The 2025–2026 Pilot uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Honda Pilot key guide.

Carryover of the Hitag-AES 4A smart-key platform, but we have not verified this newest model year against a catalog — aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage for the latest production can lag tool releases, so we confirm chip and tool coverage by VIN before quoting.
What kind of key does the 2025 Honda Pilot use?
The 2025 Pilot comes with a smart proximity fob. You keep it in a pocket or bag, press the button on the door handle or the start button on the dash, and the car reads the fob by radio. There is no key to turn in the ignition. The fob also carries a hidden mechanical emergency blade, which is the part that still opens the driver's door if the fob stops working.
The chip family listed for this platform is 4A, which is NXP Hitag AES. That is a carryover of the smart-key system Honda has used on recent Pilots. We want to be straight about one thing: we have not verified this newest model year against a catalog. The chip detail comes from a reference source, not from our own confirmation on a 2025 vehicle. So treat it as the likely answer, not a settled one, until we check your VIN.
What this means for you as the owner:
- The key is a radio device, so a hardware-store copy of the blade will not start the car.
- Any new fob has to be programmed to the vehicle through the OBD port.
- The emergency blade is a real working key for the door, so keep track of where it is.
- Water, impact, and a worn battery are the usual reasons these fobs stop working.
Dead battery, or do you actually need a new fob?
Before you pay for a replacement, check the simple cause. A weak fob battery is one of the most common problems with this style of key. The dash shows a 'key not detected' message, yet the car and fob may be perfectly fine. Pull the emergency blade out of the fob, open the driver's door with it, and call us. If the battery is the issue, you may not need a new key at all.
A new fob is the answer when the fob has been through the wash, been soaked, been crushed under a tire or a heavy bag, or simply gone missing. Water-damaged and crushed fobs are on the list of things we see on this kind of key, and a dried-out fob that powers up once in a while is not one to rely on.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: how it works on this Pilot
The data for this setup says an original key is needed for duplication. If you still have a working fob, adding a spare is the more straightforward job. We use the existing key, cut and prepare the new fob, and program it through the OBD port. Having one fob in hand also makes it easier to confirm what the car expects.
All keys lost is a different situation. Whether an aftermarket all-keys-lost job is possible on a 2025 Pilot is something we cannot state outright. Coverage for the latest production years can lag behind tool releases, and we have not verified this year. We will not promise it over the phone. We check the VIN, see what our equipment supports for that car, and tell you plainly. If it turns out to be a dealer-only case, we will say so rather than let you wait on us for nothing.
- Call (213) 577-1366 and give us the VIN, found on the dash at the base of the windshield or on the driver's door jamb.
- Tell us how many fobs you still have, even if one is damaged.
- We confirm chip and programming coverage for your exact vehicle before quoting.
- If it is doable, a technician comes to you with the equipment, or you can come to our Westwood storefront.
- We program the fob, test push-to-start and the door functions, and check that the emergency blade works.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a 2025 Pilot key?
Smart fobs cost more than older bladed keys, and that is the main reason replacement feels expensive. Several things move the final figure:
- Whether you have a working original key or all keys are lost, since the second case takes more work.
- The fob itself: how many buttons it has and whether the hardware must be sourced new.
- Where the job happens, at our storefront or by a mobile van at your location.
- Whether tool coverage for this model year is available to us or the car needs the dealer.
- How many fobs you want programmed in one visit.
- The time of day, since we answer around the clock and night calls are staffed differently.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key
We have been in business since 1987 and work out of a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, with mobile vans covering 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. It is one company. Your call is not passed to a dispatcher who sends it to whoever is available. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for that number before they start. For more on the model, see our Honda Pilot key page and the wider Honda key overview. If you want to talk it through, use our contact page or just call, and see all makes on the car keys hub.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the emergency blade if my 2025 Pilot says key not detected?
Yes. The fob hides a mechanical blade that opens the driver's door. If the message appears, a weak fob battery is a common cause, so try that first before replacing the fob.
Does the 2025 Honda Pilot use a transponder chip?
The reference data lists a 4A chip, NXP Hitag AES, but we have not verified it on this model year. We confirm the chip by VIN before we order or program anything.
Do I need my original key to make a copy?
For this setup, yes, an original key is needed for duplication. With one working fob, adding a spare is the simpler job.
Can you make a key if I lost every fob?
We cannot say for certain until we check your VIN. Aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage on the newest production can lag behind tool releases, and some cases may be dealer-only. We will tell you which one yours is.
How is the new fob programmed?
Programming is done through the OBD port. Whether any extra security access applies to this model year is part of what we confirm when we check your VIN.
Is a replacement fob more expensive than an older key?
Yes, a smart fob costs more than an older bladed key. The final cost depends on your situation, the fob needed, and location. We quote once we have your VIN.
Do you come to me, or do I come to you?
Either works. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour.
