The 2019–2026 X5 uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the BMW X5 key guide.

G-chassis BDC2 car: add-a-key is possible for specialists with a working key (Autel BDC02 licenses; Xhorse's BDC2 bench adapter explicitly cannot do all-keys-lost). True all-keys-lost is dealer territory on these cars — the one advertised aftermarket AKL route (Yanhua ACDP) carries the vendor's own warning that it locks the BDC2 against future dealer keys, so we do not offer it.
What kind of key does a 2019 BMW X5 use?
The 2019 X5 does not have a blade you turn in an ignition. It comes with a smart-proximity fob and a push-to-start button, so the car reads the key while it is in your pocket or bag. Inside the fob is an ID49 transponder chip (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro family). That chip is verified for this model year from hardware documentation, not assumed from a neighboring year.
For an owner, that has a few practical meanings. The fob is a small electronic device that has to be paired to the car, so a new one cannot simply be cut and handed over. There is also a mechanical backup key inside the fob, which opens the door if the fob battery dies or the car cannot read the fob. Keep track of it. People forget it exists until the day they need it.
These are the problems we see listed most often for this setup:
- A dead coin cell in the fob, which shows up as a "key not detected" warning on the dash.
- Trouble enrolling or using BMW Digital Key (phone or card) on cars that are equipped with it.
- Lost-fob replacement that is expensive and usually runs through the dealer.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what is actually possible?
Our data for this year is clear on one point: an original key is needed to make a duplicate. The 2019 X5 is a G-chassis car with a BDC2 body control module. With one working key in hand, a specialist with the right programming tools and licenses can add another key through the OBD port. That is the route we can take, and it is usually the more economical one.
True all-keys-lost is different, and we will be straight about it. On these cars it is dealer territory. There is one aftermarket method advertised for it, but the vendor's own warning says it locks the BDC2 module against future dealer keys. That is a bad trade for an owner who may need the dealer later, so we do not offer it. We would rather tell you to go to the dealer than leave your car in a worse state.
The practical advice: if you have only one working fob, treat that as the time to add a spare. Once the last key is gone, your options narrow quickly and the cost goes up.
How we handle a 2019 X5 key job
The steps below are how a typical add-a-key job goes. We adjust them once we have your VIN and know what keys you have.
- Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us how many working fobs you have, including whether the backup key is accounted for.
- Give us the VIN so we can confirm what applies to your exact car rather than relying on a general chart.
- If you have at least one working key, we set a time at our Westwood storefront or come to you with a mobile van.
- We connect to the car through the OBD port and add the new fob using that working key.
- We test push-to-start, the doors, and the "key not detected" warning before we call the job finished.
- If it turns out no working key exists, we say so up front and point you to the dealer instead of guessing.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2019 X5 key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real figure depends on your situation. These are the things that move it:
- Whether you have a working key. Add-a-key and dealer-only recovery are very different jobs.
- The fob itself. This is an electronic part, and its source and availability affect cost.
- How many keys you want added. A second spare is usually a smaller step once we are connected to the car.
- The programming tools and licenses needed for a BDC2 car, which are specialist items.
- Digital Key. If your X5 is equipped and you want it set up, that can add time and complications.
- Where and when. Coming to your location, or after-hours service, is a different job from a visit to the shop.
- A simple dead battery. If the fob works but the coin cell is weak, you may not need a new key at all.
What we confirm by VIN
Our data lists OBD as the programming method for this year. What it does not settle is whether any additional manufacturer security access is required for your specific car, and we will not claim it either way. We confirm that by VIN and in person before we start. Digital Key behavior also varies with how the car was equipped, so we check that rather than promise it.
If you want to see the whole picture first, the BMW X5 key overview and the BMW key page cover the model range. For other makes, start at car keys. If you would rather talk it through, use our contact page or call. We have been in business since 1987, and David oversees the work. You deal with one company, not a dispatch service that hands you off to someone else.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a new 2019 BMW X5 key if I lost all of them?
No. On this G-chassis BDC2 car, true all-keys-lost is dealer territory, and we do not offer it. The one aftermarket route we know of carries a vendor warning that it locks the module against future dealer keys. If you have one working key, we can add another.
Do you need my original key to copy it?
Yes. For this year, an original key is needed to duplicate. We use it to add a new fob through the OBD port.
My X5 says key not detected. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. A dead coin cell in the fob is a common cause. Try the fob battery first. If the warning continues, call us and we can check whether the fob itself is the problem.
What chip does the 2019 X5 key use?
The verified chip is ID49 (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro). It sits inside a smart-proximity fob used with push-to-start.
Is there a physical key hidden in the fob?
Yes. The 2019 X5 fob has a mechanical backup key for the door lock. It gets you into the car if the fob battery is dead, but starting the car relies on the fob being read.
Can you set up BMW Digital Key on my phone?
Enrollment problems with Digital Key are a known issue on equipped cars. We confirm what your X5 supports by VIN before saying whether we can help, rather than promising it.
Will you come to me, or do I have to bring the car?
We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out which fits your situation.
