2023 Hyundai Elantra key replacement

A 2023 Hyundai Elantra has an immobilizer chip in every key, so a hardware-store copy will not start it. We replace and program these keys by OBD, even when all keys are lost, and confirm the exact chip by VIN. Call Wilshire Lock & Key at (213) 577-1366, any hour.

The 2023–2025 Elantra uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Hyundai Elantra key guide.

Immobilizer standard from November 2021 production, so all 2023s carry a chip. Push-button trims use NXP Hitag-AES smart fobs (NYOMBEC5FOB2004), but fob listings disagree on the chip ID ('4A' vs '6A', one lists ID49); for the base SE's bladed key the catalogs also conflict (American Key Supply lists an 80-bit '4D70-style' super-chip key for 2020+ Elantra/Sonata blades) — we identify the chip on the vehicle. Aftermarket OBD programming is reported working (Autel on 2023 Elantra), confirmed per job.

What kind of key does a 2023 Elantra use?

Hyundai made the immobilizer standard on the Elantra from November 2021 production, so every 2023 car carries a transponder chip. Whatever the key looks like, there is a chip inside that the car has to recognize before the engine will run. Cutting the metal alone is not enough.

The catch is that the 2023 Elantra is not one key for every trim. The base SE uses a bladed key with a chip in the head. The push-button trims use a smart fob, which is a Hitag-AES design from NXP. Check your car: if you start it with a key you turn, you have the bladed type. If you press a button, you have the fob. Smart fobs also carry a mechanical backup key, and that backup is how you get into the car if the fob stops responding.

Spare key or all keys lost: what changes?

This is the question that decides how the job goes. If you still have one working key, we can duplicate from it. For this car, the original key is needed to make a duplicate, so a copy starts from something that already works.

If you have lost every key, the job is still usually possible. It takes more steps because we have to work from the car itself instead of an existing key, and we have to identify the right chip and key blank for your VIN and trim. Programming is done through the OBD port under the dash. Aftermarket programming tools have been reported working on the 2023 Elantra, but we confirm that on each car instead of assuming it.

  • One working key: duplicate, then program the new one to the car.
  • No working key: we originate a key for your VIN, then program it through OBD.
  • Either way, a spare made now is much easier than a replacement made after the last key is gone.

How we handle a 2023 Elantra key job

Our van comes to you, or you can bring the car to our Westwood storefront. The steps are the same either way.

  1. We confirm the car, VIN and trim, and check whether you have a bladed key or a push-button fob.
  2. We identify the chip on the vehicle itself before selecting a key, since parts catalogs disagree on this model.
  3. We cut the blade where one is needed, or prepare the smart fob.
  4. We program the new key to the car through the OBD port and remove any lost key from the car if you ask us to.
  5. We test the key: door lock, ignition or push-button start, and the mechanical backup where there is one.

What affects the price?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real cost depends on the car in front of us. These are the things that move it:

  • Bladed key or smart fob. The two are different parts with different programming.
  • Whether you have a working key to copy from, or all keys are lost.
  • Whether the blade must be cut, and whether the ignition is worn enough to cause trouble.
  • How many keys you want made at once.
  • Where the car is and the time of day. Mobile service to your location differs from a visit to our storefront.
  • Whether the car has to be towed or moved, which is rarely needed for a key job.

What we have not verified, and what common problems to expect

Here is the honest part. The catalogs we checked do not agree on the chip for this car. Listings for the smart fob split between a '4A' and a '6A' chip ID, and one lists ID49. For the base SE bladed key, one supplier lists an 80-bit '4D70-style' chip for 2020 and newer Elantra and Sonata blades. We treat none of that as settled, which is why we read the chip on your vehicle before ordering or programming anything.

Problems we see on this setup include worn ignition wafers on high-mileage cars, hardware-store copies that open the doors but will not start the engine, cheap cloned chips that work and then fail intermittently, and a dead fob battery that shows 'key not detected' on smart-key trims. Try a fresh fob battery before assuming the fob is broken.

Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with David overseeing the work. We are one company with a storefront and our own mobile vans, not a dispatch service passing your call along. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for theirs. For other model years or trims, see our Hyundai Elantra key page, the wider Hyundai key service page, or contact us directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can a hardware store copy my 2023 Elantra key?

A hardware store can cut the blade, but it will not put in a chip the car recognizes. The copy may open the doors and then fail to start the car, because the immobilizer is standard on 2023 models.

I lost all my keys. Is that still fixable?

Usually, yes. All-keys-lost situations are possible on this car. We identify the right key for your VIN, then program it through the OBD port. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will tell you what we need from you.

My fob says 'key not detected'. Does it need replacing?

On smart-key trims, a dead fob battery is a common cause, so start with a fresh battery. If the message stays, the fob or its programming may be at fault. Use the mechanical backup key to get into the car meanwhile.

Which chip does my Elantra key use?

We do not guess. Catalog listings conflict on the chip ID for both the smart fob and the bladed key, so we confirm it on the vehicle and by VIN before ordering or programming.

Do I need the dealer for a 2023 Elantra key?

Not based on the data we have. Aftermarket OBD programming has been reported working on the 2023 Elantra, though we confirm it per job. If your car turns out to need dealer-only steps, we will say so up front.

Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?

Both. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans that serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Phones are answered 24 hours a day. See our car key services overview for more.

We cover all these cities
