2005 Honda CR-V key replacement

A 2005 Honda CR-V uses an ID46 transponder remote-head key, and it has no push-to-start. We can cut and program a new one on-site through the OBD port, even if every key is lost. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour and we'll confirm the details for your car.

The 2005–2006 CR-V uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Honda CR-V key guide.

Mid-generation key change: 2005-2006 use the OUCG8D-380H-A ID46 remote-head key.

What kind of key does a 2005 Honda CR-V use?

Your 2005 CR-V uses a remote-head key. The metal blade and the lock/unlock remote are built into one plastic head. This is not a push-to-start car, so there is no smart fob and no start button. The key goes into the ignition and turns.

Inside the head is an ID46 transponder chip (PCF7936, Hitag 2). The car reads that chip before it lets the engine run. That is why a plain hardware-store copy, which only duplicates the blade, can turn in the ignition and still not start the car. The chip has to be programmed to your CR-V.

Honda changed keys partway through this generation. For 2005 and 2006 the key is the OUCG8D-380H-A ID46 remote-head key. The data for this setup also shows a mechanical backup key, so the blade side of the system works the locks on its own if the remote side stops responding.

The problems we see most often on this year are:

  • Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars, which make a key stick, turn roughly, or stop turning
  • Cracked remote-head shells and worn buttons
  • Remote battery failure, which kills the remote but not the ability to start the car
  • Non-transponder copies from a hardware store that will not start the car

Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?

If you still have one working key, duplicating is the easier route. For this CR-V an original key is needed to make a duplicate, and we use it as the starting point for the new blade and the new chip programming. Make the spare while you still have the original. It is almost always less work than starting from nothing.

If every key is gone, it is still possible to get you driving again. All-keys-lost on a 2005 CR-V can be handled: we make a new key, then program it to the car through the OBD port. Programming on this model does not require NASTF SDRM access, so it does not hinge on a secure-data login that slows the job down. It just involves more steps than a copy, and we will want to confirm the car and your ownership before we start.

Either way, the key we make needs the right ID46 chip and the right blade. Buying a blank blade by itself and hoping is the mistake that costs people time on this model.

How we handle a 2005 CR-V key, step by step

The process is the same whether you are in Westwood at our storefront or we come to you in one of our mobile vans.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the car is a 2005 CR-V and whether you have any working key.
  2. We confirm the vehicle by VIN and ask for proof that the car is yours.
  3. We cut the blade to fit your ignition and doors, working from your existing key if you have one.
  4. We program the ID46 transponder to the car through the OBD port.
  5. We program the remote buttons, then test the lock, the unlock, and the ignition start with every key we hand you.

What affects the price of a 2005 CR-V key?

We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your situation. These are the things that move the cost:

  • Whether you have a working key to copy from or all keys are lost
  • How many keys you want made
  • Whether you need the remote side too, or only a key that starts the car
  • Whether only the shell is cracked, since a shell swap onto a good key is usually the more economical route
  • Whether worn ignition wafers are causing the trouble and the ignition needs work, not just a new key
  • Where you are and what time you call, since a mobile visit at night differs from a visit to our shop

What we confirm by VIN, and why call us

The chip family and key type above are verified for this year. Because Honda changed keys mid-generation, we still confirm by VIN before cutting anything. That check matters most if the car has had an ignition replaced or a previous owner had keys made elsewhere. If anything in front of us doesn't match, we tell you plainly before we do the work.

Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles, plus mobile vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You get one company, not a dispatch service passing your job to a stranger. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. The phone is answered 24 hours a day.

Frequently asked questions

Can a hardware store copy start my 2005 CR-V?

Not unless the copy has a programmed ID46 transponder chip. A blade-only copy may turn in the ignition but will not start the engine. The chip has to be programmed to your car.

Do you need my original key to make a duplicate?

Yes, for a duplicate on this CR-V we need an original key. If you have none, we treat it as an all-keys-lost job, which is still possible but takes more steps.

Can you make a key if I lost every key?

Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on a 2005 CR-V. We make a new key and program it through the OBD port. We confirm the VIN and your ownership first.

Is the 2005 CR-V a push-to-start car?

No. It uses a remote-head key that goes into the ignition and turns. There is no smart fob and no start button.

My remote stopped working but the key starts the car. What is wrong?

Often it is just the remote battery, since battery failure affects the remote buttons and not the transponder. Worn buttons or a cracked shell can also cause it. We can check and tell you which one it is.

Is the key the same for 2005 and 2006 CR-Vs?

Per our data, 2005 and 2006 use the same OUCG8D-380H-A ID46 remote-head key. Honda changed keys mid-generation, so we still confirm by VIN before cutting.

Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?

Either. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and our mobile vans can come to you. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out which fits your situation. You can also see all our car key services.
