2023 Honda Accord key replacement

The 2023 Honda Accord uses a push-button smart fob on the Hitag AES 4A platform, so a replacement needs programming to the car through the OBD port, not just cutting. Lost every key? We can still help. Call Wilshire Lock & Key at (213) 577-1366, any hour.

Eleventh generation: KR5TP-4 smart fob on the Hitag AES 4A platform, push-button standard on every trim.

What key does the 2023 Accord use?

The 2023 Accord is the eleventh generation, and every trim comes with push-button start. The key is a smart proximity fob, the KR5TP-4, built on the Hitag AES platform with a 4A chip family. That chip family is verified for this year against our transponder reference. The car senses the fob nearby, so you can unlock the doors and start the engine with the fob still in your pocket or bag.

For an owner, that changes what a replacement means. A smart fob is a small radio transmitter with an encrypted chip inside. A new fob out of the package knows nothing about your car. It has to be introduced to the car's immobilizer through the OBD port before the Accord will accept it. Cutting a blade alone gets you into the door, but it will not start the engine.

  • Key type: smart proximity fob, push-to-start on every trim
  • Chip family: 4A (Hitag AES), verified
  • Programming method: OBD port
  • Mechanical backup key: yes, a hidden emergency blade inside the fob

What happens when the fob battery dies or the fob gets damaged?

The most common problem on this car is a weak fob battery. The dash shows a 'key not detected' message and the car will not behave normally, even though the fob itself is fine. Because the fob has a hidden emergency blade, you can still open the door by hand. That blade is your way in, not a way to drive off, so a dead battery is worth fixing before it strands you.

The other two problems we see listed for this generation are more expensive ones. Water-damaged fobs and crushed fobs often fail outright, and a lost fob costs more to replace than the old bladed keys did. If your fob went through a wash cycle or got stepped on in a parking lot, bring it along even if it looks dead. Sometimes the situation is only a battery, and we will tell you so before replacing anything.

Duplicate key or all keys lost: how does it work for this Accord?

If you still have a working fob, making another is the simpler job. On this setup the original key is needed for duplication, so having one fob in hand keeps the work straightforward. We program the new fob to the car through the OBD port and check that it unlocks, starts the car, and is recognized when you walk up with it.

If you have lost every fob, that is still possible to solve. All-keys-lost is supported for this Accord, and we do it by programming a new fob to the car from scratch. It takes more steps because there is no existing key to work from, which is a large part of why it costs more. The car usually needs to be with us or we come to it, since the work happens at the vehicle itself. If you are stuck somewhere, a mobile van can come to you, and if you can get the car to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, that works too.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and whether you have any working fob left.
  2. We confirm the details for your car by VIN.
  3. We bring a matching fob and programming equipment, or you bring the car to the storefront.
  4. We program the fob through the OBD port, test every function, and program any spare fobs you want added in the same visit.
  5. If a battery was the only issue, we replace it and check that the 'key not detected' message is gone.

What affects the cost of a 2023 Accord key?

A smart fob costs more than the older metal bladed keys, and that is simply the nature of the hardware. The main factors on this car are:

  • Whether you have a working fob to copy or you are in an all-keys-lost situation
  • Whether the fob needs replacing or just a battery
  • Where the work happens: our storefront, or a mobile van coming to you
  • How many fobs you want programmed at once
  • The time of day, since we answer around the clock and night calls are staffed differently

What we confirm by VIN before we start

One item in our data for this year is not settled: whether a manufacturer-side authorization step is needed for programming. We do not guess about it. When you call, we confirm by VIN and in person what your specific car needs before we quote or begin. You will hear the answer from us plainly, including if anything about your car turns out to be a dealer-only situation.

Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront and our own mobile vans, and no outside dispatch company in between. David oversees the work. Frequently asked questions

What type of key does a 2023 Honda Accord have?

It has a smart proximity fob, the KR5TP-4, with push-button start on every trim. The chip is from the Hitag AES 4A family.

My Accord says 'key not detected.' Is the key broken?

Often it is just a dead fob battery. The hidden emergency blade in the fob will still open the door. If a new battery does not solve it, the fob itself may be damaged and we can test it.

Can you make a new key if I lost all of mine?

Yes. All-keys-lost is possible for this Accord. We program a new fob to the car through the OBD port. It involves more work than copying an existing fob, so it generally costs more.

Do I need my original fob to get a duplicate?

For duplication on this setup, yes, the original key is needed. If you have none left, we treat it as an all-keys-lost job.

Can a bladed key alone start my 2023 Accord?

No. The emergency blade opens the door only. Starting the car requires a programmed smart fob.

Will you come to me, or do I have to bring the car?

Either works. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans. Call (213) 577-1366, answered 24 hours a day, to arrange it.

Is there anything you cannot say for sure about this year?

We cannot say in advance whether any manufacturer-side authorization is needed for your particular car. We confirm by VIN and in person, and we will tell you straight if anything on your Accord is dealer-only.
