2005 Honda Odyssey key replacement

A 2005 Honda Odyssey uses an ID46 transponder remote-head key, so a non-transponder hardware-store copy will not start the van. We cut and program these through the OBD port, with or without an original key. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour and we'll confirm the exact key for your trim.

What kind of key does a 2005 Honda Odyssey use?

The 2005 Odyssey is a remote-head key van. The key blade and the remote buttons are built into one piece, and inside the plastic head is a transponder chip from the ID46 family (PCF7936/7941, Hitag 2). This is not a push-to-start vehicle. You put a key in the ignition and turn it.

The chip is the part owners tend to miss. The van's immobilizer looks for a chip it recognizes before it lets the engine run. A blade cut at a hardware store may slide into the ignition and even turn the lock, but without a programmed chip the car will not start. That is one of the most common problems we see on this generation of van, and it is why a cheap copy so often turns out to be wasted money.

  • Key type: remote-head, with the remote built into the key
  • Chip: ID46 (PCF7936/7941, Hitag 2), verified against two parts references
  • Push-to-start: no
  • Programming: through the OBD port, and the NASTF secure data registry is not required

Can you duplicate the key, or is it an all-keys-lost job?

Both are possible on this van. If you still have one working key, duplication is the simpler path. We cut a new blade, then program the new chip and remote to the van. The original key is needed for that route, so if you are down to one key, this is the time to make a spare rather than wait.

If every key is gone, we can still make you a new one. All-keys-lost is possible for this setup, and the programming still goes through the OBD port. It takes more steps than a duplicate because there is no working key to start from, but it does not mean a tow to the dealer.

The data also lists a mechanical backup key for this van, so the lock side is not a mystery. The blade can be cut, and the chip is the part that has to be matched to the car.

  1. Call us and tell us the trim and whether you have any working key.
  2. We confirm the correct key by VIN before cutting anything.
  3. We cut the blade to fit your ignition and doors.
  4. We program the ID46 chip and the remote through the OBD port.
  5. You test the ignition, the locks and each button before we finish.

What affects the price of an Odyssey key?

We don't quote numbers on a web page because the job changes with the situation. These are the things that actually move the cost:

  • Duplicate or all keys lost. Having a working key usually makes the job lighter and the more economical route.
  • How many keys you need. Programming two at once is more efficient than coming back for a second visit.
  • Which key your trim takes. Base-trim keys and the memory-linked keys on higher trims are not the same part.
  • Shell and button condition. If your remote head is cracked or the buttons are worn, a new head may make more sense than keeping the old one.
  • Ignition condition. A worn lock can add work, as covered below.
  • Where you are. A mobile visit to your location differs from you coming to our Westwood storefront.

What we confirm by VIN, and worn ignitions

Our data on this year notes that EX-L and up use Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory-linked keys, and those keys must match the memory slot. We do not guess about that on the phone. For any 2005 Odyssey, we confirm the correct key by VIN, or in person with the van, before we order or cut anything. That protects you from paying for a key that fits the blade but fights the seat memory.

The other recurring problem here is a worn ignition on high-mileage vans. The lock wafers wear down, and a new key can feel loose or stick even when it is cut correctly. If that is what is happening, we will tell you plainly and look at the lock rather than keep cutting keys against it. Cracked remote-head shells, worn buttons and dead remote batteries are also common. A dead battery is a small fix, so check it before assuming the remote itself has failed.

Frequently asked questions

Will a hardware-store copy start my 2005 Odyssey?

No. The van uses an ID46 transponder key, and non-transponder copies will not start it. The chip has to be programmed to the van.

Do I need my original key to get a spare made?

For duplication, yes, the original key is needed. If you have no working key, that is an all-keys-lost job, and it is possible for this van.

Can you make a key if I lost every key?

Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on the 2005 Odyssey. We program the new key through the OBD port and confirm the correct key by VIN first.

Does this van have push-to-start?

No. The 2005 Odyssey uses a remote-head key that you insert and turn in the ignition.

What are Driver 1 and Driver 2 keys?

On EX-L and higher trims, the keys are linked to seat memory, and each key must match its memory slot. We confirm which keys your van needs by VIN or in person.

My new key feels loose or sticks in the ignition. Is the key bad?

Not necessarily. Worn ignition lock wafers are common on high-mileage Odysseys. We check the lock as well as the key.

My remote stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Not always. Replace the remote battery first. If the buttons are worn or the head is cracked, we can replace the remote-head key.

Do I have to go to the dealer?

Not for this year. The programming is done through the OBD port and does not require NASTF secure data registry access, so we can handle it ourselves.

We cover all these cities
