The 2024–2026 5 Series uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the BMW 5 Series key guide.

G60 generation (incl. i5): newest BDC architecture with standard Digital Key. No established aftermarket add-key or all-keys-lost path was found for this generation — we treat key work as dealer-only and say so up front.
What key does the 2024 BMW 5 Series use?
The 2024 5 Series is a smart-proximity car. You carry the fob, the car senses it, and you start the engine with a button. The fob also holds a mechanical backup key, so a dead fob does not have to leave you locked out. That is the one low-tech fallback built into the setup.
This is the G60 generation, which includes the electric i5. It uses BMW's newest body-control architecture, and Digital Key (your phone or a card acting as the key) is standard on this generation. In practice, that means the key system is more locked down than on older BMWs, and the car is built to be serviced through the dealer.
For the owner, the takeaway is simple: do not assume this works like an older BMW where a locksmith could cut and program a new key on the spot. For this generation, we have not found an established aftermarket path for adding or replacing keys, so we say so up front instead of letting you wait for a promise we cannot keep. If you want to compare it with other model years, the 5 Series overview is the place to start.
Spare key or all keys lost: what changes?
The data for this year is clear on one point: duplication needs an original key. If you still have one working fob, you are in a much better position. A spare is a planned job, not an emergency, and you can sort out the details before you are stranded.
All keys lost is the hard case. For this generation we found no established aftermarket all-keys-lost procedure, so we treat it as a dealer matter. That usually means getting proof of ownership together and arranging for the car to reach the dealer, which can involve a tow because the car cannot be driven if it will not start.
- One working fob: copy the situation now, while it is still a spare-key job.
- Zero fobs: expect a dealer-led process and plan on moving the car.
- Phone or card Digital Key still works: that may get you into and driving the car, but it does not replace a physical fob.
Fob says key not detected, or Digital Key will not enroll
Two of the common problems on this car have nothing to do with a lost key. The first is a dead coin cell in the fob. The car then shows a key-not-detected warning even though the fob is in your pocket. Checking the fob battery is the first thing worth doing, and it is far less involved than replacing a key. If that is your situation, call us and we can talk through it.
The second is Digital Key enrollment trouble on cars equipped with it. Setting up a phone or card as a key is tied to the car itself, so when enrollment fails, the cause is often on the vehicle or account side, not a cut-key issue. We will tell you honestly whether that is something we can help with or whether it belongs with the dealer. We do not want to take your call and then send you around in circles.
- Try the mechanical backup key if the car will not unlock normally.
- Replace the fob's coin cell and see whether the warning clears.
- If a Digital Key will not enroll, note any messages the car displays.
- Call us with your VIN so we can say plainly what route applies.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a 2024 5 Series key?
Replacement on this car tends to be on the higher end of car-key work, and the reasons are structural, not arbitrary. We will not quote a number here because it depends on your situation.
The biggest factor is who has to do the programming. Because we treat this key as dealer-only, the dealer's process and parts set a large part of the total. Other factors are whether you have an original key to work from, whether the car has to be towed, and whether you want a spare while you are at it. A fob with a dead battery costs far less than a lost fob, so check that first.
If you are choosing between options, the usually more economical route is almost always to make a spare while you still have a working key, not to wait until the last one is gone.
What we have not verified, and why call us anyway
Here is what is unconfirmed for this year: the exact transponder chip family has not been verified, and the overall data for this car is marked unverified. We will not guess at chip types or programming claims. Where the details matter, we confirm by VIN and in person.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. You get one company, not a dispatch middleman, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. Our line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, every day. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it, including us. For other makes, browse BMW key services or the full car keys section. If you would rather describe your situation, use the contact page.
Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a new key for a 2024 BMW 5 Series?
We have found no established aftermarket path for adding or replacing keys on this generation, so we treat the work as dealer-only. We say that up front and confirm by VIN before suggesting anything else.
I have one working fob. Can I get a spare?
Duplication on this car needs an original key, so having one working fob matters. Programming still goes through the dealer, but you are in a far better position than someone who has lost every key.
What if I lost every key to my 2024 5 Series?
All keys lost is not something we found an established aftermarket route for on this generation. Expect a dealer-led process with proof of ownership, and likely a tow. Call us and we will explain the steps for your VIN.
Why does my car say the key is not detected?
A dead coin cell in the fob is a common cause. Try the fob's mechanical backup key to get in, then replace the battery and see if the warning clears.
My BMW Digital Key will not enroll. Can you fix that?
Enrollment problems on equipped cars are often tied to the vehicle or the account, not the physical key. We will tell you honestly whether it is something we can help with or a dealer matter.
Is there a mechanical key in the 2024 5 Series fob?
Yes. The fob includes a mechanical backup key, which is useful if the fob battery dies.
What is the transponder chip in this key?
That has not been verified for this year, and we will not guess. We confirm chip and programming details by VIN and in person.
