The 2021–2023 Traverse uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Chevrolet Traverse key guide.

What kind of key does a 2021 Traverse use?
The 2021 Traverse comes with a smart-proximity key. You carry the fob in a pocket or bag, the vehicle senses it, and you start the engine with the push button. Nothing gets turned in an ignition. That is a different animal from an older bladed transponder key, and it changes what a replacement involves.
Inside the fob is a mechanical backup key, a thin emergency blade. It exists for one situation: the fob stops talking to the vehicle and you still need to get the door open. The blade opens the door, but it does not fix the underlying problem. The three problems we see on this fob are:
- A dead fob battery. The dash reports that no remote is detected, while the hidden blade still opens the door. Often this is a battery issue, not a failed fob, so check it before paying for a new one.
- A lost fob. Replacing a smart fob costs more than replacing an older bladed key, because the fob has to be programmed to your vehicle and not just cut.
- A water-damaged or crushed fob. Washing machines, pockets at the beach, and a fob dropped under a tire are the usual causes.
Duplicate a key or replace after all keys are lost?
These are two different jobs for this vehicle, and the difference matters for your budget and your afternoon.
If you still have a working fob, we can make an additional one. For this setup the original key needs to be present for duplication. Having one in hand is the lighter-cost route, because nothing has to be worked around.
If every fob is gone, a replacement is still possible. It is a bigger job than a duplicate, but you do not need to tow the Traverse to a dealer just to get started. Programming on this vehicle is done through the OBD port, and our data does not show a NASTF SDRM requirement for it.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and whether you have a working fob, a dead one, or none.
- We confirm the vehicle by VIN and check the FCC ID printed on any fob you still have.
- We supply a matching fob, and where needed the emergency blade is cut to fit your door lock.
- The new fob is programmed through the OBD port, then we test the door, the push-to-start, and the remote functions.
- If you had a working fob, we make sure it still behaves as expected, then hand everything back.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a Traverse key replacement?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your situation. Here is what moves the cost up or down:
- Duplicate versus all keys lost. Having an original fob present is usually the more economical route.
- The exact fob your vehicle needs. We match it from the FCC ID, and that has to be right before we order or program anything.
- How many fobs you want. Making two in one visit is often more efficient than coming back later.
- Whether the blade needs cutting, or only the fob needs programming.
- Where the vehicle is. Our mobile vans can come to you, and our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood is open to anyone who can bring the vehicle in.
- The condition of what you have. A fob that only needs a battery costs far less than one that has been through water.
What we have not verified about this year's fob
Here is the part many sites gloss over. The 2021 Traverse fob is from the HYQ4ES era, and parts catalogs list two different chip families for these years: 46E and NXP Hitag Pro ID49. Our data on this exact year is marked as conflicting, so we do not claim one over the other.
What we do instead is read the FCC ID on the fob and confirm the vehicle by VIN before quoting. If you are lost-fob with nothing to read, we confirm in person against the vehicle. Anyone who tells you the chip type over the phone without checking is guessing.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for this
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront in Westwood and mobile vans on the road. You reach one company, not a dispatch middleman who sells your job to whoever picks it up. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they touch your vehicle. For other Chevrolet models, see our Chevrolet key pages, or look at the general Traverse key page for other model years. If you would rather send details first, use our contact page.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a key for my 2021 Traverse if I lost every fob?
Yes, all-keys-lost replacement is possible for this setup. The fob is programmed through the OBD port. We confirm the vehicle by VIN and match the correct fob before we quote.
Do I need to bring my original fob?
For a duplicate, yes. The original key needs to be present. If you have no fob at all, that is a replacement job, which we can still do.
My dash says no remote detected. Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. A dead battery produces that message, and the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. Try a fresh battery first. If the message continues, call us and we will look at the fob.
Does this key have a chip, and which one?
It is a smart-proximity fob, but the chip family is not verified for this year. Catalogs list both 46E and NXP Hitag Pro ID49. We confirm from the FCC ID on the fob and the VIN instead of guessing.
Is there a metal key in the fob?
Yes. There is a hidden mechanical backup blade for the door lock. It is for emergencies, since the vehicle itself starts with the push button and the fob.
Can you come to me, or do I have to bring the Traverse in?
We run mobile vans and also have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out which makes sense for your situation. See our car key services for the wider picture.
