Most US base Fortes use a turn-key ignition without an immobilizer — the theft class list covers the 2011-2021 Forte, and the 2010 is mechanically similar but pre-dates that list. When a chip is present — including smart-key trims — it is Philips ID46, OBD-programmed.
What kind of key does a 2010 Kia Forte use?
The 2010 Forte is a turn-key car. There is no push-button start, so the key goes into the ignition lock and turns, the way car keys did for decades. The key is a mechanical blade cut to fit the ignition and door locks, and there is a mechanical backup key for the car as well.
Most U.S. base Fortes of this era were built without an immobilizer, which means no transponder chip is needed for the car to start. When a chip is present, including on trims that came with a smart-key setup, it is a Philips Hitag 2 chip, known as ID46. That chip is programmed through the OBD port under the dash.
For you as the owner, this is mostly good news. A key for a car with no chip is a cutting job. A key for a car with a chip is a cutting job plus a programming step. Neither one normally requires a trip to a dealer, and neither one requires special manufacturer-level security access on our end.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes on this car?
On this setup you do not need an original key in hand to get a new one. If you still have a working key, copying it is the simpler path. If every key is gone, that is also possible to solve. We can cut a key to the lock and, if the car has a chip, program it to the car through the OBD port.
Here is how a typical replacement goes:
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the car's year, model and where it is parked. Have the VIN ready if you can; it is on the dash by the windshield and on your registration.
- We check the VIN and the ignition style to see whether the car has an immobilizer chip or not.
- We cut the key to fit your locks. If the car has no chip, that is the main job.
- If a chip is present, we program the ID46 chip to the car through the OBD port and confirm the car starts and the key turns the ignition and door cleanly.
- We check that the backup key and any spare you want made work the same way.
What if the ignition is damaged or the key sticks?
Two problems come up with this generation of Forte more than any others, and neither is really a lost-key problem.
The first is wear. Ignition lock wafers wear down over the years, and the key starts to stick or will not turn. Sometimes a fresh key cut to the correct code solves it. Sometimes the ignition lock itself is worn enough that it needs service or replacement.
The second is theft damage. Turn-key Kias without an immobilizer were prime targets in the 2021 to 2023 theft wave. The theft class list covers the 2011 to 2021 Forte; the 2010 is mechanically similar but predates that list, so we do not treat it as the same thing on paper. Still, if your Forte was stolen and recovered, or someone tried, expect the steering column and ignition to be damaged. A recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock, and a key cut to match, rather than just a spare key.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2010 Forte key?
We will not quote a number without knowing your car, but we can tell you what moves the cost up or down on this model:
- Whether the car has a chip. No chip means a cut key only. A chip adds programming time through the OBD port.
- Whether you have a working key. Copying from one is usually the more economical route compared with starting from zero, though both are doable.
- Whether the ignition is healthy. A worn or damaged ignition lock means lock work on top of the key.
- How many keys you want. A spare made while we are already there is generally lighter on cost than a separate trip later.
- Where the car is. A service call to your location is different from you bringing the car to our Wilshire Blvd storefront.
What we confirm by VIN, and why call us
Here is the honest part. The data on this exact year is mixed. Most U.S. base Fortes have a turn-key ignition without an immobilizer, but the 2010 sits just outside the model years that were documented in the theft-class list, and chip presence on certain trims, including smart-key ones, is not something we will guess at. So we confirm by VIN and by looking at the car in person before we cut or program anything.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles and mobile service vans. You talk to one company, not a dispatch middleman, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. The phone is answered around the clock at (213) 577-1366. If you are not sure which of your keys or cars you need help with, see our car keys overview or the Kia key pages, or look at other Kia Forte model years. Frequently asked questions
Does a 2010 Kia Forte have a transponder chip?
Most U.S. base Fortes of this era have a turn-key ignition with no immobilizer, so no chip. When a chip is present, including on smart-key trims, it is Philips ID46. Because the data on this year is mixed, we confirm by VIN or in person.
Can you make a Forte key if I lost every key?
Yes. An original key is not required. We cut the key to the lock and, if the car has a chip, program it through the OBD port.
Is the 2010 Forte push-to-start?
No. It uses a mechanical turn-key ignition, and there is a mechanical backup key.
Do I need to go to the Kia dealer?
Not for this setup. The programming is done through the OBD port and does not require special manufacturer-level security registration on our end. If your VIN shows something unusual, we will say so plainly.
My Forte key sticks in the ignition. Is it the key or the lock?
Often it is worn ignition lock wafers. A new key can help, but if the lock itself is worn, the ignition needs work. We can look at both.
My Forte was stolen and recovered. What will it need?
Usually a new ignition lock after steering-column and ignition damage, plus a key cut to match. We check the damage first, then tell you what the car needs.
Will you come to me, or do I bring the car in?
Either. We have mobile service vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out which fits your situation.
