2014 Honda CR-V key replacement

The 2014 Honda CR-V uses a remote-head key with a Honda G transponder chip (ID47, Hitag 3), programmed through the OBD port with no special security registration. We cut and program it at our Westwood shop or by mobile van, even when every key is lost. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour.

The 2014–2022 CR-V uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Honda CR-V key guide.

Boundary year: the CR-V switched to the Honda G chip (MLBHLIK6-1T) for 2014 — US vendors and the transpondery catalog agree, but 2012-2013 ID46 keys look identical, so we confirm from the key stamp or part number on boundary cars. No factory smart-key option this year.

What kind of key does a 2014 CR-V use?

The 2014 CR-V came with a remote-head key: the metal blade and the remote are one piece, folded into a single plastic head. There is no push-to-start and no factory smart-key option this year, so you are always turning a physical key in the ignition.

Inside the head is a Honda G transponder chip (ID47, Hitag 3). The car checks that chip before the engine will run. That is why a plain blade cut at a hardware store may turn in the door and then do nothing at the ignition. The parts sources we check agree on this chip for the year, and the data for this car is verified.

The problems we see on this key are ordinary ones:

  • Cracked remote-head shells and worn-through buttons
  • Remote batteries that have simply died
  • Non-transponder copies that will not start the car

Duplicate or all keys lost: what does each involve on this car?

A duplicate is the easier job. We need one original working key to start from. We cut a new blade, then program the new chip and remote to the car through the OBD port. A dead remote battery on its own does not mean you need a new key, so we check that first, since it is the lighter-cost fix when it is the only fault.

All keys lost is still possible on this model. It takes more steps than a duplicate because there is no working key to work from, and the car has to be with us, either at the shop or wherever our van can reach it. The programming on this year does not require NASTF SDRM registry access, which removes one common source of delay.

The data also shows a mechanical backup key exists for this setup. Keep in mind that a plain mechanical key can work a door lock but is not a substitute for a transponder key at the ignition.

  1. Tell us the year, model, and whether you still have any working key.
  2. We confirm the chip from the key stamp, part number, or VIN.
  3. We cut the blade to fit the car.
  4. We program the transponder and remote over the OBD port.
  5. We test the door, the remote buttons, and the ignition before you leave.

What affects the price of a 2014 CR-V key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the job decides the cost. These are the real factors:

  • Duplicate versus all keys lost. Starting from a working key is the more economical route.
  • Whether you need a full new key or only a new shell, buttons, or battery on a key that still works.
  • How many keys you want programmed at once.
  • Where the car is. Bringing it to our Westwood storefront differs from sending a van to you.
  • The time of day, since we answer around the clock.
  • Confirming the right chip before ordering the key, which prevents paying for a part that will not program.

What do we confirm by VIN on a 2014?

2014 is a boundary year. The CR-V moved to the Honda G chip (MLBHLIK6-1T) for 2014, and the US vendors and the transpondery catalog agree on that. The catch is that 2012 and 2013 keys use an ID46 chip and look identical to the 2014 key.

So we do not guess from appearance. On a boundary car we check the key stamp or part number, and we confirm by VIN or in person before cutting or programming anything. If your key is a leftover from a different year, it may not be the right one, and we would rather tell you that up front.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 2014 Honda CR-V have a push-to-start key?

No. The 2014 CR-V uses a remote-head key that goes into the ignition, and there is no factory smart-key option this year.

Will a hardware-store copy start my 2014 CR-V?

No. The car needs a key with a programmed transponder chip. A plain blade may open the door but will not start the engine.

Can you make a key if I have lost every key?

Yes, all keys lost is possible on this model. The car must be at our shop or reachable by our van, and we program the new key through the OBD port.

Do you need my original key to make a copy?

For a duplicate, yes, we start from one original working key. If you have none, that becomes an all-keys-lost job.

Is my key the right one if I bought it for a 2012 or 2013 CR-V?

Maybe not. Those years use an ID46 chip and the keys look identical to the 2014 key. We check the key stamp or part number and confirm by VIN before we program anything.

Do I need the dealer for a 2014 CR-V key?

Not for this year, based on our data. Programming is done through the OBD port and does not require NASTF SDRM registry access.

My remote stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Not always. A dead battery is common, and cracked shells and worn buttons can often be addressed without replacing the whole key. We check the simple causes first.

We cover all these cities
