The 2011–2014 Sonata uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Hyundai Sonata key guide.

YF generation, on Hyundai's official anti-theft list (2011-2019 Sonata): base GLS turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer. SE/Limited push-button trims carry ID46 smart keys programmed via OBD. We confirm trim on the vehicle.
What kind of key does a 2011 Sonata use?
The 2011 Sonata is the YF generation, and the key depends on the trim. The base GLS turn-key cars use a mechanical key. There is no factory immobilizer on those trims, which means there is no chip inside the key that the car has to recognize. A properly cut metal key turns the ignition and starts the engine.
The SE and Limited trims are different. They are push-button cars with ID46 smart keys, and those keys are programmed to the car through the OBD port. If you own one of those, a plain cut key is not the whole job.
Our data lists the chip family as ID46 on the push-button, immobilizer-equipped trims, but that specific chip detail comes from a single outside reference and is not independently verified. So we do not treat it as settled. We confirm the trim and the key system on your actual car before we cut or program anything.
- Base GLS turn-key trims: mechanical key, no factory immobilizer.
- SE and Limited push-button trims: ID46 smart key, programmed via OBD.
- The mechanical backup key exists, so the car can still be opened and handled with a cut key.
Duplicate or all keys lost: what is different for this car?
Making a duplicate is the easier path. For this car we need an original key to copy from. If you still have one working key, a spare is a quick and economical job compared with starting from nothing.
All keys lost is still possible on a 2011 Sonata. It means we work from the vehicle itself rather than from a key in your hand. We verify ownership, confirm the trim, and then cut a key to the lock. On a push-button trim, we also program the new smart key to the car.
Our data shows no special dealer-registration or NASTF/SDRM access requirement for this year, and the programming method on the mechanical setup is none. We still confirm everything by VIN, because trim and equipment can differ from what the badge suggests.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the trim, or whatever you know about it, such as a start button or a turn-key ignition.
- We confirm the details by VIN and by looking at the car.
- We verify that you own the vehicle before making a key.
- We cut the key, and for push-button trims we program it through the OBD port.
- We test it in the door and ignition before we leave.
What affects the price of a 2011 Sonata key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real answer depends on your car. These are the things that move the cost:
- Trim: a plain mechanical key is a simpler job than an ID46 smart key that needs programming.
- Whether you have a working key to copy, or all keys are lost and we have to work from the car.
- Where the car is. Our mobile vans come to you, or you can come to the storefront in Westwood.
- The condition of the ignition and lock. If a worn or damaged cylinder will not accept a new key, that adds work.
- The number of keys you want made at once.

Call (213) 577-1366Theft damage, and why we mention Hyundai's anti-theft update
The 2011 to 2019 Sonata is on Hyundai's official anti-theft list. The base turn-key trims shipped without an immobilizer, and these years were primary targets of the 2021 to 2023 theft wave often called the Kia Boys trend. If your car was one of them, the damage is often in the ignition lock cylinder or the steering column, not the key.
That matters, because a new key will not fix a broken cylinder. In many of these cases the lock needs a rebuild or replacement first, and then we cut a key to match. If you bring us a car with a punched ignition, we look at the lock before we promise anything about the key.
This year is also eligible for Hyundai's free anti-theft software update at hyundaiantitheft.com. We recommend doing it alongside any key work. It is Hyundai's own fix for the missing immobilizer, and we would rather you know about it than not.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 2011 Hyundai Sonata have a chip in the key?
It depends on trim. Base GLS turn-key cars shipped with no factory immobilizer, so a plain metal copy starts the car. SE and Limited push-button trims carry ID46 smart keys. We confirm which one you have by VIN and in person.
Can I get a spare if I still have one key?
Yes. This year needs an original key to duplicate from, and having one makes the job simpler than an all-keys-lost situation.
What if I lost every key to my 2011 Sonata?
All keys lost is possible for this year. We verify ownership, confirm the trim, cut a key to the lock, and program the smart key on push-button trims through the OBD port.
My ignition was damaged in an attempted theft. Is a new key enough?
Usually not. Ignition cylinders and steering columns damaged in theft attempts often need a lock rebuild or replacement, and the key is cut after that.
Is the ID46 chip information certain?
Not entirely. The chip family for the push-button trims comes from one outside reference and is not independently verified, so we confirm it by VIN and on the car before programming.
Should I do the Hyundai anti-theft software update?
We recommend it. Your car is eligible, and the update is free at hyundaiantitheft.com. Do it alongside any key or ignition work.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?
Either. We have mobile vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out which fits your situation. You can also start from our car keys overview.
