2018 Honda Odyssey key replacement

The 2018 Honda Odyssey uses a push-button smart fob with a hidden emergency blade and a G-family (ID47, Hitag 3) chip. We can duplicate it from an existing key or make a new one if every key is lost, programming through the OBD port. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour.

Fifth generation: push-button start standard on every trim (KR5V2X fob, driver-memory variants on upper trims).

What kind of key does a 2018 Honda Odyssey use?

The 2018 Odyssey is a fifth-generation van, and push-button start is standard on every trim. The key is a smart-proximity fob, listed as the KR5V2X. The van senses it from inside the cabin, so nothing goes into an ignition. Upper trims also have driver-memory variants of the fob, which matters when the right replacement is being chosen.

Inside the fob is a G-family transponder chip (ID47, Hitag 3). That chip is why a blank from a hardware store will not start the van. The van has to be taught to recognize the new fob electronically, and that is the part of the job people usually do not expect.

Every fob also hides a mechanical emergency blade. If you slide it out, it opens the driver's door even when the fob itself is dead. These are the problems we see most often with this key:

  • A dead fob battery. The van displays a 'key not detected' message, but the hidden blade still opens the door.
  • A lost fob. Replacing a smart fob costs more than replacing an older bladed key, because the fob itself is a more complex part and has to be programmed to the van.
  • A water-damaged or crushed fob. Laundry cycles, spilled drinks and a fob sat on in a back seat all do the same kind of harm.

Duplicate or all keys lost: what is different for this van?

Making a copy is the easier path. For the 2018 Odyssey, an original working key needs to be present for duplication. We program the additional fob to the van through the OBD port, so you keep the one you have and gain a spare.

If you have lost every key, that is still possible to fix. It takes more steps because there is no working fob for the van to learn from. Programming is done by OBD, and our data shows this setup does not require a NASTF SDRM credential for the work. You do not need to have the van towed to a dealer just to start the process.

If you only have one fob left, do not wait. Copying from a working fob is the lighter-cost route compared with an all-keys-lost situation, and it is the one we would steer you toward.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, the trim if you know it, and whether you have any working fob.
  2. We confirm the van's details by VIN and decide on the right fob variant.
  3. We meet you where the van is parked, or you can come to our Westwood storefront if it is drivable.
  4. We check that you are the owner, then program the new fob through the OBD port.
  5. We test push-button start, door and tailgate functions, and the emergency blade before we finish.

What affects the price of a replacement 2018 Odyssey key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real figure depends on your situation. Here is what moves it:

  • Whether you have a working fob. Duplicating from an existing key is usually the more economical route; all keys lost involves more work.
  • Which fob you need. The driver-memory variants on upper trims are not the same part as the basic fob, and the trim decides which one applies.
  • The condition of the old fob. Sometimes a dead battery is the whole problem and no new fob is needed at all.
  • Where the van is and when you call. A mobile visit to a parking structure late at night is a different job from a daytime visit to the storefront.
  • Whether the emergency blade also needs cutting or replacing.

What we confirm by VIN instead of assuming

The chip family and programming method above are verified for the 2018 Odyssey. The part we do not guess at is which exact fob your van takes. Trim and memory settings can change that, so we check by VIN and in person before ordering or programming anything.

Nothing in our verified data for this year points to a dealer-only requirement. If the VIN check turns up something that changes that, we will say so plainly and not pretend otherwise.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for this

We have been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The same company answers the phone and sends the technician, with no dispatch middleman in between. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you are thinking of hiring for that number before they start, including us.

For other model years and makes, see our car key replacement overview, the Honda key page or the Odyssey page. If you would rather write than call, use our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

My 2018 Odyssey says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is the most common cause. The hidden emergency blade will still open the door. If a fresh battery does not clear the message, the fob may be damaged and we can test it.

Can you make a key if I lost every fob?

Yes. All keys lost is possible for this van. Programming is done through the OBD port. It involves more work than copying a working fob, so it generally costs more.

Do I need to bring my original key for a spare?

Yes. For a duplicate on this year, an original working key needs to be present. If you have lost it, we treat the job as all keys lost.

Does the 2018 Odyssey have a regular blade key?

No. It uses a push-button smart fob. There is a mechanical emergency blade hidden inside the fob, but it only opens the door and does not start the van.

Is a dealer visit required for programming?

Nothing in our verified data for the 2018 Odyssey says so. The programming is done through the OBD port without a NASTF SDRM credential. We still confirm by VIN before starting.

Why does a fob replacement cost more than an old bladed key?

The fob holds a G-family (ID47, Hitag 3) chip and the proximity electronics. It also has to be programmed to your van. An older bladed key was simpler on both counts.

Will a water-damaged fob still work?

Sometimes it can, but moisture often leaves it unreliable. Bring it in and we will test it. If it is beyond saving, we can program a replacement.
