The 2007–2013 X5 uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the BMW X5 key guide.

CAS slot-key car: the fob inserts into a dash slot and the Start button fires the car (hands-free Comfort Access was optional). Add-a-key and all-keys-lost are documented OBD procedures for E-series CAS3/CAS3+ (e.g., Abrites BN014/BN016); late CAS3+ 'ISTAP' firmware can require a flash downgrade first — specialist, not dealer-only. Chip family confirmed from European-market E70 key listings (868 MHz); US-market fobs are 315 MHz versions of the same ID46 family.
What kind of key does a 2007 X5 use?
The 2007 X5 is a CAS slot-key car. The fob is a rechargeable smart key. You push it into a slot in the dash, then press the Start button to fire the engine. Hands-free Comfort Access, where the car recognizes the fob in your pocket, was an optional extra on these. So your X5 may or may not have it, and the key still works the same way in the slot either way.
Inside the fob is an ID46 transponder chip (PCF7945, Hitag2 family). That chip has to be paired with your car's CAS module before the car will start. A key cut to fit the lock but never programmed will not start the engine. The fob also holds a mechanical backup key, which opens the door if the fob battery is flat or the remote stops working.
One practical point: the fob battery is rechargeable and wears out. A weak battery usually kills the remote buttons first. Because the dash slot reads the fob directly, the car often still starts. If your X5 starts but the remote has gone quiet, you may not need a new key at all.
Spare key or all keys lost: what changes?
For this setup, you do not need an original key to have a new one made. Adding a key is done over the OBD port, which means we connect to the car and program the new fob into the CAS. It is a documented procedure for this generation of BMW.
All keys lost is also possible. It takes more work than a spare, because there is no working key to lean on, and the car has to be accepted for programming from scratch. It is a specialist job, but not a dealer-only one. We do not need a dealer tow or a dealer order to make it happen.
If you still have one working key, copy it now. Adding a spare while you hold a good key is the lighter-cost route and avoids the all-keys-lost scenario altogether.
- One working key: add-a-key over OBD, no original required for the new fob.
- No working keys: all-keys-lost programming is possible on this model.
- Remote dead but car starts: check the fob battery and shell first.
How we handle a 2007 X5 key job
Here is how a typical job goes, whether we come to you in a mobile van or you bring the car to our Westwood storefront.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the situation: spare needed, key lost, or fob acting up.
- We confirm the car by VIN so the fob and procedure match your X5.
- If there is a working key, we check its condition. Many problems turn out to be the battery, a cracked shell, or a worn dash slot.
- We connect to the OBD port and read the CAS system.
- We program the new fob and test the Start button, the remote, and the mechanical backup key.
- You leave with every key tested, and we tell you plainly what we found.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of an X5 key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real answer depends on your car. These are the factors that move the cost.
The biggest one is whether you have a working key. Adding a spare is usually the more economical route. All keys lost involves more programming work. The next factor is the fob itself: a new fob, a refurbished one, or just a new shell and battery for an existing fob are very different jobs. Where the work happens matters too, since a mobile visit to your location differs from bringing the car to us.
The last factor is the CAS firmware. On some late CAS3+ cars, newer firmware can require a downgrade step before a key can be added. That adds time and tooling, which is why we want the VIN before we give you a firm quote.
- Spare key versus all keys lost
- New fob, existing fob repair, or shell-and-battery only
- Mobile visit versus storefront
- CAS firmware version on your car
What we confirm by VIN, and why call us
Here is what we do not guess at. The ID46 chip family is confirmed from European-market E70 key listings, which are 868 MHz. US-market fobs are 315 MHz versions of the same chip family. We still check the exact fob and CAS firmware against your VIN, in person or over the phone, before we order or cut anything. If your car is an exception, we will say so.
Also, electronic steering-lock (ELV) faults can look just like a key failure. If the car will not start and the key seems fine, we check which one it is before replacing a fob you may not need.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We are one company with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd and our own mobile vans, so there is no dispatch middleman. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties and answer the phone 24 hours a day. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a 2007 BMW X5 key if I lost all of them?
Yes. All-keys-lost programming is possible on this model through the OBD port. It is a specialist procedure, not a dealer-only one. We confirm your VIN first.
Do I need my original key to get a spare made?
No. For this year, an original key is not required to add a new fob. Having a working key does make the job simpler and the cost lighter.
My X5 starts but the remote buttons do not work. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. The fob has a rechargeable battery that wears out, and the dash slot still reads the fob, so the car often starts anyway. We check the battery and shell before suggesting a replacement.
Is this a push-button start car?
Yes, in the slot-key sense. You insert the fob into the dash slot and press the Start button. Hands-free Comfort Access was an optional feature, so it depends on how your X5 was equipped.
Does the key have a physical backup key?
Yes. The fob contains a mechanical backup key that opens the door if the battery is flat or the remote fails.
Will the car start with a key that is only cut, not programmed?
No. The ID46 transponder chip must be programmed to your car's CAS module. A cut-only key may open the door but will not start the engine.
Why do you ask for the VIN?
We use it to confirm the right fob for your X5 and to check for the CAS firmware issue that can require an extra step on some late cars. It keeps us from guessing.
