The 2014–2021 Silverado uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Chevrolet Silverado key guide.

What kind of key does a 2014 Silverado use?
The 2014 Silverado uses a flip key, a remote head that folds the metal blade into the housing. Inside the plastic is a transponder chip from the 46E (Hitag2 Extended) family. The truck will not start unless it recognizes that chip, so a blade that only turns the ignition is not enough. Push-button start was not offered on this generation, so you are dealing with a real key and a real ignition cylinder.
The key is the B119-PT style flip key. There is also a mechanical backup key for this truck. That matters if the remote side has died, because the blade can still open the door and, if the chip is good, start the engine.
For a 2014 owner, this setup tends to fail in a few familiar ways:
- Cracked remote-head or flip-key shells, broken flip hinges and worn buttons
- Remote battery failure, which kills the lock and unlock buttons but does not always stop the truck from starting
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that work for a while and then fail intermittently
Duplicate key or all keys lost: how do they differ?
For this truck, making a duplicate requires an original working key. If you still have one, copying is the simpler path: we cut the blade, then program the new chip to the truck. Having a spare made before you lose the last one is usually the more economical route.
If you have lost every key, that is still doable on a 2014 Silverado. All-keys-lost is possible for this setup. It takes more steps because there is no working key to start from, and the truck has to be taught the new key from scratch.
Programming is done through the OBD port under the dash. For this model year, the NASTF secure-data registry is not required, which keeps the job from being held up by outside paperwork. Here is how an all-keys-lost job generally runs:
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model and where the truck is parked.
- We confirm the truck by VIN and ask for proof that it is yours.
- We cut a new blade, using the ignition or door lock as a guide if no key exists.
- We connect to the OBD port and program the 46E chip so the truck accepts it.
- We test the key in the ignition, the door and the remote functions before we leave.
What affects the price of a 2014 Silverado key?
We do not quote a number without knowing your situation, and you should be wary of anyone who does. These are the things that actually move the cost on this truck:
- Whether you have a working key to copy or all keys are lost, since lost-key jobs take more labor
- How many keys you want made, because setting up the programming session once and adding a second key is usually lighter than coming back later
- The condition of your current key: sometimes only a shell is needed, not a whole new key
- The quality of the chip and remote, since a cheap clone that fails intermittently can cost you twice
- Whether we come to you with a mobile van or you bring the truck to our Westwood storefront
- Whether the job is during regular hours or in the middle of the night
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What do we confirm by VIN before cutting anything?
The data for this year is verified, including the 46E chip family. Even so, we do not cut and program on the strength of a year and model alone. Silverado remotes and shells can look nearly identical and still be the wrong part, so we match your VIN and the key itself before anything is cut or programmed.
If a key you bring in turns out to be a poor-quality clone, we will say so plainly. It may still be worth replacing the chip rather than fighting intermittent starting problems.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for this?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles, CA 90024, plus mobile service vans that cover 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You get one company, not a dispatch middleman passing your call to whoever picks it up. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith you call for it. That is a fair question and we are glad to answer questions like it.
Phones are answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year, at (213) 577-1366. If you would rather write, use our contact page and tell us the year, the key situation and where the truck is.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 2014 Silverado have push-button start?
No. Push-button start was not offered on this generation. The truck uses a flip key with a 46E (Hitag2 Extended) transponder chip.
Can you make a key if I lost all of mine?
Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on this setup. We confirm the VIN and your ownership, cut a blade, and program the chip through the OBD port.
Do you need my original key to make a copy?
For a duplicate on this truck, yes, an original key is needed. If you do not have one, the job becomes an all-keys-lost service instead.
Is dealer-only programming required for this truck?
Not according to our verified data for this year. Programming is done through the OBD port and the NASTF secure-data registry is not required. We still confirm by VIN before we start.
My remote buttons stopped working but the truck still starts. What now?
The cause is often a dead remote battery, a worn button or a cracked shell. Try a battery first. If the shell or hinge is broken, the parts can often be moved into a new housing or the key replaced.
Can you come to me, or do I need to tow the truck?
We run mobile service vans and also have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out which fits your situation, usually without a tow.
Why does my aftermarket key start the truck only some of the time?
Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips are a known problem on this generation and can fail intermittently. Replacing the chip with a properly programmed one usually fixes it.
