What do Chevrolet owners in Agua Dulce usually need?

Agua Dulce is almost entirely rural ranchettes and custom single-family homes on multi-acre parcels, most of it built from the 1970s onward. Horse facilities, driveway gates, barns and outbuildings are normal here, and there is effectively no apartment or condo stock. That changes what a car-key problem looks like. Nobody is losing a key in a parking structure. It happens at the far end of a long driveway, beside a barn, at a gate, or parked out near Vasquez Rocks, and the nearest help is not a few blocks away.

Chevrolet trucks and SUVs such as the Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban and Colorado suit this kind of property, and the keys that go with them live in work-jean pockets and get dropped in arenas and on gravel. We do not have a count of who drives what in town, but the situations are easy to picture, and they are the ones we plan for:

Because Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our Westwood base, we treat every call here as a planned trip. We ask the right questions on the phone so the van is loaded for your specific model rather than guessing at the curb.

  • A lost key somewhere on several acres, with no spare cut and no way to start the truck.
  • A worn or broken key: a snapped flip-key hinge, a cracked remote-head shell, or a blade that no longer turns the ignition smoothly.
  • A hardware-store copy that opens the door but will not start the engine, because the vehicle needed a chip the copy does not have.
  • A smart fob with a dead battery and a dash message reading 'no remote detected.'
  • A lockout at a rural home or trailhead where waiting around is not a real option.

How does mobile Chevrolet key service work at your curb or gate?

Mobile service means the work happens where the Chevrolet is parked, not at a counter. For a vehicle stuck at the end of a gated drive, that matters, because the alternative is arranging a tow. Here is how a typical call goes.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Tell us the year, model and trim, what kind of key you have (plain metal key, remote-head, flip key, or push-button start fob), and how many working keys you still have.
  2. We place your Chevrolet in its key era using the year and model. Where catalogs disagree, we ask for the VIN and confirm from it instead of guessing.
  3. We explain what the job involves, what drives the cost, and whether anything about your vehicle might push it toward a dealer. You hear this before work starts.
  4. A mobile van comes to you: a driveway off Agua Dulce Canyon Road, a gate, a barn lot, a roadside pull-out. No tow is needed.
  5. We confirm you are the owner or authorized to have the key made, which means matching ID to the vehicle registration. Any honest locksmith will ask.
  6. We cut the key by code or from the lock, then program it where the vehicle requires programming. Older Passlock-era Chevrolets do not need any.
  7. We test everything before we leave: the door, the ignition, the remote buttons and the spare. Then we hand you the keys.

Which Chevrolet key era is yours?

Chevrolet did not use one key system. It used four, and the boundaries shift by model, so the year alone is sometimes not enough. In plain terms:

  • Passlock era, through the mid-2000s: GMT800 Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban (2000-2006), Impala (2000-2005), Malibu (2000-2003), first-generation Equinox (2005-2006) and first-generation Colorado (2004-2012). There is no chip in the key. The security sensor sits in the ignition lock cylinder, so a correctly cut key starts the vehicle without programming.
  • PK3+ 'circle-plus' era: an ID46 (Philips/NXP Hitag2) transponder chip in the key. It arrived at different times by model: Malibu 2004, Impala 2006, GMT900 trucks and SUVs 2007, Equinox 2007.
  • Global A era, roughly 2010 to 2015 onward: Hitag2 Extended '46E' chips in remote-head keys, flip keys and the first proximity fobs. Examples include Cruze 2011, Malibu 2013, Silverado 2014, Tahoe and Suburban 2015, and Colorado 2015.
  • Global B era, 2021 on: NXP ID49 (Hitag Pro/AES) smart fobs on the redesigned Tahoe and Suburban (2021), Colorado (2023) and Traverse (2024).
  • Newest redesigns, 2025 and later: one catalog lists the redesigned Equinox with Megamos AES ID88 keys. We treat that as unconfirmed, because catalogs disagree.

Why the era matters more than the badge on the tailgate

Two Chevrolets that look alike in a driveway can need completely different work. One needs only a cut key. Another needs a chip programmed through the diagnostic port. A third needs a server-validated procedure. Several 2021 to 2024 changeover years are genuinely disputed between catalogs, so for vehicles near those boundaries we confirm by VIN or in person before promising a method. You can also read our broader Chevrolet key overview or the car key hub for other makes.

What if you have lost every Chevrolet key?

All keys lost is the situation that worries people most, and the honest answer is that it depends on the era.

Passlock-era Chevrolets are the easy case. Keys are cut by code, and no key programming is needed. The well-known 30-minute relearn (three 10-minute cycles) only applies after an ignition cylinder or module has been replaced.

PK3+ circle-plus vehicles support that same 30-minute onboard relearn for all keys lost without special tools. Programming through the OBD port with professional equipment is much faster, so that is usually the practical route.

Global A vehicles from roughly 2010 to 2020 are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools, and aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage for them is mature.

The 2021 and later Global B vehicles are where things tighten. Key programming increasingly gets validated through GM's servers (ACDelco SPS2), and all keys lost may require NASTF VSP-credentialed tooling or dealer service, depending on the tool. We confirm current tool coverage for each job rather than assume.

On 2025 and newer redesigns with Megamos AES (ID88) systems, aftermarket support is immature. Those may be dealer-only or specialist-only for now, and if yours is one of them we will tell you plainly instead of making a trip that cannot finish the job. If this is your situation, our lost car key replacement page for Agua Dulce covers the process in general terms.

What commonly goes wrong with Chevrolet keys?

Not every 'bad key' is a bad key. These are the patterns that show up with Chevrolets:

  • Failed Passlock sensors on 2000s models. The security light stays on and the engine starts then stalls, even with a perfectly good key. A new key will not fix that, so we diagnose before cutting anything.
  • Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage trucks and sedans. The key sticks or stops turning, and sometimes the lock needs attention rather than the key.
  • Hardware-store copies cut for transponder-era cars without a chip. They open the doors but will not start the engine.
  • Broken flip-key hinges and cracked remote-head or fob shells.
  • Dead smart-fob batteries. The dash says 'no remote detected,' yet the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. Often this is a battery issue, not a replacement. See our key fob replacement page for fob-specific details.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently, working one day and not the next.

What affects the cost of a Chevrolet key in Agua Dulce?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your vehicle and your situation. These are the factors that actually move the cost:

  • The key era. A Passlock-era cut key is a very different job from a Global B smart fob.
  • The key type: plain metal key, remote-head, flip key, or proximity fob.
  • How many working keys you have. Making a copy from a working key is generally simpler than all keys lost.
  • Whether programming can be done with aftermarket tools, or needs server validation, specialist tooling or the dealer.
  • Whether the ignition cylinder, wafers or a Passlock sensor also need work.
  • Distance and timing. Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our base, so travel is part of the quote, and the hour you call can matter as well.
  • Parts quality. Low-quality chips and shells are where intermittent failures come from, and a lighter-cost part is not always the more economical choice.

Should you go to the dealer or call a locksmith?

Both are legitimate, and the right answer depends on the car. For most Passlock, PK3+ and Global A Chevrolets, a mobile locksmith is usually the more economical route, mostly because you skip the tow and the trip, and the vehicle never leaves your property.

For the newest vehicles, the dealer can be the correct call. If your Chevrolet is a 2021 or later Global B model whose programming is validated through GM's servers, or a 2025 or newer redesign with immature aftermarket support, we may not be able to complete the job, and we will say so. Dealer service departments also have their own scheduling, and you would need to get the vehicle there.

If you are unsure, call us anyway. A short conversation about your year, model and VIN is enough for us to tell you which route makes sense, even when that route is not us.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans that cover 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach our own company, not a dispatch middleman who sells the job to whoever answers fastest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

One practical tip for any locksmith you hire: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith, including us, for that number before work begins. If a company hesitates, that tells you something. If you just want the overview of what we do in town, visit our Agua Dulce locksmith page.

Chevrolet key service across Agua Dulce and ZIP 91390

Agua Dulce is unincorporated Los Angeles County, ZIP 91390, and it spreads across the Agua Dulce Canyon Road town center, the Sierra Highway corridor, the Darling Road area, Sleepy Valley, the area near Vasquez Rocks, and the Mint Canyon area to the southwest toward Canyon Country. Getting a Chevrolet key made in a place this spread out is mostly a question of finding the car and getting there.

Local scenarios shape the calls. A new owner of a horse property along Sierra Highway may want rekeying for the house and new keys for the vehicles that came with it. A ranchette off Agua Dulce Canyon Road may have a driveway gate with its own lock as well as a truck whose only key is gone. A lockout at a custom home near Vasquez Rocks is a different animal than one in a city lot, because there is no neighbor to borrow a spare from. And hangar and outbuilding lock work comes up around Agua Dulce Airpark. If you are locked out rather than keyless, our car lockout service is the quicker place to start.

The climate adds its own wear. At about 2,500 feet, Agua Dulce has hot, dry summers, cold winter nights and frequent wind. Temperature swings shift door frames seasonally, and dust works into exterior gate locks and padlocks. A key ring carrying a gate key, a padlock key and a Chevrolet fob is carrying a lot of grit, so cleaning and checking worn keys before they fail is worth doing. Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Chevrolet key in Agua Dulce without towing the truck?

In most cases, yes. Our vans come to the vehicle, whether it sits in a driveway, at a gate or by the roadside. The exceptions are newer vehicles that require dealer-only or server-validated programming, and we tell you early if yours is one of them.

Does every Chevrolet key need programming?

No. Passlock-era Chevrolets, such as the 2000 to 2006 Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban, have no chip in the key. The security sensor is in the ignition cylinder, so a correctly cut key starts the vehicle. Later transponder and smart-fob models do need programming.

I lost all my keys on a 2000s Silverado. What happens?

If it is a Passlock-era truck, we can cut a key by code and it should start without programming. If it is a PK3+ model, the key needs a chip programmed, either by the slower onboard relearn or faster professional OBD equipment. We confirm the era by year and VIN first.

My hardware-store copy opens the door but will not start the car. Why?

That usually means your Chevrolet is a transponder-era vehicle and the copy has no chip. The blade matches the lock, but the car never receives the code it expects. The fix is a properly chipped key programmed to the vehicle, not another copy of the same type.

My Tahoe says 'no remote detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. On smart-fob Chevrolets this message commonly means a dead battery, and the hidden emergency blade will still open the door. Try a fresh battery first. If the fob still fails, it may be damaged or need reprogramming, and we can look at it.

Can you handle a 2025 Equinox key?

We will not promise it. One catalog lists Megamos AES ID88 keys on 2025 and newer redesigns, but we treat that as unconfirmed since catalogs disagree, and aftermarket support is immature. We confirm by VIN, and if it is dealer-only we say so rather than send a van.

How much will a Chevrolet key cost?

It depends on the key era, the key type, how many keys you have left, whether the vehicle needs special tools or dealer validation, and how far we travel. Call (213) 577-1366 with your year, model and VIN, and we will walk you through the quote.

What do I need to show before you make a key?

Expect to show ID and proof that the vehicle is yours or that you are authorized, usually through the registration. Any reputable locksmith asks for this, because a key to a vehicle is a key to someone's property.

Is the locksmith you send required to hold a license?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for that license number before work starts. That includes us, and it is a reasonable thing to expect from anyone who comes to your property.
