2021 Chevrolet Malibu key replacement

A 2021 Chevrolet Malibu uses a push-button smart key, and this is a split year: two fob versions exist, so we check the FCC ID on your fob before anything else. We can replace one, even with all keys lost. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour.

  • Westwood storefront + mobile vans

The 2021–2025 Malibu uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Chevrolet Malibu key guide.

2021 is a documented split year: the HYQ4EA fob (46E family) is cataloged through 2021, while the newer HYQ4ES fob (NXP Hitag Pro ID49) is also cataloged from 2021 — we confirm from the FCC ID on the fob before quoting. Push-button start standard.

What kind of key does a 2021 Malibu use?

The 2021 Malibu has push-button start and a smart proximity key. The car senses the fob in your pocket or bag, unlocks the doors, and lets you start the engine without putting anything in a slot. It is not a bladed key you turn in an ignition, so a hardware-store copy will not work.

Every fob also hides a mechanical emergency blade. If the fob battery dies, you can still open the driver's door with that blade. That matters because a dead fob is one of the most common 2021 Malibu complaints we see described: the dash shows a 'no remote detected' message, the car will not recognize the fob, and the owner assumes the key has failed for good. Often it is only the battery, and the fob is fine.

The other problems that come up with this setup are water-damaged fobs, crushed fobs, and the plain fact that replacing a lost smart fob costs more than replacing an older bladed key.

Why is 2021 a split year, and what do we do about it?

Here is the honest part. 2021 is a documented split year for this car. One fob, the HYQ4EA, which is cataloged in the 46E chip family, is listed through 2021. A newer fob, the HYQ4ES, which uses an NXP Hitag Pro ID49 chip, is also listed starting in 2021. Our records for this year conflict, and the chip family for the car itself is not verified.

So we do not guess from the model year alone. We read the FCC ID printed on your existing fob, or confirm by VIN and by looking at the car in person when every fob is gone. Only then do we quote and cut or order the right part. Buying a fob online based on the year alone is the most common way people end up with one that will not program.

Duplicate a key or replace after losing all of them?

Both are possible on this setup, and they are different jobs.

  • Spare or duplicate: you still have a working fob. The original key is needed for this route, and it is generally the more economical one because the car already has a working key to work from.
  • All keys lost: also possible. Programming on this car is done through the OBD port, and our data shows no NASTF SDRM access is required for the method. Without a working fob the job takes more steps, which is reflected in the cost.
  • Dead battery only: if the fob still opens the door with the emergency blade and the dash says 'no remote detected', try a fresh battery before you pay for a new fob.

How we handle a 2021 Malibu fob replacement

Whether we come to you with a mobile van or you drive to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, the process is the same.

  1. Confirm the car and your ownership. We verify the VIN and that the vehicle is yours.
  2. Identify the fob. We check the FCC ID on your existing fob if you have one, so we know whether it is the HYQ4EA or the HYQ4ES version.
  3. Get the right fob and blade. The emergency blade is cut to match the car.
  4. Program through the OBD port, so the car recognizes the new fob.
  5. Test everything: door unlock, push-button start, and the emergency blade. If you have any other fobs, we test those too.

What affects the price?

We do not quote a number without knowing which fob your car takes, and we will not make one up on this page. These are the factors that actually move the cost:

  • Which fob version your Malibu needs, which depends on the split-year question above.
  • Whether you have a working fob to copy or all keys are lost.
  • How many fobs you want programmed in one visit.
  • Whether we come to you or you come to the storefront.
  • Whether an existing fob is damaged by water or crushing and needs replacing rather than a simple battery change.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key

We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We have a storefront and mobile vans, and you deal with one company, not a dispatch service that hands your call to whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for theirs before work begins. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day: (213) 577-1366. Frequently asked questions

Does the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu have a regular key?

No. It uses a push-button smart key. There is a hidden mechanical emergency blade inside the fob that opens the driver's door if the battery is dead, but you start the car with the fob inside it and the start button.

Why does my Malibu say 'no remote detected'?

The most common cause is a dead fob battery. Open the door with the emergency blade and try a fresh battery first. If the message continues, the fob may be damaged by water or by being crushed, and it may need replacing.

Can you make a key if I lost all of them?

Yes. All-keys-lost replacement is possible on this setup, and programming is done through the OBD port. It involves more steps than adding a spare, so the cost is higher.

Which fob does my 2021 Malibu take?

It depends. 2021 is a split year with two cataloged fob versions, the HYQ4EA and the HYQ4ES. We confirm from the FCC ID on your fob, or by VIN and in-person inspection if you have no fob, before we quote.

Do I need the original key to make a copy?

For a duplicate, yes, the original key is needed. If you do not have one, the job becomes an all-keys-lost replacement instead.

Do you come to me, or do I come to you?

Either. We have mobile vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will tell you which makes more sense for your situation.

Can you give me a price over the phone?

We can explain what drives the cost, but we will not give a number before we know which fob your Malibu takes and whether you have a working key. See our car keys overview for how we approach vehicle key work.
