Eleventh generation: push-button start is standard on every trim (KR5TP-4 fob, Hitag AES 4A). Aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage lagged at the 2022 launch and some early jobs were dealer-only; current pro tools cover these cars — we confirm tool coverage by year and fob part number before quoting.

What kind of key does a 2022 Civic use?

The 2022 Civic is from the eleventh generation, and push-button start is standard on every trim. Whatever version you own, the key is a smart proximity fob. The part number we look for is KR5TP-4, and the chip inside belongs to the 4A family (NXP Hitag AES). That chip data comes from a verified source, not guesswork.

For you as the owner, that means there is no traditional bladed key you can simply walk into a hardware store and copy. The car checks for the fob electronically, and a replacement fob has to be programmed to the vehicle before it will start the engine. Cutting metal alone does not get you a working key.

Every one of these fobs also carries a mechanical backup blade hidden inside the case. It exists so you can still open the door when the electronics fail. It does not start the car on its own.

Dead battery, lost fob or crushed fob: which one do you have?

The most common call on this car is also the least expensive to fix. If the dash says the key is not detected but the hidden blade still opens the door, the fob battery is usually the culprit. That is a small repair, and we can tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a battery or something worse.

The two harder problems are a lost fob and a damaged one. Lost-fob replacement costs more than it did with older bladed keys, simply because a programmed smart fob is a more involved part. Water-damaged and crushed fobs are the other regular problem on this model. A fob that went through the wash or got stepped on in a parking lot may open the door with the blade but never talk to the car again.

  • Key not detected, blade opens the door: try a fresh battery first.
  • Fob visibly cracked, wet, or crushed: usually needs replacement and programming.
  • No fob at all: this is a lost-key situation, covered below.

Do you need a duplicate or an all-keys-lost replacement?

For this setup, both routes are possible. If you still have one working fob, we can make an additional one from it. Duplication on this car does require the original key to be present, which is why a spare is worth making before you lose the only one.

If every fob is gone, all keys lost is still possible on a 2022 Civic. It takes more work because there is no working key to copy from, so the new fob has to be introduced to the car's immobilizer from scratch. We do this by connecting to the OBD port under the dash. We can come to you with a mobile van, which matters because a car with no key often cannot be driven to a shop.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and give us the year, model, and, if you can, the VIN from the dashboard or door jamb.
  2. We confirm the fob part number and our tool coverage for your car before we quote anything.
  3. We come to you, or you come to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, if the car can be moved.
  4. We verify ownership, supply the fob, and program it through the OBD port.
  5. We test the door, the push-button start, and any other fobs you want kept working before we finish.

What affects the cost, and what we confirm before quoting

We won't quote numbers on a web page, because the price depends on your situation. The main factors are:

The honest caveat on this model year: aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage lagged when the 2022 Civic launched, and some early jobs could only be done by a dealer. Current professional tools cover these cars, but we still confirm coverage by year and fob part number before we quote, and we check the VIN in person or by phone. If a particular car turns out to need the dealer, we'll tell you plainly rather than start a job we can't finish.

  • Whether you have a working fob to copy from or have lost every key.
  • Whether the fob is a new part or just needs a battery.
  • Whether the car must stay where it is, so we come to you, or can be brought to the shop.
  • The time of day, since we answer at all hours and nights can differ from weekdays.
  • Whether the fob is damaged enough that the chip or case has to be replaced entirely.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Civic fob

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront in Westwood and mobile vans serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call, you reach us, not a dispatch middleman who sells the job to a stranger. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for that number before they start. Our license number is being added to this site. Meanwhile, if you want to look around first, see our pages on Honda key replacement and the broader Civic key guide. For anything not covered here, contact us and we'll answer directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a 2022 Honda Civic key copied the old-fashioned way?

No. The car uses a smart proximity fob with a 4A Hitag AES chip, so a new fob must be programmed to the vehicle. A metal blade alone will open the door but will not start the car.

My Civic says key not detected. Do I need a new fob?

Often not. A dead fob battery is the usual cause of that message. The hidden emergency blade can still open the door while you sort out the battery. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may be damaged.

Can you make a key if I lost every fob?

Yes, all keys lost is possible on this car. We program the new fob through the OBD port. We confirm tool coverage by year and fob part number before quoting, because early 2022 coverage was uneven.

Do I need to bring my original fob?

For making a duplicate, yes, the original key needs to be present. If you have no fob, that becomes an all-keys-lost job instead, which is still doable but involves more steps.

Will the dealer be my only option?

Not now. Some early 2022 all-keys-lost jobs were dealer-only when the car launched, but current professional tools cover these Civics. If your specific car is an exception, we will tell you before any work begins.

Can you come to me if the car will not move?

Yes. Our mobile vans serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and we answer the phone around the clock at (213) 577-1366. You can also visit our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood.

What should I have ready when I call?

Your VIN, the year and trim, and whether you have any working fob. A photo of the fob helps us check the part number. Our car keys overview lists what we handle for other makes.

We cover all these cities
