2007 Chevrolet Tahoe key replacement

The 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe uses a remote-head key with an ID46 transponder chip, not push-to-start. We can cut and program a replacement, even if every key is lost, using the OBD port. Call Wilshire Lock & Key at (213) 577-1366 any hour.

The 2007–2014 Tahoe uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Chevrolet Tahoe key guide.

GM's 30-minute (3x10-minute) onboard relearn covers all-keys-lost on most PK3+ vehicles without special tooling; OBD programming with a pro tool is faster.

What kind of key does a 2007 Tahoe use?

The 2007 Tahoe uses a remote-head key. The metal blade, the transponder chip and the remote are built into one head, and you turn the blade in the ignition. There is no push-to-start system on this year, so there is no proximity fob to deal with.

The chip is an ID46 transponder (GM calls the family PK3+, and you may see it written as Hitag2). Two separate references confirm that chip family for this year. The chip is why a blade cut at a hardware store opens the doors and then lets the engine crank but never fire. The truck checks the chip's code before it allows the engine to run, and an uncoded copy simply does not carry one.

This year also has a mechanical backup key, so the doors and ignition are fully serviceable by a locksmith. We do not have to take the vehicle apart to get started.

  • Key type: remote-head key with a built-in transponder
  • Push-to-start: no
  • Chip family: ID46 (PK3+, Hitag2)
  • Programming method: through the OBD port

Do you have a spare, or are all keys lost?

These are two different jobs, and the difference matters for both your time and your cost.

If you still have one working key, we can make a duplicate from it. For this Tahoe an original key is needed as the starting point for that duplicate. We cut the blade, program the chip and the remote, and test everything before you drive away. Having one good key in hand is the simplest situation this truck offers.

If every key is gone, replacement is still possible on a 2007 Tahoe. We cut a new blade from the lock or by code, then program the new key to the truck through the OBD port. You do not need to have the truck towed to a dealer for this year. The programming does not require NASTF SDRM secure-data access, which is often the hurdle on newer vehicles.

How we handle a 2007 Tahoe key replacement

Here is the usual order of work, whether we come to you in a mobile van or you bring the truck to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.

  1. Confirm the truck: we check the year and VIN so we cut and program the right key for your build.
  2. Check what you have: one working key, a worn key, a hardware-store copy, or nothing at all.
  3. Cut the blade and check how it turns in the ignition and door locks before any programming starts.
  4. Program the transponder and remote through the OBD port with a professional tool.
  5. Start the truck, test the remote functions and test every key you are leaving with.
  6. If you only have a long timed relearn available, we run GM's onboard procedure instead of a tool, which takes longer but works without special tooling on most PK3+ vehicles.

What affects the price of a 2007 Tahoe key?

We will not quote a number before we know your situation, and neither should anyone else. These are the things that actually move the cost:

  • Duplicate or all keys lost: starting from a working key is less work than creating a key from scratch.
  • Number of keys: a second key programmed in the same visit usually costs less than coming back for it later.
  • Where the truck is: a mobile visit and a drop-off at the storefront are set up differently.
  • Condition of the ignition: worn lock wafers on a high-mileage Tahoe can add work before a new key will turn smoothly.
  • Remote features: the remote portion of the key is part of the cost along with the blade and chip.
  • Time of day: a late-night call takes a different kind of staffing than a weekday daytime appointment.

Common 2007 Tahoe key problems, and what we confirm by VIN

Three problems come up on these trucks. First, worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage vehicles can make the key stick or fail to turn. Second, a worn key blade can stop turning the lock even though the chip inside it is perfectly fine. In that case, a fresh blade often fixes it, but if the ignition itself is worn, we will tell you that plainly. Third, a copy cut without a transponder will open the doors but will not start the truck.

Our data on this year's chip and programming method is verified. Still, trims and build changes can exist within a model year, so we confirm by VIN before cutting or programming anything, and we will tell you if anything about your particular truck looks different.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work starts. We have been in business since 1987 as one company, with David overseeing the work and no dispatch middlemen between you and the technician.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a 2007 Tahoe key if I lost every key?

Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on this year. We cut a new blade and program the key through the OBD port, and no special secure-data registration is required for this setup.

Why does my copied key open the doors but not start the Tahoe?

The 2007 Tahoe has an ID46 transponder chip in the key. A copy cut without a chip has no code for the truck to recognize, so the engine will not stay running.

Is the 2007 Tahoe push-to-start?

No. It uses a remote-head key that you turn in the ignition.

Do I need to bring my original key to get a duplicate?

Yes, a duplicate on this truck starts from an original key. If you have no key at all, we handle it as an all-keys-lost job instead.

My key is worn and barely turns. Do I need a new ignition?

Not always. A worn blade can stop turning the lock even when the chip still works, and a new blade may solve it. On high-mileage trucks the ignition wafers can also be worn, and we check that before recommending anything.

Do I have to go to the dealer for a 2007 Tahoe key?

No. For this year the programming can be done through the OBD port by a locksmith with the right tool, so a dealer visit is not required.

Do you come to me, or do I bring the truck in?

Either. We have mobile service vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will help you decide which makes more sense.
