The 2020–2023 Sonata uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Hyundai Sonata key guide.

DN8 generation: push-button start and smart key standard — no no-immobilizer trims. OEM fob listings (95440-L1010, TQ8-FOB-4F27, NCF29A1X) consistently show Hitag-3 ID47; one catalog lists 4A for these years, which our fob-level sources contradict. All-keys-lost is a professional OBD job; PIN-read support varies by tool.
What kind of key does a 2020 Sonata use?
The 2020 Sonata is from the DN8 generation, and every trim is push-button start with a smart proximity key. There is no trim of this year without an immobilizer, so a plain metal key cut at a hardware counter will not start the car. The fob has to be programmed to the car.
Inside the fob is an ID47 chip, which is the Hitag 3 family. The OEM fob part numbers we see listed for these cars, such as 95440-L1010, TQ8-FOB-4F27 and NCF29A1X, consistently point to that chip. Inside the fob there is also a mechanical emergency blade, so if the fob stops responding you can still open the driver's door.
For an owner, that comes down to two practical points. First, a dead or weak fob battery is the most common reason people think the key has failed. The dash reports that the key is not detected, even though the key itself is fine. Second, once a fob is truly lost, the replacement is a larger job than it would be for an older bladed key, because the new fob has to be programmed to the car's computer.
Duplicate a key or start over: what does your situation need?
With this setup, duplicating a key needs an original key in hand. If you still have one working fob, adding another is the more straightforward route. If you have none, an all-keys-lost replacement is still possible on a 2020 Sonata, but it is a professional programming job done through the OBD port, not something that can be done with a blank and a cutter.
Here is how we generally handle it:
- You call us and tell us the year, model and what you have: one fob, a dead fob, or nothing at all.
- We confirm the car by VIN and ownership by registration and ID before we make any key.
- If the problem is only a weak battery, we check that first, since the emergency blade and a fresh battery may be all you need.
- For a new or spare fob, we program it through the OBD port and test that the car starts and the buttons work.
- If you have lost every key, we go to the car with a mobile van or help you arrange to have it brought in, then program a new fob from scratch.
What affects the price of a 2020 Sonata key?
We don't quote numbers on a web page because the job is not the same for everyone, but these are the things that move the cost:
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a spare is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
- The fob itself. Smart fobs cost more than bladed keys, and the exact fob depends on the part number that fits your car.
- Condition of the old fob. Sometimes a new battery or a new shell is all that is needed, which is lighter in cost than replacing the fob.
- Where the car is. If it is at home, work or a parking garage, we can come to it. If it can be driven to the storefront, that changes the job.
- Time of day. We answer the phone around the clock, and after-hours work is a different situation than a daytime appointment.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What we confirm by VIN rather than assume
Most of what is on this page is well supported. Fob-level sources agree on the ID47 (Hitag 3) chip for these cars. One parts catalog lists a different chip code (4A) for these years, and that conflicts with the fob-level information, so we don't rely on it. We would rather check your VIN and the fob in hand than guess.
One more honest note: on an all-keys-lost job, whether the tool can read the car's security PIN directly varies by tool. We tell you plainly if a particular car needs a different approach before we start work.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans that serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You get one company, not a dispatch service passing your call along, and David, our owner and lead technician, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith you call for theirs.
If you want to see our other work on this model, look at our Hyundai Sonata key page, our wider Hyundai key services or the full car key list. When you are ready, you can contact us or call (213) 577-1366 any hour of the day.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Sonata say the key is not detected?
On this car, that message is most often a dead or weak fob battery. The emergency blade inside the fob still opens the door, and a fresh battery often clears the message. If it doesn't, the fob may be worn or damaged and we can test it.
Can you make a 2020 Sonata key if I lost all of them?
Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on this car, but it is a professional OBD programming job. We verify the car by VIN and your ownership first, then program a new fob.
Do I need an existing key to get a copy?
For duplication, yes, an original key is needed. If you have one working fob, adding a spare is usually simpler and more economical than starting from nothing.
Is there a version of the 2020 Sonata with a regular metal key?
No. Push-button start and the smart key are standard on this DN8 generation, and there are no trims without an immobilizer. Only the emergency blade inside the fob is a mechanical key.
What chip does the 2020 Sonata fob use?
The fob-level sources we rely on show an ID47 (Hitag 3) chip. One catalog lists a different code for these years, which conflicts with the fob data, so we confirm by VIN and the fob itself before ordering parts.
Will a cracked shell or worn buttons mean a whole new fob?
Not always. Worn buttons and cracked shells are common on these fobs, and depending on the damage, a new shell or battery may be enough. We look at the fob first and tell you what it actually needs.
