
- Location and hours. Coming to you with a van is a different job than you visiting the storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood.
What we confirm by VIN instead of assuming
Some things about the 2021 Sorento are not the same on every car, and we would rather say so than guess. The 2021 model year appears in the Hyundai/Kia theft class list, which covers turn-key cars built without immobilizers. So a base turn-key Sorento can exist, and it would not need transponder programming at all. We check the VIN to know which one you own.
Smart-key programming through OBD may require a Kia PIN depending on the tool. Parts catalogs also list a Texas AES ID75 variant for certain fobs, so the fob part number matters, and we confirm it before ordering. If anything on your car comes back differently from the verified data, we tell you plainly and go from there.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it. For more on the make, see our Kia key replacement page, the wider Sorento key page, or the full car keys section. If you would rather write to us, use the contact page.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 2021 Kia Sorento have a push-button start?
Most trims do, with a smart proximity key using a 4A Hitag-AES chip. Base turn-key versions exist, so we confirm by VIN which one you have.
Can you make a key if I lost all of them?
Yes, all keys lost is possible for this Sorento. We work from the VIN and program a new fob through the OBD port. It involves more steps than a duplicate.
My Sorento says the key is not detected. Do I need a new fob?
Often not. A dead fob battery is the usual cause. The emergency blade in the fob still opens the door, and replacing the battery solves it in many cases. If that does not help, call us.
Do I need the dealer for a 2021 Sorento key?
Based on our verified data, the programming is done through the OBD port, so a locksmith can handle it. Some tools may ask for a Kia PIN, and we confirm that along with the fob part number by VIN.
Does a turn-key 2021 Sorento need programming?
A base turn-key car built without an immobilizer would not need transponder programming. We verify that against your VIN rather than assuming it from the model year.
Will you come to my car?
Yes. We run mobile service vans as well as the Westwood storefront, and the phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
