The 2000–2006 Silverado uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Chevrolet Silverado key guide.
2000 Chevrolet Silverado: key facts
- Key type
- Mechanical (no chip)
- Push-to-start
- No
- Transponder chip
- none (Passlock — no chip in key)
- Programming
- NONE
- All keys lost
- We can originate new keys on site
Passlock: the security sensor lives in the ignition lock cylinder, not the key — a correctly cut key starts the vehicle with no programming. Security-light no-starts usually mean a failed Passlock sensor, and a 30-minute (3x10-minute) relearn is required after ignition-cylinder or BCM replacement.
What kind of key does a 2000 Silverado use?
The 2000 Silverado has a plain mechanical key. There is no transponder chip in the plastic head, and it is not a push-to-start truck. The anti-theft system is called Passlock, and the security sensor lives in the ignition lock cylinder, not in the key.
For you, that means the key only has to be cut correctly. If the blade turns the ignition and the locks, the truck starts. Nothing has to be paired with the computer, and no special programming tool or manufacturer security access is required for a new key.
It also means a replacement is a much simpler job than on many later trucks. You are paying for accurate key cutting and a technician who comes to you, not for electronics.
Spare key or all keys lost: how does it differ on this truck?
On this setup the two situations are close to the same job. You do not need an original key in hand to get a duplicate made, and losing every key is still something we can solve. We do not need to reprogram anything afterward.
- Duplicate: we cut a new key to match. Having a working key makes it quicker, but it is not required.
- All keys lost: we can make a working key for the truck on site, whether it is parked at home, at work, or on the street.
- Either way: no chip to program, so the new key works once it is cut correctly.
- Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and where the truck is.
- We confirm the key setup against your VIN or by looking at the truck in person.
- We cut the key and test it in the ignition, the doors, and any other lock it must operate.
- You leave with a key that turns everything and starts the truck.
When a new key does not fix the problem
Many calls on these trucks are not really about the key. The data on this year points to three common problems, and only one is solved by cutting a key.
The Passlock sensor in the ignition cylinder can fail. The usual signs are a security light that stays on and an engine that starts and then dies, even with a perfectly good key. A new key will not cure that, and we would rather tell you so than cut one you do not need.
If the sensor or ignition cylinder is replaced, or the body control module is replaced, the truck needs a relearn procedure. For this year that is a 30-minute cycle, run as three 10-minute periods. It is a timed procedure, not a rush job, so plan for the truck to sit while it runs.
The other two problems are wear. High-mileage trucks can have worn ignition wafers, so the key sticks or will not turn. And an old key blade can wear down until it no longer turns the locks. Sometimes a fresh, accurately cut key is enough; sometimes the cylinder is the real culprit. We check which before recommending anything.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a 2000 Silverado key?
Because there is no chip or programming on this truck, the cost is usually on the more economical side of the key world. What moves the price is not electronics but circumstances.
The main factors are below. We explain them on the phone so there is no surprise when we arrive.
- Whether you need a spare or every key replaced, since all keys lost can mean more hands-on work.
- Whether the ignition or a door lock is worn and needs repair or replacement, not just a new key.
- Whether the problem is a failed Passlock sensor, which involves the ignition cylinder and the relearn procedure.
- Where the truck is and what hour you call, since we run mobile vans around the clock.
- How many keys you want cut at once.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans that serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You reach one company, not a dispatch middleman, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for that number before they start. Our license number is being added to this site.
One honest note: the data we hold for this year is verified, but trims and later changes to a specific truck can vary, so we confirm against the VIN or in person before cutting. If something about your truck does not match what we describe here, we will tell you plainly.
For other model years, see the Silverado key guide, the wider Chevrolet key page, or all car key services. To get started, use our contact page or call (213) 577-1366.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 2000 Silverado key have a chip?
No. It is a mechanical key with no transponder chip. Passlock security uses a sensor in the ignition lock cylinder, so the key does not need to be programmed.
Can you make a key if I lost all of mine?
Yes. All keys lost is possible on this truck, and an original key is not needed. We confirm the setup by VIN or in person, then cut a key that works.
Does the new key need programming?
No. A correctly cut key starts the truck with no programming. Programming is only a concern on later vehicles with chips, which this year does not have.
My security light is on and the truck starts then dies. Is it the key?
Usually not. On this truck that pattern most often points to a failed Passlock sensor in the ignition cylinder, even when the key is good. We would diagnose it before cutting anything.
What is the relearn procedure after replacing the ignition cylinder?
After an ignition cylinder or body control module replacement, this year needs a 30-minute relearn, run as three 10-minute cycles. The truck has to stay put while it completes.
My key sticks or will not turn. Do I need a new key?
Maybe. Worn ignition wafers on high-mileage trucks and worn key blades are both common here. We check whether the key or the lock is worn, then fix the right part.
Do I need to go to a dealer?
For this year's data, no dealer-only step applies to key cutting. We confirm by VIN or in person, and we will say so honestly if your truck turns out to be an exception.
