New NX4 generation but the final Tucson year on Hyundai's anti-theft list: SE/SEL turn-key cars built before November 1, 2021 have no immobilizer; vehicles produced after that date do — build date decides. Smart-key trims use ID47 fobs (TQ8-FOB-4F26/4F27) programmed via OBD.
What key does the 2022 Tucson use, and what does that mean for you?
The 2022 Tucson is the first year of the new NX4 generation, but it is also the last Tucson year on Hyundai's anti-theft list. That combination makes it an odd one, and the key you hold depends on the trim and, just as much, on when your car was built.
On the base turn-key trims (SE and SEL), the key is a mechanical blade that goes in the ignition and turns. Cars of this type built before November 1, 2021 have no factory immobilizer. That means a plain metal copy of the key can start the engine, with no chip involved. Cars produced after that date do have an immobilizer. Build date decides it, not the model year printed on the registration.
On the smart-key trims, the fob carries an ID47 (Hitag 3) transponder chip. The fob part numbers we see for these are TQ8-FOB-4F26 and TQ8-FOB-4F27. Every smart fob also contains a mechanical backup key, so there is a physical blade hidden inside if the fob battery dies.
- Base turn-key trims: mechanical key, and the immobilizer depends on build date
- Smart-key trims: ID47 (Hitag 3) chip, programmed through the OBD port
- All versions: a mechanical backup key exists, so the lock cylinder matters
Duplicate key or all keys lost: how do the two jobs differ?
For this setup, making a duplicate requires an original key. We copy or clone from what you have, which is the simpler path and usually the more economical route. If you still have even one working key, do not wait until it is gone.
If every key is lost, that is still possible to solve. We can cut a key to your vehicle and, where the car has an immobilizer, program a new one. It takes more steps because there is nothing to copy from, so we work from the VIN and the lock itself.
Because the data shows programming method as none for the plain key setup, a cut mechanical key on an older-build turn-key car may be all it needs. A smart-key car is different. Those fobs go through OBD programming, and we confirm which one you have before we promise anything about the job.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the trim and whether you have a working key.
- We ask for the VIN and, if you can read it, the build date on the driver's door jamb sticker.
- We tell you whether your car has an immobilizer and which key or fob it needs.
- A mobile van comes to your car, or you bring it to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
- We cut the key, program the chip if one is present, and test it in the ignition and the door lock before you leave.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a 2022 Tucson key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real answer depends on your car. Here is what moves the cost up or down:
- Turn-key or smart-key: a plain cut key is a lighter job than a Hitag 3 fob that needs programming.
- Immobilizer or not: build date decides whether a chip has to be set up at all.
- Duplicate or all keys lost: copying from an original is usually the more economical route.
- Lock condition: if the ignition or steering column was damaged, you may need a lock rebuild or replacement on top of the key.
- Where and when: a mobile visit to your location costs differently from bringing the car to the storefront, and night calls differ from daytime ones.
What we confirm by VIN, and a word about theft damage
Our data on the chip family for the smart-key trims is verified. What a web page cannot tell you is whether your particular car is a pre-November 2021 build without an immobilizer or a later one with it. We confirm that by VIN or in person, and we would rather do that than guess and cut you the wrong key.
Two other things are worth saying plainly. First, these cars were prime targets in the 2021-2023 wave of thefts. If someone tried to steal yours, the ignition cylinder or steering column may be damaged, and a new key will not fix that. We check the cylinder first, because a key that fits a ruined lock does nothing for you. Second, Hyundai offers a free anti-theft software update at hyundaiantitheft.com, and your car is eligible. We recommend it alongside any key work.
We have served Los Angeles and Ventura counties since 1987. The same company answers the phone, sends the van, and does the work, with David overseeing the technical side, so you are not passed to a dispatch middleman. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start.

Frequently asked questions
Does my 2022 Hyundai Tucson have a chip in the key?
It depends on the trim and build date. Smart-key trims use an ID47 (Hitag 3) chip. Base turn-key SE and SEL cars built before November 1, 2021 have no immobilizer, while later builds do. We confirm by VIN.
Can a plain metal copy start a 2022 Tucson?
On turn-key cars built before November 1, 2021, yes, because there is no immobilizer. That is exactly why these cars were targeted in thefts. Later builds need a chip that matches the car.
Can you make a key if I lost all of them?
Yes, all keys lost is possible for this setup. It takes more steps than a duplicate because there is no original to copy, so we work from the VIN and the lock.
Do you need my original key to make a copy?
Yes. For this setup, duplication requires an original key. If you have one working key, make the copy before it is lost.
Is there a backup key inside the smart fob?
Yes. The smart fob contains a mechanical backup key that opens the door lock if the fob battery is dead.
Should I do Hyundai's anti-theft software update?
We recommend it. The update is free through hyundaiantitheft.com, and the 2022 Tucson is eligible. It is worth doing alongside any key work.
My Tucson's ignition was damaged in a theft attempt. Is a new key enough?
Often it is not. Damaged ignition cylinders and steering columns usually need a lock rebuild or replacement, so we inspect the cylinder before cutting or programming a key.
Can you come to me, or do I have to bring the car in?
Both work. We run mobile vans across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and we have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 to arrange either.
