Rollout year: Type B PATS (Texas 4C chip, H72-PT key) is listed for 1999-2000 Rangers, but 2.5L four-cylinder trucks and some early-production trucks have no PATS and take a plain H75 mechanical key — we test the truck or read the existing key before cutting.
What kind of key does a 2000 Ford Ranger use?
The year 2000 is a rollout year for Ford's Passive Anti-Theft System, or PATS, on the Ranger. The published data lists Type B PATS for 1999 and 2000 Rangers. That system uses a Texas 4C transponder chip in the key head, and the key is commonly listed as an H72-PT. Our data on the 4C chip family is verified against two separate sources.
Here is the catch: not every 2000 Ranger has PATS. The 2.5L four-cylinder trucks, and some early-production trucks, have no PATS at all and take a plain H75 mechanical key with no chip. So the model year alone does not tell you which key your truck needs. Two 2000 Rangers parked side by side can need different keys.
This matters because of how the two key types behave. A plain, chipless copy will turn the ignition and crank the engine on a PATS-equipped truck, but the truck will not start and run. Many owners think the copy is faulty when the real issue is the missing chip. The Ranger is not a push-to-start truck. It uses a conventional key in the ignition cylinder either way.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: how does it differ on this truck?
If you still have a working key, making a duplicate is the simpler job. For this setup the original key is needed as the starting point. On a PATS truck we cut the blade and program the new chip to the truck. On a non-PATS truck it is a straightforward cut of a mechanical key.
If every key is gone, we can still help. All-keys-lost is possible on this Ranger, and the programming is done through the OBD port. The NASTF SDRM credential is not required for this one. Without a key to read, we confirm by VIN and by testing the truck whether PATS is present before deciding what to cut and program. That extra step is the main difference from a duplicate job, and it adds some time and labor.
How do we handle a 2000 Ranger key, step by step?
The order matters on this truck, because guessing wrong wastes a key blank. This is how we work through it.
- Find out whether the truck has PATS. If you have a key, we read it. If you do not, we test the truck and confirm by VIN.
- Check the ignition lock and the existing key blade for wear, since worn parts can make a good new key behave badly.
- Cut the key to the correct blank: an H72-PT style transponder key for PATS trucks, or a plain H75 mechanical key for trucks without PATS.
- On PATS trucks, program the new key to the truck through the OBD port and confirm that it starts and runs, not just cranks.
- Test every key we hand you in the ignition, the door, and the other locks it is meant to operate.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2000 Ranger key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real cost depends on your truck. These are the things that move it:
- Whether the truck has PATS. A plain mechanical key is usually the more economical route, and a transponder key costs more because of the chip and the programming.
- Duplicate versus all keys lost. Working from an existing key is less involved than starting from nothing.
- The condition of the ignition and locks. Worn wafers or a sticking cylinder may need attention before any new key will work well.
- How many keys you need cut or programmed in one visit.
- Where the truck is. We have a Westwood storefront and mobile vans, and a truck that cannot be driven can be handled on site.
What is still unconfirmed, and why we check first
Our own data for this year is marked as conflicting. The 4C chip itself is verified, but sources disagree on exactly which 2000 Rangers carry PATS, because production changed during the year. Rather than guess, we test the truck or read your existing key before we cut anything. If the VIN or the test leaves any doubt, we say so plainly.
Common trouble on these trucks is ordinary age: worn ignition lock wafers, keys that stick on high-mileage trucks, and blades so worn they no longer turn the locks. If your key has started to stick, replacing only the key may not fix it. We look at the cylinder too.

Frequently asked questions
Does every 2000 Ford Ranger have a transponder chip?
No. PATS with a 4C chip is listed for 1999 to 2000 Rangers, but 2.5L four-cylinder trucks and some early-production trucks have no PATS and use a plain H75 mechanical key. We test the truck or read the existing key to find out.
My copied Ranger key cranks but will not start. Why?
That is the classic sign of a chipless copy on a PATS truck. The key turns the ignition, so the engine cranks, but the truck does not recognize a programmed chip and will not run. A transponder key programmed to the truck fixes it.
Can you make a key if I lost all of them?
Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on this truck, and programming is done through the OBD port. We confirm by VIN and test whether PATS is present before cutting or programming.
Do you need my original key to duplicate it?
For a duplicate, yes, the original key is needed as the starting point. If you have no key left, that becomes an all-keys-lost job instead.
Does programming require a dealer?
Not for this truck. Programming is done through the OBD port and the NASTF SDRM credential is not required, so we handle it ourselves rather than sending you to a dealer.
My key sticks in the ignition. Is it the key or the lock?
On high-mileage Rangers it can be either. Worn ignition lock wafers and worn key blades are both common. We check both before recommending a new key, since a new key will not cure a worn cylinder.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before work begins.
Can you come to my truck?
We run mobile service vans as well as a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366, answered 24 hours a day, to discuss where the truck is.
