2010 Hyundai Tucson key replacement

A 2010 Hyundai Tucson uses a transponder key with an ID46 chip (PCF7936/PCF7952) and has no push-to-start. This is the first LM-generation year. We program new keys through the OBD port, even if every key is lost. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour, and we confirm your setup by VIN first.

First LM year. 2010 is not on Hyundai's anti-theft list while 2011-2015 of the same generation are, so immobilizer fitment got spottier mid-generation — we confirm on the vehicle. OEM HYN14RT14-family ID46 keys are catalog-listed for 2010-2012.

What kind of key does a 2010 Tucson use?

The 2010 Tucson uses a transponder key: a metal blade with a chip inside the plastic head. The chip family for this year is ID46, in PCF7936 or PCF7952 versions. It is not a push-to-start car, so you turn a physical key in the ignition. There is also a mechanical backup key, meaning the blade can open the door and turn the lock even if the chip is not recognized.

That last point causes most of the trouble we see on this model. A key that opens the doors is not necessarily a key that starts the engine. The car's immobilizer has to read the chip and accept it before the engine will run.

  • Key type: transponder, ID46 chip family
  • Ignition: turn-key, no push-to-start
  • Programming method: OBD, through the port under the dash
  • No special manufacturer-only equipment is needed for programming on this year

Why does a copy from the hardware store not start the car?

A plain cut key has no chip. On an immobilizer-equipped Tucson it will turn the door lock and may even turn in the ignition, but the engine will not start. A key that was cut without a chip is one of the most common problems on this year.

Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips are another. They may program fine and work for a while, then fail intermittently. The car starts one morning and not the next, which is frustrating to diagnose. We would rather use a chip we trust than hand you a key that gives you a surprise later.

Duplicate key or all keys lost: what is different?

On this setup, making a duplicate when you still have a working key is the simpler job. We cut the blade, prepare a chip, and program it to the car over OBD with the original key present. It is usually the more economical route, which is a good reason not to wait until you are down to one key.

If every key is lost, replacement is still possible on this year. We cut a new key to the lock, program the chip through the OBD port, and make sure the car accepts it. It takes more steps, and it usually means we come to the car, since it cannot be driven to us.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and whether you still have any key.
  2. We confirm the details on your Tucson, including the VIN, before we start.
  3. We cut the key blade to your locks, or work from the lock itself if no key exists.
  4. We program the ID46 chip to the car through the OBD port.
  5. You test the key in the doors and ignition before we finish.

What affects the price of a 2010 Tucson key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page because the job depends on a few real factors. The main one is whether you have a working key or none, since all-keys-lost involves more work than a duplicate. The second is the key itself: an OEM-style key from the HYN14RT14 family of ID46 keys, which is catalog-listed for 2010 to 2012, or a quality aftermarket key. Location and the hour of the call also matter, because a mobile visit costs more than a stop at our shop. Worn ignition wafers, if the key will not turn smoothly, add repair or replacement work on top of the key.

When you call, we will tell you what applies to your situation before any work starts.

One honest note: we confirm by VIN

Hyundai's anti-theft list does not include the 2010 model year, while 2011 to 2015 of the same generation are on it. That means immobilizer fitment became inconsistent partway through this generation, and a 2010 can differ from what you would expect from the years around it. We do not guess. We check the vehicle and its VIN, in person if we can, before we cut or program anything.

The ID46 chip family and OBD programming for this year are verified. Where something about your particular car does not match, we will say so plainly rather than sell you the wrong key.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans that serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You reach one company, not a dispatch service that passes the job to whoever is available. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it, us included.

Phones are answered 24 hours a day, every day. Start at the Hyundai key page or the Tucson overview, or use our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 2010 Hyundai Tucson have a transponder chip?

Yes. This year uses a transponder key with an ID46 chip (PCF7936/PCF7952). The car is not push-to-start. We still confirm your specific vehicle by VIN because immobilizer fitment varied in this generation.

Can you make a key if I lost all of them?

Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on this year. We cut a key to the lock and program it through the OBD port, usually at your vehicle. Call (213) 577-1366.

Why does my copied key open the door but not start the car?

Most likely it was cut without a chip, or the chip is a poor cloned one. The door lock only needs the blade, but the immobilizer needs a chip it accepts.

Do I need the dealer for a 2010 Tucson key?

Not for programming on this year. Our data shows OBD programming with no special manufacturer-only access required, so we can handle it ourselves. We confirm by VIN first.

Is a spare key cheaper than replacing every key?

Usually, yes. A duplicate made while you still have a working key involves fewer steps than an all-keys-lost job. That is the more economical route, so make the spare before you lose the last one.

My key turns stiffly in the ignition. Is that the chip?

Not necessarily. Worn ignition wafers are a known issue on high-mileage Tucsons and can make a key stick or fail to turn. We check the ignition as well as the key.

Do you come to me or do I bring the car in?

Either works if the car can be driven. If it cannot, our mobile vans come to you. We cover 140 cities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and the shop is in Westwood.

We cover all these cities
