The 2014–2018 Forte uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Kia Forte key guide.

Base trims: turn-key with NO immobilizer (theft class list) — a cut key starts the car. Immobilizer-equipped cars: transpondery.com lists Texas DST80 for bladed keys and ID46 (PCF7952) for smart keys; OBD-programmed.
What kind of key does a 2014 Kia Forte use?
The 2014 Forte is a turn-key car. There is no push-button start on this year: you put the key in the ignition and turn it. The key is a mechanical key, and the car also has a mechanical backup key, so the metal blade is always part of the picture.
What that means for you depends on the trim. Base trims were built with no immobilizer. On those cars there is no chip check at all, so a properly cut key starts the engine. Nothing needs to be programmed, which keeps the job simple.
Immobilizer-equipped trims are different. Our transponder reference lists a Texas DST80 chip for bladed keys and an ID46 chip (PCF7952) for smart-style keys. Those keys are programmed through the OBD port under the dash. For this setup, no special manufacturer security-registry access is required, so the work can be done at the car.
If you are not sure which version you own, that is a normal thing not to know. We look at the key and the car before we cut or program anything.
- Base trims: no immobilizer, a cut key starts the car
- Immobilizer trims: DST80 chip (bladed key) or ID46 chip (smart-style key)
- Programming method: OBD port, done on site
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?
Making a duplicate does not require your original key to be present in any special way, and having no key at all is also workable. For the 2014 Forte, an all-keys-lost situation is possible to solve for both setups.
On a no-immobilizer car, the job is mostly cutting. We make a key that turns the ignition and works the locks, and the car starts. On an immobilizer car, we cut the key and then program the chip to the car through the OBD port. Either way, we can do it where the car is parked, using our mobile vans, or you can come to our storefront.
The practical advice is to make a spare while you still have a working key. A duplicate is generally the lighter-effort job. Starting from zero keys is still very doable on this car, but it involves more steps.
What if the ignition is damaged or worn?
Two ignition problems come up often with this generation of Forte. The first is theft damage. These turn-key cars lack an immobilizer, and they were prime targets during the 2021 to 2023 Kia theft wave. Cars that were stolen and recovered often have a broken steering column cover and a damaged ignition, and they usually need a new ignition lock.
The second is simple wear. The wafers inside the ignition lock wear down, and the key starts to stick or refuses to turn. Forcing it makes things worse. A new key can help if your old copy is the worn part, but if the lock itself is worn, the lock is what needs attention.
We check both the key and the lock before recommending anything, so you are not paying to replace the wrong part. If the ignition lock is replaced, we can cut keys to match the new lock.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2014 Forte key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the right figure depends on your car. These are the things that move the cost up or down:
- Trim and immobilizer: a no-chip key is cut only, while a chip key also needs OBD programming
- Key style: a plain bladed key versus a smart-style key
- Duplicate versus all keys lost: more steps when no working key exists
- Ignition condition: a worn or damaged ignition lock may need repair or replacement first
- Location: whether we come to you or you come to the storefront
- Number of keys: cutting or programming several at once is more efficient than separate visits
What we confirm by VIN, and who you are calling
The chip data above is verified, but which setup your particular Forte has comes down to trim and how it was built. We confirm by VIN or in person instead of guessing, and we tell you honestly what your car needs before any work starts.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, and it is one company, with no dispatch middleman between you and the person doing the work. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 2014 Kia Forte have a transponder chip?
It depends on the trim. Base trims are turn-key with no immobilizer, so there is no chip and a cut key starts the car. Immobilizer-equipped trims use a DST80 chip in bladed keys or an ID46 chip in smart-style keys. We confirm by VIN or in person.
Can you make a 2014 Forte key if I lost all my keys?
Yes. All keys lost is possible for this car. On a no-immobilizer trim we cut a new key. On an immobilizer trim we cut it and program it through the OBD port.
Do I need my original key to get a duplicate?
No. Having the original is convenient, but it is not required for this car.
Is the 2014 Forte a push-to-start car?
No. It is a turn-key car. You insert the key and turn it in the ignition.
My Forte key sticks or will not turn. Do I need a new key?
Not always. Worn ignition lock wafers are a common cause, and in that case the lock needs work, not just a new key. We check both before recommending a repair.
My Forte was stolen and recovered. What should I expect?
These cars lack an immobilizer and were frequent targets in the 2021 to 2023 Kia theft wave. A recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock, and we can cut keys to match it.
Will you come to me, or do I have to bring the car in?
Either works. We have mobile service vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out which is better for your situation.
