The 2015–2020 F-150 uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Ford F-150 key guide.

Bladed remote-head key (N5F-A08TDA, Hitag Pro) on XL/XLT; Lariat and up use a smart proximity fob with push-button start (also Hitag Pro family).
What kind of key does a 2015 F-150 use?
It depends on the trim. On XL and XLT trucks, the key is a bladed remote-head key: a metal blade for the ignition, with the lock, unlock and panic buttons built into the plastic head. Inside the head is a 128-bit transponder chip from the NXP Hitag Pro family (PCF7939F). The truck will not start unless it reads that chip and recognizes it, even if the blade turns the ignition freely.
Lariat and higher trims use a smart proximity fob with push-button start. That fob is also in the Hitag Pro family. These are different parts, so we do not guess which one you need from the model year alone. For the full range of trucks we handle, see our Ford F-150 key page.
The problems we see on this year tend to be ordinary wear:
- Cracked remote-head key shells and worn-out buttons
- Key or remote battery failure
- The PATS theft light flashing, where the engine cranks but will not start because the chip is not being read
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage trucks
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what is the difference?
For this truck, making a duplicate requires an original key that still works. If you have one, the job is the more economical route: we cut a new blade, and program the chip and remote to the truck.
If you have lost every key, it is still possible. We do not need to tow the truck to a dealer for this setup, and programming is done through the OBD port. Our work on this year does not require NASTF SDRM access. Without a working key we have to start from the vehicle itself rather than from a key we can copy.
A mechanical backup key exists for this truck, which is worth knowing if you ever lock yourself out or a battery dies. A blade alone will not start the engine, though. The chip still has to be programmed.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the trim, or read us the VIN from the dash or driver's door jamb.
- We confirm which key your truck takes: remote-head or smart fob.
- We confirm ownership before any key is made or programmed.
- We cut the blade, if your truck uses one, from the lock code or the original.
- We program the chip and remote through the OBD port.
- We test the ignition, the remote functions and a restart before we finish.
What affects the price of an F-150 key?
We will not quote a number on a web page, because the real answer depends on your truck and situation. These are the things that move the cost:
Beyond those, a worn ignition may need separate work, and we will tell you that before starting rather than after.
- Which key you have: a bladed remote-head key and a smart fob are different parts with different costs
- How many keys you need programmed
- Whether you have a working key to copy or all keys are lost
- Where the truck is: our storefront or somewhere our mobile vans have to reach
- Whether the ignition lock or the key shell is damaged and needs repair along with the key
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.

The data on the 2015 F-150 is verified for the chip family and the OBD programming method. The exact key on your truck still turns on its trim level, and some trucks have been modified or had parts replaced over the years. So we confirm the specific key by VIN, or by looking at the truck, before we cut or order anything.
If a previous owner or shop replaced the ignition or the key, the key on your truck may not match the original factory configuration. We would rather check than sell you a key that does not work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they start work on your vehicle. That is a fair question to ask us as well.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. When you call, you reach our company, not a dispatch middleman who passes the job along. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and the phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. If you are not sure which brand page applies, start from our Ford key replacement overview or the main car keys page. You can also contact us with your VIN and trim, or visit our home page for the rest of our services.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a 2015 F-150 key if I lost all of them?
Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on this truck, and programming is done through the OBD port. We confirm ownership and verify the key type by VIN first.
Is my 2015 F-150 key a push-button fob or a regular key?
It depends on the trim. XL and XLT trucks use a bladed remote-head key, while Lariat and up use a smart proximity fob with push-button start. Give us the VIN and we will confirm which one yours takes.
Does the key have a transponder chip?
Yes. It uses a 128-bit chip from the NXP Hitag Pro family (PCF7939F). The truck will not start unless that chip is programmed to it.
Why does the theft light flash and the engine crank but not start?
That is the PATS anti-theft system not reading a recognized chip. It can come from a failing key, a dead battery in the key, or a key that was never programmed to the truck. We diagnose which before replacing anything.
Do I need a dealer for a 2015 F-150 key?
Not for the data we have on this year. Programming is through the OBD port and does not require NASTF SDRM access, so we can handle it ourselves, at our storefront or with a mobile van.
Do I need to bring an existing key to make a copy?
For a duplicate, yes, an original working key is needed. If you have none, we treat it as all keys lost, which is still possible.
Will a cut blade alone start my truck?
No. A blade may turn the ignition, but the engine will not run until the chip is programmed. Cutting a blade and programming the chip are two separate steps.
