What counts as a high security lock?
A standard house lock is a pin tumbler cylinder built to a price. The tolerances are loose, the pins are soft, and the keyway is common enough that every hardware store and key kiosk stocks blanks for it. That is fine for keeping honest people honest. It is not much of an obstacle for someone who owns a pick set or a bump key.
A high security lock does the same job but changes the parts that attackers rely on. When people ask us for high security lock installation, these are the features they are really buying:
- Security pins (spool, serrated, or mushroom shapes) that catch and false-set when someone tries to pick the lock.
- Tighter manufacturing tolerances and hardened steel inserts that resist drilling, prying, and forced turning.
- A sidebar or second locking element, so the key has to pass more than one set of checks.
- A restricted keyway, with key blanks that are controlled and not sold over the counter.
- Bump-resistant internals that do not respond to a bump key the way a plain pin stack does.
Are high security locks really unpickable?
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Pick-resistant locks are designed to make an attack slower, harder, and less likely to succeed, not impossible. The honest goal is to move your door from the easy target to the one a person walks away from.
It also helps to remember that the cylinder is only one part of the door. A strong lock in a weak frame or a loose strike plate can still lose to a boot. We look at the whole door when we quote high security lock replacement, because spending money on a cylinder while ignoring the frame is the most common mistake we see.
Why do Bell homes and shops ask about high security locks?
Most of Bell's housing was built between the 1920s and the 1950s: small bungalows on compact lots, plus low-rise apartment buildings, with a high share of renters. Hardware in buildings that age has usually been through several owners and tenants. Keys get copied, lent out, and forgotten about. Nobody can say for certain how many copies of an old key are still around.
That is the situation behind most of the calls we get on this service. A tenant moves out and the landlord wants keys that can't be duplicated casually. A homeowner has lost track of who holds a spare. A shop owner wants a door that takes real effort to defeat. Sometimes it is simply that a lock has gotten loose and sloppy after decades, and the owner would rather upgrade than patch it.
Security screen doors and window bars are common on older Bell homes in the denser blocks. They add a useful outer layer, but the main door behind them still depends on its own lock. If the screen door is the only thing you are worried about, that is a different and usually lighter repair. If the main door is the concern, a pick-resistant cylinder is where we start.

Call (213) 577-1366How does a high security lock installation work, step by step?
The process is straightforward, and we explain each stage as we go so nothing about your door is a mystery afterward.
- You call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us what kind of door it is, what lock is on it now, and what worries you: copied keys, picking, bumping, a recent break-in, or a tenant change.
- We look at the door and frame in person. Wood, hollow metal, and aluminum storefront doors each need different hardware, and we check the hinges, the strike plate, and the frame for splits or sagging.
- We recommend a lock based on what we find. That means choosing the keyway type, the level of pick and bump resistance, and whether your existing hardware can take a new cylinder or the whole lockset should change.
- We explain the cost before work begins, including anything the door itself needs, such as a reinforced strike or longer screws into the framing.
- We install and align the lock. In an older door, this is where the care matters, because a bolt that drags or doesn't fully extend defeats the point of a better cylinder.
- We cut the keys, test every one from both sides with the door closed, and walk you through how restricted key copies are ordered so you know how to get more later.
What is the difference between pick-resistant and bump-resistant locks?
They are two different attacks, and good high security locks are built to resist both. Picking uses thin tools to set each pin by feel, one at a time. Security pins and tight tolerances fight that by giving false feedback and binding in misleading ways. Bumping uses a specially cut key that is struck to jolt the pins out of the way. Bump-resistant locks defeat that by changing how the pins or secondary elements move, so the energy of the strike doesn't line everything up.
A third issue is key control, and it is the one most people overlook. With a restricted key system, the blanks are not freely sold, and duplicates usually require an authorization card, ID, or a request through the original dealer. That matters more in a rental or a shop than in a single-owner home, because it limits who can quietly make a copy. It also means a spare is not as casual to get, and we will tell you that up front.
If your main concern is just that your keys are too easy to copy, a restricted keyway may solve more of your problem than extra pick resistance does. If you are mostly worried about someone working on the lock itself, the internal design matters most. Most people want both, and we will explain the tradeoffs rather than upsell you.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of high security lock replacement in Bell?
We don't quote numbers on a web page because the real answer depends on your door. These are the things that move the cost, so you can see why two jobs on the same street can differ:
- How many cylinders you are changing, and whether you want them keyed alike so one key works every door.
- The lock system you choose. A cylinder with security pins is a different tier from one with a sidebar and a restricted, controlled keyway.
- Whether the cylinder swaps into your existing hardware or the full lockset has to be replaced. Swapping only the cylinder is usually the more economical route when the hardware underneath is still sound.
- Door and frame condition: sagging, splits, worn strike plates, or a door that swells in summer heat and no longer lines up.
- Reinforcement, such as a heavier strike plate or long screws into the framing.
- The number of keys or authorization cards you need.
- Commercial requirements, such as a rating, an interior lever or thumbturn for safe exit, or hardware matched to an existing master key system.
- Timing. A planned daytime upgrade differs from a late-night call after a break-in.
What do high security locks look like around Bell: Gage Avenue, Atlantic, Florence, and the river?
Bell is a compact city with one ZIP code, 90201, and its building types sort fairly clearly by area. That shapes what we recommend.
Around Downtown Bell and Gage Avenue, apartment buildings are common. In a building where tenants turn over, a restricted-key cylinder is worth considering at the unit doors, because it keeps a former tenant's spare from being freely copied. Doing a standard lock rekey between tenants is the lighter-cost option, and for many units it is enough. A high security cylinder makes sense when the owner wants real key control, not just a fresh set of keys.
On the Atlantic Avenue corridor and the Florence Avenue corridor, storefronts and small businesses share the street with homes. A shop door gets more daily use and more wear, so the lock and the door closer need to work together. Along the eastern side near Bell Gardens and the riverside blocks along the LA River, we mostly see the older bungalows. There the question is usually the front door behind a security screen: a better deadbolt, a reinforced strike, and a cylinder that doesn't wear out its pins.
West of the river, the Cheli industrial district around Rickenbacker Road is mostly small shops and yards. High security padlocks, hardened shackles, and protected gate hardware matter there as much as door cylinders do.
Climate is a practical detail too. Bell sits inland, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, and heat can swell older wooden doors and frames. A precision lock only works as intended when the bolt lines up cleanly with the strike, so we check alignment in the hot months, not just on the day of install. Salt-air corrosion is not a meaningful factor this far inland, so you are choosing on security and door fit, not marine-grade finishes.
Bell is about 19 miles from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and most Bell work is done by our mobile vans at your door. If you want to talk it over first, see our mobile locksmith service page.

Call (213) 577-1366What about commercial security locks for shops and yards?
Commercial security locks follow the same principles, with more attention to how the door is used. A shop door might be opened dozens of times a day, may need an interior lever for safe exit, and sometimes has to fit into a master key plan with several employees holding keys. A restricted keyway matters even more here, because it limits who can copy a key a former employee once held.
If your issue is a damaged or failing shop door, start with our storefront lock repair page, and see our commercial locksmith overview for the wider picture. For the small industrial properties on Rickenbacker Road, our gate lock repair work covers gates and padlocks. We keep this page focused on the high security cylinders themselves, and we point you to the right service when the real problem is the door, the gate, or the closer.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for high security locks?
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. That is a long time to see how locks actually fail, which is useful when you are deciding what is worth upgrading and what is not.
We are one company with a storefront and mobile vans, not a dispatch service that hands your job to whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. When you call (213) 577-1366, at any hour, you are reaching us, not a call center with a script.
We also talk you out of things. If a standard cylinder and a reinforced strike plate solve your problem, we will say so. If you rent, we suggest talking to your landlord before changing locks, and landlords can see our locksmith for landlords page. If a high security lock is the right answer, we will tell you what it does and what it doesn't.
What should you ask any locksmith about licensing?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), called an LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the license number before work begins, and check it with the state. That is a fair request from any customer, and a company that dodges it is telling you something.
Also ask who will actually do the work, whether the cost is explained before starting, and how restricted keys will be copied later. Those answers matter more with high security locks than with any other kind, because you are paying for control over your keys.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best high security lock for a Bell apartment or bungalow?
It depends on the door and what you are protecting against. For most front doors we look at a deadbolt with a pick-resistant, bump-resistant cylinder and a restricted keyway, installed in a properly reinforced frame. We look at the door first and then recommend, rather than naming one product for everybody.
Can you install high security locks if I rent in Bell?
Technically yes, but check your lease and talk to your landlord first. Many leases require permission before changing locks, and the landlord may need a key. If your landlord approves, we can install and cut the keys. Landlords who want controlled keys across several units can also call us about a restricted system.
Will a high security lock stop a bump key?
A bump-resistant lock is designed so a bump key does not line up the internals the way it would on a standard cylinder. No lock is perfect, and a weak door or frame can still be forced. That is why we check the whole door, not only the cylinder.
Can I get extra keys copied for a restricted key lock?
Usually yes, but not casually. Restricted blanks are controlled, so copies typically require an authorization card, ID, or a request through the original dealer. That is the point of the system. We explain exactly how copies work for your lock before we install it, so there is no surprise later.
Can you upgrade just the cylinder, or do I need a whole new lock?
Often the cylinder alone can be swapped into existing hardware, which is usually the more economical route. If the lockset itself is worn, loose, or mismatched to the door, we will say so and explain why a full replacement would serve you better. Have a look at our lock replacement page for that scenario.
Do hot summers in Bell affect high security locks?
The lock itself is fine, but heat can swell older wooden doors and frames so the bolt no longer lines up with the strike. We check alignment during installation and can adjust hardware if a door shifts. Salt-air corrosion is not a real issue this far inland.
Do you handle high security locks for shops on Atlantic Avenue or Rickenbacker Road?
Yes. We install commercial security cylinders on shop doors and high security padlocks and gate hardware for small industrial properties. We confirm the door type, the exit requirements, and any existing key plan before recommending hardware.
Can you come out at night for a high security lock after a break-in?
Yes. We answer at (213) 577-1366 around the clock, every day of the year. After a break-in, we can secure the door first and then talk through a proper high security upgrade when you have had time to think.
