2014 Honda Civic key replacement

A 2014 Honda Civic with a standard key uses a remote-head key with a Honda G transponder chip (ID47, Hitag 3), and EX and above use a push-button smart key with the same chip. We cut and program both by OBD, even if every key is lost. Call (213) 577-1366.

The 2014–2021 Civic uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Honda Civic key guide.

Bladed keys moved to the Honda G chip (MLBHLIK6-1T) for 2014 — one year after the Accord. Some overview catalogs still show ID46 bladed keys through 2015, so we confirm from the key stamp on boundary cars. EX and above gained a push-button smart key (also ID47); pushToStart reflects the keyed base trims.

What kind of key does a 2014 Civic use?

The base trims of the 2014 Civic use a remote-head key: a metal blade, a transponder chip inside the plastic head, and lock/unlock buttons built into the same piece. The chip is the Honda G family, ID47 (Hitag 3). Two independent hardware suppliers list it that way, and we treat this as verified.

Honda moved its bladed keys to the G chip for 2014, one year after the Accord. If you have owned older Civics, that is the detail that catches people out: an older key that looks nearly identical may carry a different chip and will not start this car.

EX trims and above gained a push-button smart key, which is also ID47. That key still hides a mechanical backup blade, so the door can be opened by hand if the fob battery dies.

  • Keyed base trims: remote-head key, G chip (ID47, Hitag 3)
  • EX and above: push-button smart key, also ID47, with a mechanical backup key
  • Programming method: through the OBD port
  • No NASTF SDRM access is required for this year

Duplicate key or all keys lost: how does it work on this Civic?

If you still have a working key, a duplicate is the simpler job. For this car an original key needs to be present for duplication, so the best time to make a spare is before the last one disappears. We cut the blade, set up the remote-head, and program the chip to the car through the OBD port.

If every key is gone, that is still possible on a 2014 Civic. It takes more steps, because there is no original to work from, and the car has to be identified and the new key tied to it from scratch. We do this at the car, either at your location with a mobile van or after the car has been brought to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.

One warning we repeat often: a copy from a hardware store that has only a cut blade, with no transponder chip, will turn the lock but will not start this car. If a key was cut cheaply somewhere and the engine will not crank over, the missing chip is almost always the reason.

What are the common problems with 2014 Civic keys?

Most calls about this year come down to a short list of issues, and not every one of them needs a new key.

  • Cracked remote-head shells and worn buttons. The chip often still works, so the key may only need a new shell or a fresh remote setup.
  • Remote battery failure. If the buttons stopped working but the key still starts the car, start with the battery.
  • Dead smart-fob battery on push-button trims. The dash shows a 'key not detected' message. Use the mechanical backup blade to get in and replace the fob battery before assuming the fob is dead.
  • Non-transponder copies that will not start the car, as described above.

What affects the price of a 2014 Civic key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real figure depends on your situation. These are the factors that move it:

  • Which key you have: a remote-head key and a push-button smart key are different parts.
  • Whether you have a working key to copy, or all keys are lost.
  • How many keys you need made and programmed in the same visit.
  • Whether the old key just needs a new shell or battery, which is usually the more economical route compared with a full replacement.
  • Where the car is: coming to our storefront in Westwood is a different job from a mobile call-out.
  • The time of day you call. We answer the phone 24 hours a day, every day.

What do we confirm by VIN on this year?

Some overview catalogs still list ID46 bladed keys for the Civic through 2015. Our verified data for 2014 says G chip (ID47), but we do not assume on cars near the boundary. We check the stamp on the key if you have one, and we confirm by VIN and in person before we cut or program anything.

That also means we will tell you plainly if anything about your particular car differs from what is listed. If you are not sure whether you have a base-trim key or a smart key, describe the car when you call and we will sort it out from there.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront in Westwood and mobile vans. You deal with one company, with no dispatcher passing your job to a stranger, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith you call for it. Honest companies will not mind the question.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 2014 Honda Civic have a transponder chip in the key?

Yes. The bladed remote-head key uses a Honda G chip (ID47, Hitag 3), and the push-button smart key on EX and above is also ID47. A plain cut key with no chip will not start the car.

Can you make a 2014 Civic key if I lost all of them?

Yes, all keys lost is possible for this car. We identify the vehicle, cut a new key, and program it through the OBD port. It involves more steps than a duplicate, so the work takes longer.

Do I need an original key to make a copy?

For duplication on this car, yes, an original key needs to be available. If you only have one key left, make a spare now rather than waiting until it is lost.

My Civic says 'key not detected'. Is the fob broken?

On push-button trims that message often means the smart-fob battery has died. Use the mechanical backup blade to open the door, and replace the battery before deciding the fob needs replacing.

My remote buttons stopped working but the car still starts. What now?

That points to the remote battery or worn buttons, not the transponder chip. Cracked shells and worn buttons are common on this year, and often the key can be repaired instead of replaced.

Do you need dealer access to program a 2014 Civic key?

No. Programming is done through the OBD port, and NASTF SDRM access is not required for this year, so we can handle it without a dealer.

How do I know which key my 2014 Civic has?

A keyed base-trim car uses a bladed remote-head key. EX and above use a push-button smart key. If you are unsure, we confirm by VIN and by the stamp on the key before cutting anything.

We cover all these cities
