The 2025–2026 Expedition uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Ford Expedition key guide.
2025 Ford Expedition: key facts
- Key type
- Smart / proximity key
- Push-to-start
- Yes
- Transponder chip
- Varies by trim — we confirm by VIN
- Programming
- Confirmed per vehicle — call us
- All keys lost
- Depends on trim — call to confirm
New generation: push-button start standard; fob and chip details not verified this session, and aftermarket all-keys-lost support may still be maturing — some jobs may be dealer-or-VSP-only until tool coverage settles. NASTF's own service guidance confirms PATS functions through Ford FDRS/FJDS with a non-dealer login require NASTF VSP credentials or an OEM-assisted immobilizer request; aftermarket tool coverage for these years varies — we confirm current coverage before quoting, and say plainly if a job is dealer-or-VSP-only.
What kind of key does the 2025 Expedition use?
The 2025 Ford Expedition comes with a smart proximity key and push-button start. There is no key to turn in an ignition. The truck senses the fob inside the cabin and lets you start it with the button. Tucked inside the fob is a mechanical emergency blade, which exists for the moment the fob stops communicating with the truck.
That is what we can state for this year. We can also tell you the usual trouble spots. The first is a dead fob battery, where the dash shows a 'No key detected' message even though the fob is in your pocket. The second is a fob that has been through water or been crushed. The third is the cost of a lost fob, which runs higher than it did with older bladed keys.
If the fob is simply weak, pull the hidden blade and open the door with it. Then bring the fob to us before it dies completely. That is usually the lighter-cost fix compared with replacing a lost fob.
Duplicate or all keys lost: how do they differ on this truck?
For this year, the data says an original key is needed to make a duplicate. In practice, if you still have one working fob, you are in the simpler situation. Having a key in hand to work from is a better starting point than having nothing.
All keys lost is a different matter, and we won't gloss over it. This is a new generation, and aftermarket all-keys-lost support may still be maturing. Whether we can do it with our own equipment is not settled for this model year. Some jobs may be dealer-or-VSP-only until tool coverage catches up.
The reason is the immobilizer. NASTF's own service guidance says Ford's PATS functions through FDRS or FJDS with a non-dealer login require NASTF VSP credentials or an OEM-assisted immobilizer request. Aftermarket tool coverage for these years varies. So before we quote an all-keys-lost job, we check current coverage. If the answer is dealer-only, we tell you straight rather than let you wait on a job we can't finish.
- Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and whether you still have any working fob.
- Give us the VIN so we can check current tool coverage for your specific truck.
- We tell you plainly whether the job is something we can do, needs OEM or VSP involvement, or has to go to the dealer.
- If it is ours to do, we come to you with a mobile van or you visit the storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and we cut or program the key and test it before we finish.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2025 Expedition key?
We don't quote numbers on a page, because the honest answer depends on a few things we need to confirm first.
A smart fob costs more than an older bladed key, and that gap is the main reason replacement feels expensive on this truck.
- Whether you have a working key to copy from or have lost every key.
- Whether the job can be handled with aftermarket tools or needs OEM or VSP access.
- Whether you need only a battery or a repair, or a full replacement fob.
- Whether the fob is water-damaged or crushed, which usually rules out a simple fix.
- Whether we come to you with a mobile van or you bring the truck to the storefront.
- How many keys you want made while we are already working on the truck.
What we haven't verified, and why we confirm by VIN
For this year, the chip family and the exact programming method are not verified. We will not guess at a chip type or tell you a procedure works when we haven't confirmed it. That is why the VIN matters: we confirm what applies to your truck before we quote or start work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they touch your vehicle. That applies to us too, so feel free to ask.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We run a storefront in Westwood and mobile vans, and when you call you reach our own company, not a dispatch middleman. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. For more on this truck, see our Ford Expedition key page, the wider Ford key services section, or all car key services. If you'd rather write to us, use the contact page.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 2025 Ford Expedition use a push-button start?
Yes. It uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. The truck reads the fob in the cabin, and you press the button rather than turn a key.
My Expedition says 'No key detected.' Is the fob broken?
Often it is a dead fob battery. The hidden emergency blade inside the fob should still open the door. If a new battery doesn't clear the message, bring the fob in and we'll check it. Water damage or a crushed fob can cause the same symptom.
Can you make a copy if I still have one key?
For this year, an original key is needed to duplicate. If you have one working fob, call us with your VIN and we'll confirm what applies to your truck before quoting.
Can you make a key if I lost every fob?
We can't promise that yet for this model year. Aftermarket all-keys-lost support may still be maturing, and some jobs may be dealer-or-VSP-only. We check current coverage by VIN and tell you plainly which route applies.
What chip or programming method does this key use?
Those details are not verified for the 2025 Expedition, so we won't state them. We confirm by VIN and in person before we commit to a method.
Is a smart key more expensive than an older bladed key?
Yes, lost-fob replacement costs more than it did with older bladed keys. The final cost depends on whether you have a working key, what tools or access the job needs, and the condition of the fob.
Do you come to me, or do I have to visit the shop?
Both work. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour, any day, and we'll sort out which makes sense for your situation.
