The 2021–2024 Tahoe uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Chevrolet Tahoe key guide.

What kind of key does a 2021 Tahoe use?
The 2021 Tahoe comes with a smart proximity key, the YG0G21TB2 fob. You carry it in a pocket or bag, the truck senses it, and you start the engine with the push button. There is no key to turn in the ignition.
Inside the fob is an ID49 transponder chip, from the NXP Hitag Pro/AES family. That is a encrypted chip, not the simple fixed-code kind found in older bladed keys. It is one reason a fob cannot be cut and copied like a house key. A new fob has to be introduced to the truck's computer before it will start the engine. The ID49 family is confirmed for this year from two independent reference sources.
The fob also carries a mechanical backup: a hidden emergency blade that slides out of the case. If the fob battery dies, that blade still opens the driver door by hand. It is an entry fallback, so keep track of where it is.

Is your fob actually lost, or just dead?
The most common 2021 Tahoe complaint is a dead fob battery. The dash shows a 'no remote detected' message even though the fob is in the truck. Before anyone orders a replacement, it is worth checking the battery, because that is the lighter-cost fix when it is the real problem.
The other two problems we see on this setup are water-damaged fobs and crushed fobs. A fob that went through a wash cycle or got run over in a parking lot often fails for reasons a battery will not solve. If it has been wet or flattened, plan on replacing it.
Replacing a lost smart fob costs more than replacing an older bladed key. That is the nature of this technology, not a quirk of one shop.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what's the difference?
For this Tahoe, a duplicate means you still have a working original fob. Having one in hand makes the job simpler. The original key is needed for a straightforward duplication, and we program the new fob to the truck through the OBD port.
All keys lost is possible on this truck too, but it is a bigger job. The electrical architecture on this generation may require GM server access, through ACDelco SPS2, with tooling that carries NASTF VSP credentials. Depending on the tool, some cases may have to go to a dealer. We do not know which route applies until we look at your specific vehicle, so we confirm it per job rather than promise one answer up front.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what you have: one working fob, a dead fob, or none.
- We ask for the VIN and confirm the vehicle is yours with registration and ID.
- We work out whether this is a duplicate or an all-keys-lost job, and which programming route applies.
- We come to you with a mobile van, or you can bring the truck to our Westwood storefront.
- The new fob is programmed through the OBD port, and we test starting and locking before we leave you.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2021 Tahoe key?
We do not quote numbers on a page, because the real price depends on your situation. These are the things that move it:
- Whether you have a working fob. A duplicate is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
- Whether the fob is just dead. A battery issue can cost far less than a new fob.
- The server access and tooling needed for an all-keys-lost job on this architecture.
- Whether the job can be done on site or the truck has to go to a dealer.
- Where the truck is parked and the time of day you call.
What we confirm by VIN, and why call us
The data we have for this year is solid on the fob, the chip family, and OBD programming. What is not fixed is the all-keys-lost path: whether it runs through GM server access with our tools or needs dealer service. We confirm that by VIN and in person, and we will tell you plainly if your truck is a dealer case.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. You deal with one company, not a dispatch middleman, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it.

Frequently asked questions
What key does a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe use?
It uses a smart proximity fob, the YG0G21TB2, with push-to-start. The chip is ID49 (NXP Hitag Pro/AES), and the fob has a hidden emergency blade.
My Tahoe says 'no remote detected'. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is the most common cause of that message, and the hidden emergency blade will still open the door. Check the battery first. If the fob has been wet or crushed, it may need replacing.
Can you make a key if I lost every fob?
Yes, all keys lost is possible on this truck. It may require GM server access through ACDelco SPS2 with NASTF VSP-credentialed tooling, or dealer service depending on the tool. We confirm the route per job by VIN.
Can a 2021 Tahoe fob be copied like a regular key?
No. The fob has an encrypted ID49 chip, and a new one has to be programmed to the truck through the OBD port. The original key is needed for a standard duplication.
How do you program the new fob?
Through the OBD port, the diagnostic connector in the vehicle. We can do this with our mobile vans or at our Westwood storefront, depending on your situation.
Why does replacing a smart fob cost more than an old bladed key?
Smart fobs contain encrypted electronics and must be programmed to the vehicle. An all-keys-lost job can also need server access and specialized tooling, which adds to the work.
