2007 Chevrolet Equinox key replacement

A 2007 Equinox uses an ID46 transponder key with a circle-plus (PK3+) head, not push-to-start. We can cut and program a replacement by OBD, even if every key is lost, and a hardware-store copy without the chip will open the doors but won't start the engine. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour.

The 2007–2009 Equinox uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Chevrolet Equinox key guide.

B111-PT circle-plus key. GM's 30-minute (3x10-minute) onboard relearn covers all-keys-lost on most PK3+ vehicles without special tooling; OBD programming with a pro tool is faster.

What kind of key does a 2007 Equinox use?

The 2007 Equinox uses a transponder key, not a push-to-start fob. The chip inside the plastic head is an ID46 (Hitag2) in GM's PK3+ circle-plus style. The key is commonly listed as a B111-PT. When you turn it in the ignition, the car reads the chip, and the engine will only run if the code matches what the vehicle has stored.

That is why a plain metal copy from a hardware store causes so much grief on this model. The blade can be cut well enough to unlock the doors and even turn the ignition lock, but with no programmed chip the engine will not start. People often assume the copy is bad, when it was never a complete key in the first place.

The key also has a mechanical side. Two wear problems come up on these trucks. On a high-mileage Equinox the ignition lock wafers wear down. A worn key blade can also stop turning the lock even though the chip inside is still perfectly good. In both cases the electronics are fine and the problem is the metal, so the fix is a fresh cut or a look at the ignition cylinder, not necessarily a new chip.

Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?

For this setup, both situations are workable. Making a duplicate is the more straightforward job, because we start with one of your existing keys. An original key is needed for duplication, so if you still have one working key, make the spare now rather than after the second key disappears.

If you have lost every key, we can still get you running. All-keys-lost programming is possible on this vehicle, and it does not require special manufacturer-level access, so you are not forced to tow the Equinox to a dealer. We cut a new key to the vehicle, then program it to the car.

  • One key in hand: we copy and program a spare, and we can check the blade for wear at the same time.
  • No keys: we cut a key from the vehicle, then program the chip to the car.
  • Key works in the doors but car won't start: usually the chip is missing or was never programmed.
  • Key is sloppy or sticks in the ignition: worn blade or worn wafers, which is a mechanical fix.

How we handle a 2007 Equinox key job

The programming here is done through the OBD port under the dash. With a professional programming tool the process is fast. GM also has an onboard relearn that works without special tooling on most PK3+ vehicles, and it runs as a timed, three-cycle procedure. It is the fallback when it applies, but the tool route is quicker.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model and whether you have any working key. We answer around the clock.
  2. We come to you with a mobile van, or you bring the Equinox to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
  3. We confirm the vehicle and the key type, then cut the blade to your original key or to the vehicle if all keys are lost.
  4. We program the ID46 chip through the OBD port.
  5. We test every key you have: doors, ignition and engine start, before we call the job done.

What affects the price of a 2007 Equinox key?

We don't quote numbers on a web page because the real answer depends on your situation. These are the things that move the cost:

  • Duplicate or all keys lost. Copying from a working key is generally the lighter-cost route, since there is less to do.
  • How many keys you need cut and programmed in one visit.
  • Whether the job comes to us at the storefront or we travel to you, and how far.
  • The condition of the lock. If the ignition wafers are worn, that is separate work from the key itself.
  • Time of day. Calling at 3 a.m. is a different call than a weekday visit.
  • Whether you need an extra mechanical key blade cut alongside the transponder key.

What we confirm in person, and who you're dealing with

The chip data for this year is verified, but the GM relearn is described as covering all-keys-lost on most PK3+ vehicles, not every one. So we confirm your specific Equinox by VIN, or in person, before settling on the procedure. Trim and build details can differ, and we would rather check than guess.

You are dealing with one company, not a dispatch service that hands your call to whoever is free. Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a Westwood storefront and mobile vans serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

One more tip: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you call for that number. Frequently asked questions

Does a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox have a chip in the key?

Yes. It uses an ID46 (Hitag2) transponder chip in a PK3+ circle-plus key. Without a programmed chip, the engine will not start.

Why does my hardware-store copy open the doors but not start the Equinox?

The copy was cut as a plain metal key, with no transponder chip programmed to the vehicle. It can turn the locks, but the car won't allow the engine to run.

Can you make a key if I lost all my 2007 Equinox keys?

Yes. All-keys-lost programming is possible on this vehicle. We cut a key to the vehicle and program it through the OBD port. We confirm your Equinox by VIN or in person first.

Do I need to bring my original key to get a copy?

For a duplicate, yes, an original key is needed. If you have no key at all, that is an all-keys-lost job, which we can also do.

Does this Equinox have push-to-start?

No. The 2007 Equinox uses a turn-key ignition with a transponder key, not a push-button start.

My key is worn and barely turns the ignition. Do I need a new chip?

Not necessarily. A worn blade can stop turning the lock while the chip still works, and high-mileage ignitions can have worn wafers. We look at both the key and the ignition lock.

Do I have to take the Equinox to a dealer?

No. For this setup, the programming does not require special manufacturer-level access, so we handle it with our mobile vans or at our Westwood storefront.

How do I get a key made for my Equinox today?

Call (213) 577-1366. We answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tell us the year, model and whether you have a working key.
