2016 Honda HR-V key replacement

The 2016 Honda HR-V uses a remote-head key with a G-family (ID47, Hitag 3) transponder on the keyed LX, and a KR5V1X smart fob, also ID47, on EX and above. We cut and program both by OBD, including all-keys-lost. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour.

The 2016–2022 HR-V uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Honda HR-V key guide.

Honda's feature guides list Smart Entry and push-button start as 'EX and above' for this generation — LX keeps the keyed ignition (MLBHLIK6-1T, G chip); smart trims use the KR5V1X fob (also ID47). pushToStart reflects the keyed base trim.

What key does a 2016 HR-V use, and what does that mean for you?

Honda's feature guides list Smart Entry and push-button start as EX and above for this generation. That splits the 2016 HR-V into two setups, and the first thing we sort out is which one you have.

The base LX keeps a keyed ignition. Its key is a remote-head key (MLBHLIK6-1T) with a G-family transponder chip, ID47 on the Hitag 3 platform. The remote buttons are built into the head, and the chip inside lets the car's immobilizer recognize the key. The metal blade also turns the ignition, so a copy without a chip will turn the lock but will not start the engine.

Smart trims use the KR5V1X fob, which also carries an ID47 chip. You carry it and push a button to start. Even so, the fob has a mechanical backup key inside, so you can still open the driver's door if the fob battery dies.

  • LX: keyed ignition, remote-head key, G chip (ID47, Hitag 3)
  • EX and above: push-button start, KR5V1X smart fob, also ID47
  • Both setups have a mechanical backup key

Duplicate key or all keys lost: how each works on this HR-V

If you still have a working key, duplication is the simpler job. For this car the original key is needed to make the copy, so bring it with you or have us come to you. We cut the blade to match and program the new key's chip and remote to the car.

If every key is gone, that is still workable. All-keys-lost is possible on this HR-V. We cut a new key from the car's lock or its information, then program it through the OBD port under the dash. No special NASTF SDRM credential is required for this programming, so it does not turn into a dealer-only job.

  1. Tell us the trim, or whether the car starts with a key turned in the ignition or with a push button.
  2. We confirm the key type, and the VIN if there is any doubt, before we cut or program anything.
  3. We cut the blade, using your original key if you have one, or from the car if you do not.
  4. We program the new key and its remote functions to the car over OBD.
  5. We test the key in the door and ignition or start button, plus every remote button, before we finish.

What affects the price of a 2016 HR-V key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because several real factors change the total. We would rather explain them and then give you a firm figure once we know your situation.

The biggest factor is which key you need. A remote-head key for the LX and a smart fob for an EX or above are different parts. Whether you have a working key to copy also matters, since all-keys-lost takes more steps than a duplicate. Where the car is matters too: coming to our Westwood storefront is usually the more economical route compared with a mobile visit, although a car that cannot be moved is often better served by the van. Finally, the fix may be much smaller than a new key, such as a battery or a replacement shell.

Common HR-V key problems and quick fixes

Before replacing a key, check whether it needs a smaller repair. These are the problems we see on this model.

  • Cracked remote-head shells and worn buttons: the electronics can often be moved into a fresh shell.
  • Remote battery failure: if the remote stops working but the key still starts the car, start with the battery.
  • Dead smart-fob battery on push-button trims: the dash reports "key not detected." Replace the battery and use the backup key for the door.
  • Hardware-store copies without a transponder: these will turn the lock but will not start the car.

One honest note: we confirm trim and key by VIN

The data for this year is verified: the G-family ID47 chip on the keyed LX and the same chip in the KR5V1X fob. But trim naming varies, and some owners are not sure whether their car is an LX or a higher trim. If anything about your car does not match the descriptions above, we confirm it by VIN or in person before we cut or program anything, so you do not pay for the wrong key.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 2016 Honda HR-V have push-button start?

It depends on the trim. Honda's feature guides list Smart Entry and push-button start as EX and above. The LX keeps a keyed ignition. If you are unsure, we confirm by VIN.

What chip is in a 2016 HR-V key?

The LX remote-head key (MLBHLIK6-1T) uses a G-family transponder, ID47 on Hitag 3. The KR5V1X smart fob on the higher trims also uses ID47.

Can you make a key if I lost all of mine?

Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on this HR-V. We cut a new key and program it through the OBD port. No NASTF SDRM credential is required for this programming.

Will a hardware-store copy start my HR-V?

No. A copy with no transponder chip may turn the lock but will not start the car. The chip has to be programmed to the car.

My dash says "key not detected." Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. On push-button trims this message often means the smart-fob battery is dead. Try a new battery first, and use the mechanical backup key to open the door.

Do I need to bring my original key?

For duplication, yes, the original key is needed. If you have lost every key, call us and we will handle it as an all-keys-lost job.

Can you come to me, or do I have to go to the shop?

Both work. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour and we will work out which suits your car.
