The 2022–2024 Equinox uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Chevrolet Equinox key guide.

- Push-to-start
- Yes
- Transponder chip
- Varies by trim — we confirm by VIN

Catalogs split: transpondery.com lists NXP Hitag Pro ID49 from 2022, while other sources continue the 46E HYQ4AA fob — we confirm from the FCC ID on the fob. The separate 2024+ Equinox EV uses a newer system not covered here.
What kind of key does a 2022 Equinox use, and what does that mean for you?
The 2022 Equinox comes with a smart proximity key. You keep the fob in a pocket or bag, the car senses it, and you start the engine with the push-button. There is no ignition cylinder to turn, so the fob has to be recognized electronically by the car before it will start.
Inside every one of these fobs is a mechanical backup key. It slides out of the fob and opens the driver door if the fob stops working. That matters because the most common complaint on this model is a dead fob battery. When that happens, the dash typically reports that no remote is detected, but the emergency blade still opens the door. The battery is often the whole problem, so check it before assuming the fob is lost or broken.
- Dead fob battery: the dash says no remote detected, yet the hidden blade still opens the door.
- Water-damaged or crushed fobs: these usually need replacement, not a battery swap.
- Lost fob: replacing a smart key costs more than replacing an older bladed key, which is why people are often surprised by the quote.
Duplicate a key or replace after losing every key?
For this setup, both situations are possible, and they are different jobs. If you still have one working key, we can make an additional one. A duplicate needs an existing key present, so this is the easier and usually more economical route. Do it before the last key goes missing.
If every key is gone, we can still make a new one. Programming on this model is done through the OBD port under the dashboard. Our data shows no NASTF SDRM secure-data access is required for this year, which keeps the process on our side without a dealer detour. It does mean we work on the car itself, so we come to you with a mobile van or you can bring the Equinox to our Westwood storefront.
How we handle a 2022 Equinox key job
The steps depend on whether you have a key left, but the order is usually the same.
- You call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers at any hour, every day of the year.
- We ask whether you have any working fob, whether the emergency blade still works, and where the car is.
- We check the fob's FCC ID, or the car's VIN if the fob is gone, so the replacement matches.
- We cut or confirm the emergency blade as needed and program the fob through the OBD port.
- We test that the doors, remote functions, and push-to-start all recognize the new fob before we finish.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because the job changes with the situation. The main factors are whether you need a duplicate or an all-keys-lost replacement, since the second involves more programming work. The fob itself is a large part of the cost, because smart keys are priced well above old bladed keys. Whether the fob is a genuine or aftermarket unit also matters, and so does where the car is parked, because a mobile call differs from a drive-in visit to the shop.
If the real problem is a dead battery, the fix is much lighter than a replacement. Say so when you call, and we will tell you honestly if a battery is all you need.
What we have not verified for this year
The transponder chip for the 2022 Equinox is not settled in our data. Parts catalogs disagree: one lists an NXP Hitag Pro ID49 system starting in 2022, while other sources continue using the earlier 46E fob, the HYQ4AA. We will not guess. We confirm which fob your car needs from the FCC ID printed on the fob or from the VIN, and if the fob is missing we check in person before ordering anything.
Also note that the 2024 and newer Equinox EV uses a different, newer system. This page does not cover it. If you drive that model, see our Chevrolet key pages or call us.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans for roadside and driveway calls. You deal with one company, not a dispatch service that sells your call to someone else. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start. For other Equinox years, see the Equinox key guide. For other makes, see our car key service overview, or use the contact page if you prefer to write.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a 2022 Equinox key if I lost all of them?
Yes. All-keys-lost replacement is possible for this setup, and programming is done through the OBD port. We confirm the right fob from the VIN or in person before we start.
Do I need my original key to get a copy?
For a duplicate, yes, an existing key needs to be present. If you have none left, the job becomes an all-keys-lost replacement instead.
My dash says no remote detected. Is my key broken?
Often it is just a dead fob battery. The hidden emergency blade should still open the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob may be damaged and need replacement.
Does the 2022 Equinox use a transponder chip?
It is a smart proximity key, so the car does electronically verify the fob. But the exact chip family is unverified in our data because catalogs conflict, so we confirm from the FCC ID on the fob or the VIN.
Will I have to go to the dealer?
Our data shows no NASTF SDRM requirement for this year and programming by OBD, so a dealer visit is not part of the normal process. If your VIN shows something different, we will tell you plainly.
Why is a smart key more expensive than an older key?
The fob contains electronics and must be programmed to the car, while an older bladed key is mostly metal. Whether you need a duplicate or an all-keys-lost replacement also changes the cost.
Does this page cover the Equinox EV?
No. The 2024 and newer Equinox EV uses a newer system that is not covered here. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will check your exact vehicle.
