The 2007–2013 CR-V uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Honda CR-V key guide.

What kind of key does a 2007 Honda CR-V use?
The 2007 CR-V uses a remote-head key. The lock remote is built into the head of the key, and the metal blade folds out or sits fixed beside it. It is not a push-to-start car, so there is no smart fob to carry in a pocket. You put a key in the ignition and turn it.
Inside the plastic head is a transponder chip from the ID46 family (PCF7936/7961, Hitag 2). When you turn the key, the car reads that chip. If the chip is missing or has not been programmed to the car, the engine will not run, even though the blade turns the lock perfectly. The key we typically work with for this setup is the MLBHLIK-1T remote-head key.
That is why the cheap blank from a hardware store is a trap on this vehicle. It may turn in the ignition and still never start the car, because it has no chip. We see people pay to have one cut and then find out it only opens the door.
- Key type: remote-head key with built-in lock remote
- Chip: ID46 (PCF7936/7961, Hitag 2)
- Ignition: turn-key, not push-to-start
- A mechanical backup key exists for this car, but the chip is what lets the engine run
Duplicate key or all keys lost: how do the two jobs differ?
For this CR-V, both jobs are possible. They are not the same job, though, and it helps to know which one you are facing before you call.
- Duplicate from an original: you still have at least one working key. We cut a new blade, add a transponder-equipped remote-head key, and program it to the car. The original key is needed for this route, and it is usually the more economical one.
- All keys lost: this is also possible on this model. With no original to copy from, we cut the key by the vehicle's information and program a new one to the car from scratch. It takes more steps and more time on site.
- Call us and tell us the year, model, and whether you have any working key.
- We confirm the key by VIN before anything is cut or ordered.
- We cut the blade to fit the door and ignition locks.
- We program the transponder and remote to the car through the OBD port.
- We test the key in the ignition, the door lock, and the remote buttons before we leave.
How is the key programmed, and where do we come to you?
The data for this year shows programming is done through the OBD port under the dash. It does not require NASTF SDRM secure access, so we do not have to go through a special registry login to do the work. That keeps the job simple in most cases.
We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024 in Westwood, and mobile service vans. If your CR-V will not start and you cannot drive it, we can come to the car. If you can get it to us, bring it by the shop. Either way, it is one company handling it, with no dispatcher passing your call to a stranger. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2007 CR-V key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because the job changes the cost. These are the things that move it:
- Duplicate or all keys lost. Copying from a working key is usually the lighter-cost route; starting from nothing takes more labor.
- Where the work happens. Coming to your car involves travel, while bringing the car to the storefront does not.
- How many keys you need. A spare programmed at the same visit is more efficient than coming back later.
- Condition of the key head. A cracked shell or worn buttons may only need a new shell, while a dead remote may need a full replacement head.
- Time of day. We answer around the clock, and after-hours calls can differ from daytime appointments.
- Ignition condition. If the lock itself is worn, that is a separate repair from the key.
Common problems we see, and one honest note
The problems that come up on this year are predictable: worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars, cracked remote-head shells and worn buttons, remote battery failure, and non-transponder copies that will not start the car. A dead remote battery is not a lost key, so try that first if only the buttons stopped working. If the key turns hard or sticks in the ignition, the lock wafers may be the real culprit, and a new key will not always fix that.
On accuracy: the chip data for this year is verified across several parts suppliers. Still, we confirm by VIN before cutting or ordering, because we do not want to sell you a key that does not match your particular car. If anything looks different once we are in front of it, we will tell you plainly.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a 2007 Honda CR-V key if I lost every key?
Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on this model. We cut a new key and program it to the car through the OBD port. We confirm the details by VIN first.
Do I need to bring an original key?
Not for an all-keys-lost job, but a duplicate from an original key is the more economical route. If you have one working key, hold on to it and tell us when you call.
Will a hardware-store copy start my CR-V?
No. The 2007 CR-V needs a transponder chip, an ID46 family chip, programmed to the car. A plain copy may turn the lock but will not start the engine.
Is the 2007 CR-V a push-to-start car?
No. It uses a turn-key ignition with a remote-head key, so there is no push-button start and no smart fob.
My remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a new key?
Not always. Remote battery failure is common, and worn buttons or a cracked shell can often be fixed without replacing everything. If the car still starts, the chip is fine.
Should I ask if the locksmith is licensed?
Yes. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work begins.
