The 2004–2012 Colorado uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Chevrolet Colorado key guide.
2008 Chevrolet Colorado: key facts
- Key type
- Mechanical (no chip)
- Push-to-start
- No
- Transponder chip
- None
- Programming
- NONE
- All keys lost
- We can originate new keys on site
Locksmith field reports (including documented 2010 jobs) say these trucks are still chipless Passlock — cut by code, no programming — but transpondery.com lists a Megamos crypto chip for 2008-2012. Field evidence points to Passlock; we verify on the truck. Passlock: the security sensor lives in the ignition lock cylinder, not the key — a correctly cut key starts the vehicle with no programming. Security-light no-starts usually mean a failed Passlock sensor, and a 30-minute (3x10-minute) relearn is required after ignition-cylinder or BCM replacement.
Same key system as the 2004–2012 Colorado
Chevrolet kept the Colorado's key system unchanged across 2004–2012, so everything about replacing a 2008 key — blanks, programming, and what happens if every key is lost — matches the rest of that run. The full year-by-year breakdown lives in our Chevrolet Colorado key guide.
What drives the price is the key type, whether you still have a working key, and where the car is parked. There's more on Chevrolet programming in general on our Chevrolet key page.
