The 2011–2013 Odyssey uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Honda Odyssey key guide.

What kind of key does a 2011 Odyssey use?
The 2011 Odyssey is not a push-to-start van. It uses a traditional remote-head key: a metal blade that turns in the ignition, with the lock, unlock and other remote buttons built into the plastic head. Inside that head is a transponder chip from the ID46 family (PCF7936/7961, Hitag 2). The chip family is verified against a published transponder reference. The remote-head keys for this setup are the MLBHLIK-1T type.
What that means for you is simple. The van checks the chip in the key before it will run. A blade that only turns the ignition is not enough, and neither is a key that has never been programmed to the van. This is why a non-transponder hardware-store copy can open the door or even turn the lock but will not start the engine.
There is also a mechanical backup key for this vehicle. That is useful to know if the remote head is cracked or the buttons are dead, because the mechanical side and the electronic side of the key can fail independently.
The problems we see listed for this generation are ordinary wear issues:
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage vans, which make a key feel loose or stick when turning
- Cracked remote-head shells and worn-out buttons
- Remote battery failure, which kills the buttons but does not by itself mean the chip is bad
- Cheap non-transponder copies that fit the lock but never start the van
Do I need a duplicate or is this an all-keys-lost job?
Both are possible on this van. Making a duplicate is the easier situation: you still have a working original, and for this setup the original key needs to be present. We cut a new blade to match and program the new chip and remote to the van through the OBD port. No special manufacturer-access subscription is required for the programming method listed for this year.
All keys lost is still doable. We can create a key without an original, working from the lock and the vehicle itself, then program it by OBD. It takes more steps than a duplicate, which matters for cost, but it does not mean you have to have the van towed to a dealer by default.
If your key still turns the ignition but the van will not start, do not assume the chip is dead. Try the spare first. If the spare works, the problem is the first key, and replacing it is a straightforward job.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model and whether you have any working key.
- We confirm the key details by VIN before cutting anything.
- We come to you with a mobile van, or you can visit our Westwood storefront if the van is drivable.
- We cut the blade, using the lock itself if all keys are lost.
- We program the transponder and remote to the van through the OBD port.
- We test the key in the ignition, the door locks and the remote buttons before we finish.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2011 Odyssey key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real figure depends on your situation. These are the things that move it:
- Duplicate versus all keys lost. Having an original to work from is usually the more economical route.
- How many keys you need cut and programmed in the same visit
- Whether the remote head only needs a new shell or battery rather than a whole new key
- The condition of the ignition. Badly worn wafers can make cutting and testing take longer, and sometimes the lock itself needs attention
- Where the van is. A mobile visit and a drop-off at the storefront are different jobs
- The time of day, since we answer around the clock and nights are handled differently from a weekday morning
What do we still confirm by VIN?
The data we have for this year is verified for the chip family and programming method. Even so, we confirm by VIN, and by looking at the key you have, before we order or cut anything. Trims and build dates can differ, and remote part numbers sometimes vary within a model year. If something on your van does not match what we expect, we will tell you plainly before you pay for work.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for this van?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans that serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You reach one company, not a dispatch middleman who passes your job to whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you call for theirs, and ask before they start work, not after.
The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (213) 577-1366. You can also use our contact page or look through the full car key services list.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 2011 Honda Odyssey push-to-start?
No. It uses a remote-head key with a metal blade that goes into the ignition, and the transponder chip is inside the plastic head.
Will a hardware-store copy start my 2011 Odyssey?
No. A non-transponder copy may fit the lock and even turn it, but the van will not start because the chip is missing and has not been programmed.
What transponder chip does the 2011 Odyssey key use?
The chip family is ID46 (PCF7936/7961, Hitag 2). We still confirm by VIN and by checking your existing key before we cut or program anything.
Can you make a key if I lost all of them?
Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on this setup. We cut a blade from the lock and program the new key by OBD. It involves more steps than a duplicate.
Do you need my original key to make a copy?
For a duplicate, yes, the original needs to be present. If you have no original, that becomes an all-keys-lost job.
Do I have to go to a dealer for the programming?
Not for the method listed for this year. Programming is done through the OBD port, and no special manufacturer-access subscription is required.
My remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a new key?
Not always. A dead battery is a common cause, and a cracked shell or worn buttons can sometimes be fixed without replacing the whole key. We can check which it is.
My key feels loose in the ignition. Is that a key problem?
It can be the lock. Worn ignition wafers are a known issue on high-mileage 2011 Odysseys, and a new key will not always fix a worn lock.
