The 2018–2021 Equinox uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Chevrolet Equinox key guide.

What key does the 2018 Equinox use, and what does that mean for you?
The 2018 Equinox came with a smart proximity key, the kind you leave in your pocket or purse. The car senses the fob, you press the button, and the engine starts. Inside the fob is a transponder chip in the 46E (Hitag2 Extended) family, and that chip is verified for this model year. The fob belongs to the HYQ4AA family of proximity fobs, and keyless start is standard on this year.
Two things follow from that. First, this is not a key you can have cut at a hardware counter. A fob that is not programmed to the vehicle will not start it, no matter what its case looks like. Second, a replacement is a programming job as well as a parts job, so it costs more than the older bladed keys many owners remember.
There is also a mechanical backup. Every one of these fobs hides an emergency blade, so a dead fob does not have to leave you locked out.
Dead battery or truly lost fob?
The most common complaint on this year is a fob that quits working. When the battery runs down, the dash reports that no remote is detected, even though the fob is right there with you. Before you assume the fob is gone, check whether the blade still opens the door. On this Equinox it should.
Water-damaged and crushed fobs are the other regular cases. A fob that went through the wash or got sat on in a back pocket may still look fine and be dead inside. If a new battery does not bring it back, the fob itself needs replacing and programming.
- Dash says no remote detected: often the fob battery, and the hidden blade still opens the door.
- Fob dropped in water or run through a wash: may need full replacement.
- Cracked or crushed fob: the electronics are often damaged even if the buttons still click.
- Fob gone entirely: this is a lost-key situation, covered below.
Duplicate or all keys lost: how each works on this Equinox
If you still have a working fob, making another is the simpler route. For this setup the original key is needed to duplicate, so bring it, or have it with you when we arrive. We program the new fob to the vehicle and test that it starts the car and works the doors.
If every fob is gone, replacement is still possible. All-keys-lost is verified as doable for the 2018 Equinox. It takes more steps, because there is no existing key for the car to learn from, so expect the job to run longer and cost more than a straight duplicate.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366How we handle a 2018 Equinox fob replacement
Programming on this year is done through the OBD port, the diagnostic connector under the dash. For this year, programming does not require NASTF SDRM access. That means a locksmith with the right equipment can do the work at your car rather than a dealer service bay.
Our work is done by Wilshire Lock & Key technicians under David's oversight, in our own vans and at our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood.
- Call (213) 577-1366. We answer 24 hours a day and ask for your location and the vehicle's VIN.
- Confirm ownership. We will ask for ID and proof the Equinox is yours before we make a key.
- Check the fob situation: dead battery, damaged fob, one working fob, or no fob at all.
- Prepare a new proximity fob matching your vehicle.
- Program it through the OBD port and remove any lost fob from use where that applies.
- Test everything: push-button start, door locks, and the emergency blade.
What affects the price, and one honest note on verification
We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the real cost depends on your situation. The main factors are whether you need a duplicate or an all-keys-lost replacement, the fob itself, whether the car can come to us or we travel to it, and the hour of the call. A smart key costs more than a bladed key, so owners coming from older cars may be surprised. If the real problem is only a worn-out fob battery, the fix is usually the more economical route.
On honesty about data: the chip family and programming method above are verified for the 2018 Equinox, but individual cars can differ, and we do not guess. We confirm by VIN, and in person if necessary, before we order or program anything. If a particular car turns out to need something we cannot do on site, we will say so plainly.
Whoever you hire, ask for their California BSIS LCO locksmith company license number. State law requires locksmith companies to hold one, and a legitimate shop will give it to you without fuss.

Frequently asked questions
What type of key does a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox use?
A smart proximity fob with push-button start. It holds a 46E (Hitag2 Extended) transponder chip and has a hidden emergency blade.
My Equinox says no remote detected. Is the fob broken?
Often the fob battery is dead. The hidden emergency blade should still open the door. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may be water-damaged or crushed.
Can you make a key if I lost every fob?
Yes. All-keys-lost replacement is possible for this year. It takes longer and costs more than duplicating from a working fob.
Do I need my original fob to get a duplicate?
Yes. For this setup, the original key is needed to duplicate. If you have none, we handle it as all keys lost.
Do you need a dealer to program the new fob?
No. Programming is done through the OBD port, and this year does not require NASTF SDRM access. We confirm by VIN first.
Why is a smart key costlier than an older key?
It contains electronics and must be programmed to your Equinox, so replacement is a parts-and-programming job, not simple key cutting.
