The 2023–2024 CR-V uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Honda CR-V key guide.

What kind of key does the 2023 CR-V use?
The 2023 CR-V is a sixth-generation model, and push-button start is standard. Its key is a smart proximity fob, the KR5TP-4, built on the Hitag AES 4A transponder platform (an NXP chip family). The car senses the fob when it is nearby, so you never put a key in an ignition. The fob still has to be programmed to your specific car before it will start the engine. A cut blade alone does nothing for starting.
Inside the fob is a mechanical backup key, the emergency blade. It is easy to forget about until you need it. The problems we hear about on this model are fairly consistent:
- A dead fob battery. The dash reports 'key not detected,' but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
- A lost fob. Replacing one costs more than replacing an older bladed key.
- A water-damaged or crushed fob, usually from a pocket in the wash or a fob that got stepped on or sat on.
Duplicate or all keys lost: what is different for this setup?
For the CR-V's fob, making a duplicate requires an original key. If you still have one working fob, adding a spare is usually the more economical route, and it is worth doing before the only fob goes missing.
All keys lost is possible on this platform, but there is nothing to copy from, so the job is more involved. The car is programmed through the OBD port. Aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage for this platform arrived after the model launched, so we confirm that our tools cover your car before we quote. We would rather tell you that up front than start work and find out later.
- Call us and give us your VIN and what you have: one fob, a damaged fob, or none.
- We confirm tool coverage for your vehicle and tell you plainly what we can do.
- We come to you with a mobile van, or you come to our Westwood storefront.
- We prepare the emergency blade and program the new fob to the car through the OBD port.
- We test the fob with the car before we hand it over, including push-button start.
What affects the cost of a 2023 CR-V key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real answer depends on your situation. These are the factors that move the cost:
- Whether you have an original key. A duplicate from a working fob is lighter in cost than all keys lost.
- The fob itself. A smart proximity fob costs more than the older bladed keys many owners are used to.
- Condition of the old fob. Water damage or a crushed case can mean the fob cannot be reused.
- Where the work happens. Mobile service to your location is different from bringing the car to the storefront.
- Tool coverage. All keys lost on this platform depends on confirming that our equipment supports your car.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What we confirm by VIN instead of assuming
The chip family for this year is verified: 4A, NXP Hitag AES. What is less settled is how far aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage extends, since it arrived after launch. We also have not verified whether any extra manufacturer security access is needed to program this car, so we check that by VIN rather than guess.
If your situation turns out to be one we cannot cover, we will say so and tell you what your options are. If you are not sure which situation you are in, describe it on the phone or send details through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Does the 2023 Honda CR-V use a transponder key?
Yes, but it is a smart proximity fob rather than a bladed key. It is the KR5TP-4, on the Hitag AES 4A platform, with push-button start. The chip family is verified. It has a hidden emergency blade for the door.
My CR-V says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is one of the common causes of that message, and the hidden emergency blade will still open the door. If the message continues, call us and we can work out whether the fob or the car is at fault.
Can you copy my CR-V fob if I only have one?
Yes. Duplication on this setup requires an original key, and having one working fob is the easier situation. It is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
Can you make a key if I have lost every fob?
All keys lost is possible on this platform, with programming done through the OBD port. Aftermarket coverage for it arrived after launch, so we confirm our tools support your vehicle by VIN before we quote.
Do you come to me, or do I have to bring the car in?
Either works. We have mobile vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. If the car will not move because you have no working fob, mobile service is usually the practical choice.
Why does a replacement fob cost more than an old-style key?
A smart fob contains a chip and electronics that must be programmed to your car. A bladed key is mainly a cut piece of metal. Your cost depends on factors such as whether you have an original fob, plus the fob and the tool coverage required.
Is a 2023 CR-V key a dealer-only job?
The data we have does not flag it as dealer-only. For all keys lost, we confirm tool coverage by VIN first, and if we cannot cover your car we will tell you honestly.
