The 2016–2022 7 Series uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the BMW 7 Series key guide.

G-chassis BDC2 car: add-a-key is possible for specialists with a working key (Autel BDC02 licenses; Xhorse's BDC2 bench adapter explicitly cannot do all-keys-lost). True all-keys-lost is dealer territory on these cars — the one advertised aftermarket AKL route (Yanhua ACDP) carries the vendor's own warning that it locks the BDC2 against future dealer keys, so we do not offer it.
What kind of key does a 2016 BMW 7 Series use?
The 2016 7 Series comes with a smart proximity key. You keep the fob in your pocket, the car senses it, and you start the engine with the push-button. There is no ignition cylinder to turn. Inside the fob is an ID49 transponder chip (PCF7953P, also called Hitag Pro), and the fob is paired electronically to the car.
For an owner, that has a few practical consequences. The fob is a small computer, not a cut piece of metal, so a hardware-store copy will not start the car. Replacement means programming a new fob to your specific vehicle. And the whole process depends on the car's body control module, which is the part that decides whether a new key gets accepted.
The fob also holds a mechanical backup key. That blade is there so you can still get into the car if the fob battery dies. It does not replace the programmed fob for driving, so treat it as a way in, not a long-term fix.
Spare key or all keys lost: what is realistic on this car?
This is where the 2016 7 Series differs from many cars we work on, so we will be direct about it.
The car is a G-chassis model with a BDC2 body control module. Adding a key is possible for a specialist when you still have one working key. Duplication on this car requires an original key to be present. The programming goes through the OBD port, and the specialist tools that handle it require the right software licenses on our side.
True all-keys-lost is a different situation. On these cars it is dealer territory, and we do not offer it. There is one aftermarket route advertised for it, but the vendor's own warning says it locks the BDC2 module against future dealer keys. We are not willing to trade a lost-key problem for a car that the dealer can no longer program. If you have lost every key, we would rather tell you that up front than start work that could leave you worse off.
- One working key: adding a spare by OBD is possible, and it is the route we recommend.
- No working keys: plan on the dealer. We will say so on the phone, before anyone drives out.
- Fob that works but is weak: replace the battery first, since this is often the whole problem.
Dead fob battery, 'key not detected' and Digital Key issues
The most common complaint with this setup is a dead coin cell in the fob. The car then shows a 'key not detected' warning even though the key is right there with you. Before assuming the fob has failed, check the battery. It is a much smaller job than replacing a key.
Some 2016 cars are equipped with BMW Digital Key, which lets a phone or card act as the key. Owners sometimes run into enrollment trouble with it. Those problems are tied to the car's equipment and your phone, so we will look at what your particular car has before promising anything.
Whatever you do, make a spare while you still have a working fob. Replacing a lost fob on this car is expensive and often ends up at the dealer, and a spare made now avoids that.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366How we handle a 2016 7 Series key job
We keep the process simple and we say no early if the job is not one we should take.
- Call (213) 577-1366. Tell us the year, the model, whether you have any working key, and whether the car has Digital Key.
- We confirm the setup by VIN, since options and module details on a car this complex are not something we guess at.
- If you have a working key, we add the new fob through the OBD port, either at our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd or by mobile van where you are parked.
- We test every fob: unlock, push-to-start, and that the car recognizes it with the others.
- If no working key exists, we tell you it is dealer work and explain what to bring them.
What affects the price, and what we confirm by VIN
We do not quote numbers in an article, because the cost on this car depends on specifics. The main factors are the fob itself, which on a 7 Series is a more costly part than a basic key; whether you have a working key, which decides whether we can do the job at all; and whether we come to you or you come to the storefront. Time of day and the car's location can also matter.
The dealer route usually costs more and often needs the car towed in. When you have a working key, an OBD add-a-key from us is usually the more economical route. Either way, ask for the full figure before work begins.
One honest caveat: we confirm details by VIN or in person. Fob variants and optional equipment can differ between cars of the same model year, and we would rather check than assume. Also, California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it.
We have been in business since 1987, and you reach one company, not a dispatch middleman. David oversees the work. For other model years, see the 7 Series page, the wider BMW key guide, or all car key services. For a quick question, use our contact page.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a spare key for a 2016 BMW 7 Series?
Yes, if you still have one working key. Duplication on this car requires an original key, and we program the new fob through the OBD port.
What if I lost all my 2016 7 Series keys?
That is dealer work on this car. We do not offer an all-keys-lost service for it because the one aftermarket route carries the vendor's own warning that it locks the BDC2 module against future dealer keys.
My car says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?
Often not. A dead coin cell battery in the fob is a common cause of that warning. Try a new battery before replacing the fob.
What chip does the 2016 BMW 7 Series key use?
The fob uses an ID49 transponder chip (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro), and the key is a push-to-start smart proximity type.
Is there a physical key in the fob?
Yes. The fob holds a mechanical backup key for getting into the car if the fob battery dies. It will not start the car.
Can you fix BMW Digital Key enrollment problems?
Digital Key is only on equipped cars, and enrollment problems depend on the car and the phone. Call us with your VIN and we will say plainly what we can and cannot do.
Do you come to me, or do I come to you?
Both. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour.
