The 2003–2014 Expedition uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Ford Expedition key guide.

4D63 on H92-PT keys (fitment listings cover 2003-2017 Expedition); 40-bit-era trucks, with dual-mode 40/80-bit aftermarket chips covering them. Onboard add-a-key works with two working keys.
What kind of key does a 2003 Expedition use?
The 2003 Expedition uses a transponder key with a 4D63 chip family. It is a conventional key you put in the ignition and turn, with no push-button start. The chip is part of Ford's PATS anti-theft system. When you turn the key, the truck reads the chip, and if it does not recognize it, the engine may crank but will not run. The chip data for this year is verified against fitment sources, including uhs-hardware.com and ford-trucks.com.
Those sources list the H92-PT key for this truck, and the same key shows up in fitment listings that run from 2003 through 2017. This is a 40-bit-era Expedition. The dual-mode 40/80-bit aftermarket chips we can use cover it. The truck also has a mechanical backup key in the data, meaning the blade itself is cut to turn the locks and ignition even when the chip is the part that fails.
For you, this means a plain hardware-store copy will not do the job. The blade can look perfect, open the doors, and still leave you with a truck that will not start.
Duplicate or all keys lost: how we handle each
Both situations are possible on this truck. A duplicate is the easier of the two, and the second is still routine work for us.
- Confirm the truck. We check the year, model and key type, and we verify by VIN where it matters before cutting or buying a chip.
- Cut the blade. The Expedition uses an 8-cut key, so the blade has to be cut cleanly to the ignition and door lock code, not just roughly traced from a worn key.
- Program the chip through the OBD port. Programming on this truck is done through the OBD port, and the data does not call for NASTF SDRM access.
- Add keys if you have two working ones. The truck supports onboard add-a-key when two working keys are present, which can be the lighter-cost route for an extra spare.
- Test everything. We run the key in the ignition, start the truck, and try every lock before we call it finished.
What if I lost every key?
All keys lost is possible on a 2003 Expedition. We cut a new key to the lock, then program the chip to the truck. Duplication normally starts from an original key, so if you have none, the work is different: more steps and more time at the truck.
If you have one working key, do not wait until it is lost too. Getting a second key made while you still have one is usually the more economical route. You can learn more about our work on other trucks and SUVs at our Ford Expedition key page or across our Ford key service.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2003 Expedition key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because the job changes the price. These are the things that move it:
- Whether you have a working key. A duplicate from an original key is usually the more economical route compared with starting from nothing.
- Whether you already have two working keys. Onboard add-a-key can be an option, which may affect the work required.
- The condition of the lock. Worn ignition wafers or a worn 8-cut blade can mean more work than just making a key.
- Where the truck is. A shop visit at our Westwood storefront differs from a mobile visit to wherever the truck is parked.
- The key itself. A proper transponder key with the correct chip costs more than a blade-only copy, but only one of them starts the truck.
Common problems on this truck, and what we confirm by VIN
These are the problems the data lists for this year:
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage vehicles, where the key sticks or will not turn.
- Worn 8-cut key blades that stop turning the locks.
- A flashing PATS theft light, where the engine cranks but does not start because the chip is not read.
- Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder, which open the doors but will not start the engine.
Why call us for this
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You call one company, not a dispatcher who hands your job to someone you never spoke with. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
One note on what is not fully settled: the fitment listings for the H92-PT key cover a span of years, so we confirm by VIN and in person that the key and chip match your truck before we cut or program anything. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it. If you want to talk it through, contact us or call (213) 577-1366, answered 24 hours a day. For other makes, see our car key service.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 2003 Ford Expedition have a chip in the key?
Yes. It uses a transponder key with a 4D63 chip family, tied to Ford's PATS system. A key without a programmed chip may open the doors but will not start the engine.
Can you make a key if I lost all my keys?
Yes, all keys lost is possible on this truck. We cut a new key to the lock and program the chip through the OBD port. It is more involved than a duplicate, so it usually takes more time.
Is the 2003 Expedition push-to-start?
No. It uses a regular key you turn in the ignition.
Do you need a dealer to program a 2003 Expedition key?
No. For this year the programming method is through the OBD port, and the data does not call for NASTF SDRM access. We handle it ourselves.
Can I program a spare key myself?
The truck supports onboard add-a-key when you have two working keys. If you only have one or none, you will need a locksmith with programming equipment.
Why will my key not turn in the ignition?
On high-mileage Expeditions, the ignition lock wafers wear down, so the key sticks or will not turn. A worn 8-cut blade can cause the same problem. We can check which one it is before replacing anything.
What does a flashing PATS light mean?
It means the truck is not reading the chip in your key. The engine may crank but will not start. It can point to a key with no chip or one that is not programmed to the truck.
